Pokémon Trainer can go to hell. We want Charizard. --- All the way. |
creativename | Posted 5/17/2009 5:55:58 PM | message detail |
The
only ones there that aren't fodder are the FF7/8 characters (even a
couple of them would be fodder, though I wonder if Laguna is stronger
than Seifer), Metroid (would probably do better than the games!),
Guile, maybe Epona, Roy, Shang Tsung, Solidus, and Robo. Seeing Bahamut in a contest would be cool. --- gamefaqscontests.com gamefaqscontests.com/gallery |

Pokemon
Trainer would be fodder, and I doubt Charizard would be stronger than
Pikachu or Mewtwo. Pokemon is the ultimate ensemble cast. I should be really excited for the match coming up- it has the highest concentration of strength so far this contest I think, one of my favorite games (OOT), and is absolutely make or break for my upset special based bracket. I think I'm going to be kind of numb to any results, even Starcraft pulling another huge comeback, until and unless CT finds a way to advance next round, though. --- Link he come to town to win the Gamefaqs Contests. |
MetricTrout | Posted 5/17/2009 6:22:34 PM | message detail |
What
makes you think Trainer would be fodder? Certainly, he could be, which
is why he should be nominated; because there is a whole range of
possible strengths he could have. In fact, here are a few reasons why
he should have decent strength. * Silent protagonist of the 4th strongest Nintendo series (or 5th if you somehow still think that Metroid > Pokemon) * Appeared in every Pokemon game and Brawl * Does not draw the hate the hate that Pikachu or any other Pokemon would The best Charizard could do is be slightly stronger than Pikachu. At worst, it would be another Mewtwo. Not only that, but Charizard has only been prominent in one generation of Pokemon, one that is not even significantly stronger than the others as this match shows. Not everyone started with Pokemon R/B/Y. Trainer, on the other hand, is representative of the series as a whole. --- http://thengamer.com/guru/bracket.php?id=147 |

MGS
is looking pretty pathetic here to me. This is about as ideal of
conditions you can create for it, and it's really, really failing to
impress. I don't really know how you could've expected it to do much better. Not every game is going to pull a Super Mario World and blow their round 1 percentage out of the water despite tougher competition. MGS is only 4% below its round 1 percentage despite this being a significantly stronger match. Also, seeing as G/S and R/B/Y don't appear to be that far apart, does Xenogears beat RBY back in 2004? --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |
red sox 777 | Posted 5/17/2009 6:28:39 PM | message detail |
I
love silent protagonists rather more than anyone I've ever met, but
Pokemon Trainer strikes me as rather....uh....less of a character than,
say, Link, Crono, or Serge. When you think of Legend of Zelda, you
immediately think of Link, when you think of CT, you immediately think
of Crono, when you think of Pokemon.....you think of the pokemon. --- Link he come to town to win the Gamefaqs Contests. |

Also,
I saw someone mention Lopen say how a match with two FF games and
Ocarina of Time is a good opportunity for StarCraft to thrive. It's
also a good opportunity for it to get crushed. And it's easily got the weakest picture tomorrow. I can't even tell what the heck is going on, but I'm not a StarCraft player. --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

I
think a good majority of character strength is derived from the games.
And who is more representative of the Pokemon series than the Pokemon
Trainer himself? It even says Pokemon in his name. Whereas with any particular Pokemon, there is a good chance casual fans will not encounter it. Take Charizard. Even in R/B/Y, there is only a 33% chance that you will have one in your party, another 33% chance that you will see one in your rival's party, and a 33% that you will not see one at all. And if you are playing G/S/C, R/S/E, or D/P/P? 0% chance of encountering a Charizard unless you trade with another version. With the Trainer, you will see him as your player character no matter which version you are playing. --- http://thengamer.com/guru/bracket.php?id=147 |

Just you wait. Starcraft with massive hype could beat FFVIII 1v1! Anyway, votals seem to have finally recovered today. This is our first match to break 120,000 since Brawl's (something that had been relatively common before then) and indeed we are on track for over 130,000 today. --- Link he come to town to win the Gamefaqs Contests. |
deadeyedllv | Posted 5/17/2009 6:48:37 PM | message detail |
That's
it, I'm voting for FF9 based solely on its pic. FF8's pic is pretty bad
so we will get to see how much FF9 can leech. Unfortunately Starcraft's
pic is also horrible. Zelda>FF8 still the heavy favorite IMO. --- You can't run away from trouble, there ain't no place that far. |

As
far as the original starters go, they should have a HUGE 'owned' rate
among all RBY fans. A lot of people back in the day played the game
multiple times, using different starters, and Yellow had them all
anyway. --- http://thengamer.com/guru/ |

*un-lurks* Pokemon Trainer is not even a character unless you're talking about the guy from Brawl. The RBY trainer's canon name is Red - I assume that's who you're referring to. >_> I mean, there's a chance SBAllen would still let "Pokemon Trainer" in since he's let in generic characters before. Just keep in mind that the match pics could end up showing, for example, a Bug Catcher, instead of a player character. *resumes lurking* --- "The courtroom is the garden of holy judgment. Who in their right mind would vote for the trainer over Mewtwo? MetricTrout | Posted 5/17/2009 7:18:09 PM | message detail |
Anyway,
the reason why Pokemon Trainer is a good nomination is because we have
no idea whether he will be strong or weak. He could be stronger than
Pikachu or slightly stronger than Nidoran F and neither would be
terribly surprising. --- http://thengamer.com/guru/bracket.php?id=147 |
creativename | Posted 5/17/2009 7:25:21 PM | message detail |
Him
actually being stronger than Nidoran F. might be surprising. He
wouldn't even have a half-decent board vote. Pokemon has a very, very
deep pool of potentially strong characters but he's not on there. Anyway, on whose match is stronger, FF7 vs. OoT - I think while FF8 is easily the strongest game in either match FF7's pack could be stronger for practical purposes due to the Final Fantasy LFF, depending on how big the LFF is. But it's up in the air, and I'd give a tentative and slight edge to OoT's pack. --- gamefaqscontests.com gamefaqscontests.com/gallery |

I
think somebody asked for vote total stats earlier, to which I shall say
that I thought I already did but it looks like it didn't happen. As far as the previous match, Super Mario 64 kept about 85% of its votes from last round, Chrono Trigger and Symphony of the Night were in the low 60s%, and Yoshi's Island was just under 30%. I'll do it for today's match as soon as the match begins. How come nobody has suggested Brawl as a top 10 game? Even if it is weaker than Melee (which I'm wagering on at the moment), it did beastly in the first round, so yeah, Brawl has top 10 potential. Based on the vote total analysis from last match, we can assume that both SM64 and CT will lose the same percentage of their round 2 vote total for round 3, giving the first game I had ever heard of the advantage. I wonder what its like to be one of those mainstream gamers making a bracket who looked at the last match and thought "Super Mario 64 will beat Chrono Trigger just cuz it's so much more well known."
