FFX is looking pretty good if VIII dies early and even then Melee might die to OoT.

If RBY advances next round, FFX/RBY/OoT/SSBM will be interesting to see.

Nice gain by Starcraft to push the lead over 100 as the power hour closes. Going by last round, we'll probably see another 2 hours of this, and then FFVIII will go berserk. Unlike last round, it's only got 3 hours from 3 AM until morning, however- I wonder what that will do to the trends.

If FF8 advances, I've gotta favor it advancing in R3 too. If Starcraft advances, give me MGS. Either way, it's a shame this format allows FF8 to possibly lose to SC after blowing it out last round.

Two random thoughts:

1) Looking at how FF1+2/4 couldn't match what FF1 got on SMW and how we may see the same thing today with FF8+9 on Starcraft, I wonder if people voting out of FF-respect just don't vote if they see two FF-games they have to pick between. Just an odd thought.

2) It could be interesting to see how FFX and KH react to each other around MGS2; They could have a similar split, MGS2 was beaten by FFX similarly to how Starcraft was beaten by FF8, and MGS is a bigger name than Starcraft around here.

The only explanation I've come up with for the FF1/FF4 thing is that having over 20,000 less votes between the rounds hurt Team FF in comparison to SMW. Otherwise it just makes little to no sense.

Good thing Bacon's all about legitimacy with this Games Contest so we can see stuff like this happen!

And FFX/KH does worry me a bit. I don't think they'll split quite as bad though.

If I took Diablo instead of Ridley I would have won a prize.

I hate to be that guy, but I would have had a perfect bracket if I made that same pick. Instead, I'm not even on the leaderboard...!

Here's a wild theory for why we did so poorly with in votals the very tail end of round 1 and the first half of this round: final exams at universities.

Also, the votals for this match have come back down to earth a bit. We're still only about 250 votes ahead of yesterday's poll, about the same as we were after 5 minutes. That would still put us on track for 130,000 though, which is very good for this contest.

Although the fact that FFVIII and FFIX are getting killed by LFF so hard here, despite what we saw last round, makes me a bit more confident (as much as you can be after having seen the last few matches) that FFIV has a good shot to do something in its match.

I'm not so sure that FFVIII will rise as much as last round. It could be a case of the obvious winner (to people who don't remember Starcraft 2004, it was obvious I guess) doing badly early. Whether or not that's the case, it feels a bit like Crono/Vincent- like the increase was so out of this world that it's hard to believe it would happen again, even between the same games. And of course it doesn't get many hours of late night/early morning vote to work with this time.

Yeah, it certainly can't hurt. I think we might be forgetting that FFVIII wasn't even at full strength last round; it had to deal with Xenogears, and it still put a mighty hurt on Starcraft. Now we replace Xenogears with a (admittedly stronger) game that shares the same name, and Starcraft is making a huge jump. These series splits are serious business, and I still think FFIV has a great chance.

The result is the same, but the trends can be different. We don't know that FFVIII wouldn't have started higher in the power hour last round had it been a weekday.

Yes, we do. FFVIII's board vote and Power Hour will always be bad, no matter what day of the week it is. The first hour of the match is usually the same no matter what day of the week it is.

FFVIII is going to go up, no question. There is a question about how much it will go up, though.

Basically, Starcraft is in the same position as Crono was in last year. Going by previous trends, victory is impossible. I think FFVIII is a very big favorite, but it's not 100% over yet.

Time | R/B/Y | LOZ: MM | MGS | G/S | Demographic
EBV | 28.93% | 22.40% | 30.48% | 18.20% | (0:00-0:05)
PHV | 28.90% | 21.45% | 30.88% | 18.78% | (0:00-1:00)
FNV | 26.47% | 20.02% | 34.97% | 18.53% | (1:00-6:00)
BSV | 23.26% | 20.76% | 35.63% | 20.34% | (6:00-9:00)
DSV | 25.90% | 22.39% | 31.81% | 19.90% | (9:00-14:30)
ASV | 26.62% | 22.26% | 33.01% | 18.11% | (14:30-22:00)
SNV | 26.31% | 21.05% | 35.08% | 17.56% | (22:00-24:00)

MGS has a bad board vote and Power Hour, but an awesome night vote and early morning vote. It went down quite a bit with the late morning and early afternoon, it held up pretty well during the afternoon. Weird trends for RBY here, strong Power Hour and decent night vote, but that early morning timeframe really killed it. No serious move all day. Majora's Mask did its best work from mid-morning and on. G/S's best time was the early morning, for whatever the reason.

Yesterday's stats:

Metal Gear Solid – 50.00%
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow – 44.15%
Majora’s Mask – 39.38%
Pokemon Gold/Silver – 36.29%

Upper Half Stats

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow (Round 1) – 50.00%
Metal Gear Solid – 46.06%
Pokemon Gold/Silver (Round 1) – 42.99%
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow (Round 2) – 40.67%
Majora’s Mask – 36.28%
Final Fantasy Tactics – 35.07%
Pokemon Gold/Silver (Round 2) – 33.43%
Perfect Dark – 18.77%
Deus Ex – 15.80%
Banjo-Kazooie – 14.72%

The adjustments are based on the Majora's Mask ratio, about the fairest thing I can think of at this point, so take it for what you will.

Yeah, FF4 has a great chance to beat Sonic the Hedgehog for third place.

Seriously, Starcraft has 38.5% on FF8 and FF9 right now. Starcraft had 37.1% on FF8 and Xenogears at this point last match. Starcraft and FF8 are performing as expected right now.
