Shorthand, do you speak it?!

It seems that quite a few of us (meaning the analysis crew members and the users here, including me) are voting for Super Mario Galaxy, which means that SMG is being mopped up by the casuals. The way things are going, I can't believe that Super Mario Galaxy has been in the top 30 in every "Best Game Ever" list published after its release. What the hell is this??? (and yes, I apologize if my references to other sites' critical reception are getting annoying, but I just had to mention it).

Tomorrow's match will hopefully be less disgusting. It seems clear cut that MGS4 will take the win, probably by 5% over 2nd place Fallout 3. I don't really care about the Halo 3/Portal match that goes on below, but I'll just say that Halo 3 wins because it's more mainstream and managed 1,000 more votes than Portal did in their respective matches.

Prediction: Metal Gear Solid 4 > Fallout 3
Metal Gear Solid 4 - 39%, Portal - 15%, Fallout 3 - 30%, Halo 3 - 16% (yes I'm kind of lazy about the percentages)
Bracket: Metal Gear Solid 4 > Fallout 3
Favorites: Metal Gear Solid 4 > Fallout 3
Favorites Bracket: Metal Gear Solid 4 > Fallout 3

CoD will probably get some cuts in before Brawl's BSV jump.

Smash should not be able to SFF anything. It's good, but way overrated on this site.

Regardless, both SSBB and SSBM would be in my top 50 games. SSBM was my first video game and so holds a special place in my heart (even though I won't vote for it at all in this tourney).

That's true tranny -- look what happened to us when we judged SM64 off of LoZ:OoT. That said, this match says to me what R1 said to...pretty much everyone else about SMG: it just can't keep up like that.

This is a killer performance for SSBB though -- I thought it was going to be practically impossible for SSBB/SMG to beat CoD4, and SSBB is doing it by 15+% right now. What happened to the games from 2007? What happened to SSBB in the GotY-polls, too? This should have never ever struggled with a PS3-exclusive.

SMB dies in the face of several games people care about. I have trouble seeing the only two Wii games people care about not split, and RBY would give them very tough matches anyway, so it takes first. Brawl vs. TP is harder...so when in doubt, go ZELDA

Huh.....let's go with modern LFF and thus RBY > SMB. I might SMB might be stronger than Brawl indirectly, but picking it directly over Brawl 1v1 feels very wrong. Maybe that's a sign that SMB isn't stronger than Brawl indirectly, and is somewhat below the other Mario games.

I think it's really easy to get bogged down in the numbers of all the recent games.

take a step back. throw out GOTY polls and just ask yourself: what wins, Brawl or COD4? even with Galaxy here I had no problem taking Brawl for first. it's outdoing my expectations, but I can't say it's surprising. if you never saw a GOTY poll, would you expect anything out of COD4?

the same goes for 2008 GOTY. we don't need a poll to validate the most anticipated game of this generation. (yeah, I'd put this well above Twilight Princess.) the other big game of the last few years has been MGS4. I'm fine with both MGS4 and Brawl being pretty strong. even if one ends up strong and the other weak, though, I'd be okay with that. I don't need to tie the two at the hip based on those polls.

the outlier there, of course is Fallout 3, but given that this is an RPG site and Fallout 3 is the biggest RPG since KH2 at the least and possibly FFX, I'm also okay with that being strong. nothing else was even close to those three games. Fallout 3 crushed the GTA4 that you're seeing today.

so in conclusion, this result does not surprise me. I mean, it's Brawl and a FPS. there's a limit to how high I'm willing to go. I always thought the people calling for COD4 to compete with or beat Fallout 3 were nuts.

I agree GameFAQs is not a site where games like Call of Duty 4 can thrive in. I bet next round Brawl is going to win the division by a lot more than it won the GotY. Also on the record I'd take Half-Life 2 over Call of Duty 4 in a close match.

I did argue once upon a time that 2008 would be a year filled with powerhouses, but I changed my mind on that theory when SSBB couldn't get away from MGS4 one-on-one; I thought that was a sign of weakness from our GotY, and if it was stronger than the rest of 2008's games then it wasn't going to be particularly kind to any of them.

FO3 also looks like it needed to distance itself more from Halo 3 than it did, considering how SMG/CoD4 and the other Halos have done. It'll still advance this round and will probably hit the numbers it needs to hit, plus I'll go easy on it since it was a battle between four huge 360-hits (FO3 and L4D being multi-platform, too, but still) and I would hope Halo 3 could hold its own in that kind of set-up...I would feel better about it tomorrow though if FO3 could have done some more distancing.
