Impressive performance for FF8 here. Almost avoiding the doubling on OoT despite the bad game baggage dragging it down.

Definitely feeling good about a comfortable second place next round.

PREDICTION: R/B/Y does worse against OoT next round than FF8 does today, forever silencing this top 10 nonsense.

Chrono Trigger vs. Melee is a match I've both wanted to see and been terrified of for a few years. Melee could seriously come back from like 6000 down with the ASV in 1v1.

Newer games will crash and burn against older ones. Maybe in a few years CoD4 would perform better, but right now I don't see it standing up against Pokemon or any top 20 game for that matter.

Yikes, if Ocarina destroys the ASV (like it should if it's getting nearly 50% of the DSV), StarCraft is going to look like a joke game. Gimme FFIX over StarCraft in a fair match; that would have been quite the first round upset.

This is helping us see the extent that Starcraft was beefed up in 2004, and it's crazy. Had it gone up against something like Metroid Prime in an unhyped 8/9 match, it would have probably gone down easily.

Starcraft probably had the biggest jump in strength between Wind Waker and SSBM, 4 days later. I maintain that if it had beaten SSBM and faced FFVII 2 days later, it would have finished #3 in the x-stats.

Realistically, my only hope for anything exciting in this contest lies in RE4 (and perhaps ToS upsetting later this round) at this point. What was the largest comeback in this contest so far? 500 votes?

I could see SM64 ripping FF7 a new one potentially. They'll still all completely fold to OoT, but they could theoretically be up there indirectly.

They aren't but with 5 year old stats anything could happen.

During CT/SM64 I thought maybe SM64 > FFVII would be a good thing. But....no, 2 bad results do not make a good result. I don't want anything but CT or Starcraft to upset FFVII/OOT.

Ocarina isn't getting upset at this point. All the big game stuff that have wowed us are either still a dozen notches below it or pure Nintendo (meaning the SFF hammer will get laid down). If Goldeneye wasn't there, I'd consider Mario 64 > FFVII to be extremely plausible.

Heh...remember when the argument at the beginning of the contest was "Even if OoT is stronger, it still splits way worse with another Zelda game than FF7 will with another FF game."

Granted, we still haven't seen OoT perform with another Zelda game in the poll, but that argument reversing itself would be wild.

So far Super Mario 64 is my star of round 2, and Super Mario Kart is the disappointment.

I'm not sure the Mario games don't fall back down to earth next round. 4-ways are strange; if SMW went from 55% on FF1 to 59% on FF1 + FF4, and SM64 went from 66% to 73% on SOTN, why can't they go the other way next round? Who knows.

How in the world is Super Mario Kart the disappoint of the round so far? It went from being even with Super Metroid to...being even with Super Metroid, and would have beaten it if not for the usual "board favorite pulling a miracle comeback" things we get so often.

Also, if OOT is stronger than FFVII now, I think it's basically entirely FFVII dropping from 2004 and not OOT rising. Those 2 games are no longer the cornerstones of this site, and FFVII has had a string of mediocre performances with no performances that wowed me since 2006. A mediocre performance does not prove anything, but a long string of them suggests something. That is to say, champions almost always manage to exceed expectations. Think of what Cloud did in 2003 and Link's response in 2004.

Gimme FFIX over StarCraft in a fair match; that would have been quite the first round upset.

StarCraft is well below what FFIX got against OoT last round (with Chrono Cross there, no less) and dropping. I said in my write-up for this match that I'd take FFIX > StarCraft, and this performance only confirms that for me.

If Goldeneye wasn't there, I'd consider Mario 64 > FFVII to be extremely plausible.

For the record, OoT made a big jump from the morning vote to the DSV and then a slightly bigger jump to the ASV. Seems to be the same thing happening here. That match was on a Sunday though.

Really, picking any major disappointment outside of FF1/MM3 feels wrong to me. Both of those games got completely buried. At least other games that have underperformed looked good compared to some member of their competition, but both of those games just sucked it up completely.
