No, it doesn't. Maybe back in the day with Tina Armstrong, but with so many voters, they all can't be stupid enough to just vote on somebody based off a picture. If I saw the name "Solid Snake" next to a Solid **** pic, I'd still vote Solid Snake. And I hardly think there are enough kiddies who only know Snake by sight to make a difference.

Pic factor is not based on the quality of the pic, but on the ability to draw your attention. Solid **** is unable to draw its fans' attention due to being so unrecognizable. Same with Zero Suit Samus.

There are exceptions, of course, but the most common over-performances we've seen come from people against Solid Snake and he's not had a sprite-picture since 2007. Otherwise, the overwhelming majority of matches only have the pics matter minimally. Even if a "bad" pic is used, it doesn't really truly matter contest-wise unless it largely favors one option over the rest (Solid > Sora, 2005) or makes an option more obscure to much of its fanbase (Solid ****).

I'm not a big believer in the pic factor, but getting all defensive and saying we whine for the sake of whining is a bit uncalled for. There's absolutely nothing wrong with us not liking the pic, and it doesn't stop you from submitting them in the first place. I don't like pics that are all about "Hey, isn't the guy who made this pic creative!" instead of ones that actually emphasize the games.

Just don't get so offended when people say your pic sucks. You can make and submit whatever you want, but you shouldn't be surprised if a lot of people don't think it's good, especially when it's the only one chosen.

I thought my Galaxy pic was great, but most people here probably don't! Just how it is.

HM's Galaxy pic is pretty bad, I must say. >_>

I think Zen's main issue here is that he posts every pic he makes beforehand, but all of the complaints he gets always come after it gets accepted. Wouldn't kill you guys to take 5 seconds to comment on them.

I don't care if people think it's good or not, but it pisses me off when people say that it obscures the game or something. I could care less if people don't like my pics, because if I think they kick ass and KP thinks they kick ass them I'm fine with them being on the front page under my name.

Honestly, no pics have seriously obscured a character or game other than the swimming pool one, which was one of the first pics ever submitted for Round 3.

Match XLVII: Super Smash Bros. Brawl vs. Grand Theft Auto IV vs. Call of Duty 4 vs. Super Mario Galaxy

Last Round:

Super Smash Bros. Brawl – 47.05%
Grand Theft Auto IV – 26.20%
Street Fighter IV – 13.38%
Persona 4 – 13.37%

Call of Duty 4 – 35.79%
Super Mario Galaxy – 28.47%
Pokemon DP – 23.40%
Team Fortress 2 – 12.34%

Analysis

We’re back to the final division and almost the end of the round. Here we’ll get our first look at the Wii hierarchy though after last round I think we can guess the order for those two games. The threat of having both Nintendo games place is now over making the division final a repeat of the 2008 GotY with an added guest.

Super Mario Galaxy pretty much flopped that match even removing Halo 3 from the GotY Galaxy shouldn’t have even lost yet alone be closer to Pokemon DP than Call of Duty 4. You could always blame Pokemon for the loss, but this round Galaxy has bigger problems. I always thought Galaxy was weaker than Brawl, but with Call of Duty 4 having strength it could realistically come in fourth in this match. Especially if Galaxy decides to get SFF in this match which is very possible.

For once the GotY polls were accurate in predicting Grand Theft Auto IV’s performance. After Call of Duty 4’s performance last round I no longer think Grand Theft Auto IV has a chance at placing though it should still be able to take third over a crushed Galaxy and put up a good performance against Call of Duty 4. The only reliable data we have between 2007 and 2008 games was the Fallout 3/Halo 3 match, but since when have the GotY polls been accurate?

To be truthful I never expected much from Call of Duty 4 and largely ignored it. Well here it is looking good after round 1 and is ready to take advantage of LFF and steal first as well. What I’ve been wondering is whether or not Galaxy just died since 2007 or if Call of Duty 4 has a chance at winning this division. Call of Duty 4 should be considered the favourite here, but something is stopping me from pulling that trigger completely.

Brawl did well last round getting the highest percent of the division and doing better than most expected, of course most of that was at Street Fighter IV’s expense. After last round’s performance I see Brawl dominating Galaxy making the LFF hit a bit smaller. Brawl may be the underdog against Call of Duty 4, but if things go as plan it can take first.

This match is much more interesting than the last match of the round since the placing of the two winners is in doubt. If Call of Duty 4 can win with a high enough percent we could have a new favourite for the division. I’m still a little doubtful of its strength though, but that could change with this match.

Kinda strange how TP's going to get almost exactly what it got on HL2 again this round and RE4's going to get almost exactly what it got on KHII again this round. About as straightforward as it gets here.

He posts them in that other topic, which not everyone frequents. And given how he reacts to people calling out his pics, I don't think many would want to even bother beforehand. But who cares? People can comment all they want when the pics go up -- we've done this forever. Just because it was a board 8 dude who made it doesn't mean you have to go any easier on it.

The double-dose of Mario in the Brawl/Galaxy pic is funny. A lot funnier than the SMB3/SMW double-dose, I guess cause that's box arts.

And FFIV'x box art is good, it's the colors that are the problem and made it blend it. Saying the box art is bad is silly. Shouldn't affect the match much though hopefully.

Kp's 3rd and 4th pics are easily his best, don't know about the cigarette pack though. That might be a problem.

Although now I'm feenin' for a cigarette myself, blargh. Haven't had one for months. You happy now kp? I might die because of you!

The few times people have posted pics here, 2 people at most have commented them.

I'm just not sure what the thought process is here. Do you ignore the pics entirely? Do you click no them, think "Oh, that could never get accepted" and not bother to comment? If you have issued with a pic, post them. If everyone told me not to submit something, I wouldn't.

And the pics being posted in the other topic is hardly an excuse. That topic is there for a reason. If you can't take 5 minutes of your time to comment on anything you don't like...sorry, but I have no sympathy for you. I'll make sure to post my pics in here from now on (for all that'll do), but that's just laziness.

Brawl: I don't think it's Mario or Snake that will be drawing the focus here: It's got to be the box. The box is in almost every game in one form or another and, while it doesn't stick in our minds like our heroes here, it does stay in our subconscious and will hopefully spring up when the users come to vote. Hail the box!

Grand Theft Auto IV: More reinforcement that Bacon doesn't give a crap about his own rules! I don't care that my in-game pic was passed on, but I find it weird that Bacon was BEGGING for them a while back, and now when he has one, he goes for official art instead. Yeah, basic Niko over basic city shot. Boring. Not like the game was much fun anyway.

Call of Duty 4: Oooo, this was my bad. Nobody else was submitting one so I did it as a sort of "there now it's out of the way." Oh well, I can't say I care much for CoD, but I know KP does, so sorry to him! Don't care enough about anybody else reading this to apologize, though.

Super Mario Galaxy: Another round, another lack of Furry Mario. Think about it: There are 20,000 species of bee in the world. If Galaxy got the bee vote, it'd have the entire contest in the bag. But in this picture, Mario is running away from some kind of insect-type dude. Way to completely pass on a potentially powerful boost there, Mario. Now the bees are going to vote for the box.

Dammit, I post the pic beforehand and get positive reviews on it, then it gets accepted and everyone goes nuts.

I even made it just the box arts with an artsy background! I barely did anything to the covers! There's no problem with it. The only people that whine about pics are you guys because you like to whine. No casual voter is going to come on and pick apart the pic. Hell, they probably don't even look at it for long.

I'll admit something like the swimming pool pic is kinda pushing it, and maybe the pencil pic (even though the characters were nice and clear there), but honestly, when it comes down to it, the pics maybe effect two or three votes at the most, and Bacon wouldn't let us make our own pics if they were a big deal, and he wouldn't accept the artsy ones if they didn't portray the game properly or give an advantage/disadvantage to one of them.

Whoa whoa WHOA, I wasn't complaining at all. Sorry if I came off that way. Sheesh.

A bandanna would also work, though the box is the way to go.

I usually don't say much about pics in the other topic because the pic-factor is relatively small and there are a lot of pics to comment on. I generally look at all of them, but only a few exceptionally stand out (good or bad) and I don't want to tackle predicting how potential pictures will affect a match any more than I have to. Once one is official, it's much more of a topic of discussion about how it is with us.

This was made under my personal philosophy that "If there are four pics to a match, there should be a joke one, because it won't make as big of a deal." But now that there's only one, I think I'm gonna back off on the joke pics for Round 3... But I did submit that because nobody commented. I don't think it'll get picked because it really is an obvious joke, but whatever.

I'll retool it for Round 4. Make the games bigger.
