you know, I don't even think these games are that impressive. the competition is just that bad.

Mario 1 at least beat Zelda 1, but you can't even say how strong that is since it beat Contra, Metroid 1 and Tetris. Mario 3 beat powerhouses like SF2 and Sonic 1. Mario World beat low-tier FF titles.

these old games would get rocked by modern games. too bad we'll never get to see it.

Yeah, I was talking up FF2/4 quite big, but two rounds of evidence in our second BGE and our third four-way bracket doesn't compare to three years of evidence in our fourth CB and sixth one-on-one bracket. We had also never seen FF2/4, so -- while I was feeling real good about FF2/4 -- I don't think it compares; Mario/Samus was huge AND a match we had been anticipating for at least a year. How we were all fighting over WoW is more comparable to Mario/Samus than this match, though I'll be eating humble pie here for awhile.

If the next round goes SMW > LoZ, and FFVII > LttP/SM64, we could very well see FFVII and LttP/SMW in the finals, along with two other Nintendo games. Perfect set up for FFVII to win it all.

I disagree with that! There's only a handful of games released post 2000 that have legitimate top ten arguments...I think this is a site that loves its older games. But it's definitely a shame we'll never get to see it, that was one of the most interesting parts of having another games contest and we got stuck with division by era again.

Huh? It loves older Marios and Zeldas, maybe. I think this contest made it pretty clear they don't care for most older games -- older being NES and SNES. I mean, the top Mario game might not even be 2D!

Whenever I think of older games, I tend to think NES and SNES. It's true that the PS1/N64 era is starting to become more like the 'NES' to younger people, but I dunno. I usually split 'newer' and 'older' with 2D and 3D.

Well, we'll get a read on that, anyway, since Mario 64 and LttP are going to be up against each other.

I guess there's five big N64/PSX games and RBY, but that seems more stacked towards the "middle" than towards newer games. I'd never take LttP/Mario 3/Mario World/CT to lose to anything from the most recent generation, and I like their chances against Melee or FFX, too.

Zelda 1 and SMB will be so far behind 3/World it won't even be funny.

The more interesting battle will be to see if 3 can beat World when you replace a SNES game and Sonic with 2 other NES games.

Man, what a day to miss half of the poll! I really wasn't expecting FFIV to fail so hilariously, but I'm really glad it did. The Mario games are some of the best in the industry (Super Mario Sunshine don exits), and they deserve to make Round 4, or maybe 5 (or 6!). Can anyone explain what happened here, since I couldn't see it with my own eyes and the updater doesn't explain it all?

this match is actually pretty boring. it's just one massive stall with Mario 3 a few hundred votes ahead.

Basically the match started off with SMB3 seemingly gonna win it easily, but by about 3 AM it started to get cut over and over again by SMW, and was only a 150 vote lead for SMB3 (after being up about 400). SMB3 gained back up to 620 before the ASV, and the ASV has cut almost 250 in SMWs favor.

Let's see if SMB3 can hold on- my guess is yes, unless people decide to rally for SMW or something. But I'd guess that would be one hard rally to pull off.

As for Zelda/Mario/Mario/Mario and FF/Sonic/Mario/Mario, the main differences are that Zelda 1 would 60-40 FFIV or worse, and that there'll be 3 Mario games next round instead of 2. SMB3 and SMW are getting some LFF on each other; it's just covered up by our being extremely generous to FFIV last round and giving it all of FF1's votes, and saying that MM3 wasn't hurting SMW at all. Actually, at this point I can almost buy FFIV rSFFing FF1, but we'll need more evidence to really think that.

Chrono Trigger has a good chance in 2 days; FFVII/CT LFF isn't very heavy- perhaps in part because the fanbase is very broad, kind of like SMB3 and SMW here. It's the games with narrow or niche fanbases that have problems with LFF- CT and FFVII aren't universal like the Mario games today, but they are the 2 biggest RPGs on an RPG-centric site, from different generations, with very different trends. Games with tons of overlap almost always have very similar trends.

Further, Crono/Vincent last year gives us a very good read on the LFF between them- Vincent got less than 2% lower on Samus when Crono was introduced into the poll. Goldeneye could easily hurt SM64 by that much or more- I'd consider it a pretty fair match for CT/SM64, as far as the LFF goes. The stronger game 1v1 should win.

Also, Goldeneye (and SMRPG) are being underrated here. It got 33% on FFVII last round while suffering triple LFF- it's likely worth around 40% on FFVII 1v1, which doesn't put it too far off from SM64 and CT. Further validation of GE's strength comes from its easy victory over Mario Kart (we can assume that SMRPG > MK64, and it seems pretty likely that GE didn't just SFF SMRPG but is actually stronger by a fair amount) which put up 30% on FFVII while being LFFed by Starfox 64.

It could still get SFFed, but my feeling on that has changed since last round- I think it'll hold up fairly well.
