What's "everything else"? How often have we seen scenarios like this?

Other SFF/LFF cases, while the stronger game is weakened it's never weakened to the point that Starcraft needs to win.

OoT is much more likely to SFF another japanese game then an american PC game.

You seem to forget that Asia hates Zelda while North America loves it, so I'm not sure where you're going with this.

and that means what? ToS was the only japanese game against american games and it did WORSE in asia then america.

FFVIII is still the favorite, of course. But Starcraft has hope again, after FF1/4. And the past 2 years have showed us that Lopen's anti-establishment vote is real- it usually doesn't show up until the later rounds, but it is real.

So do we agree that where the game is made makes no difference then? Since games need similar trends to have any notable overlap.

No, he's right, consider an analogous case: FFVII vs. OOT vs. CT vs. Starcraft in the final. Which game stands out there?

Hold that match tomorrow and Starcraft maybe gets an extremely distant 3rd.

Starcraft won't be able to do a thing against competition that strong, but its match in a few days is clearly a different case. The fact that FFVIII did what it did despite Xenogears there gives me hope, as does the fact that Final Fantasy IX pulled off an easy win in a surprisingly similar position (another PS1 Square RPG overlapping it, a beloved PC game as the opponent, and Ocarina there to play judge). I do consider FFVIII the favorite, but there's no way I'm calling that match safe.

Are we still debating Starcraft here?

That game is fodder. Just because it was strong in 2004 does not mean it cannot be horribly weak right now. Things have changed.

Show me a case where the stronger game/character was weakened that much besides FF1/4.

Though if Starcraft pulls it off I'm starting the LttP > FFVII train.

Regardless of where people live, people have prefrences of the games they like. Many people enjoy japanese games over american, or american over japanese. So people who prefer japanese made games are more likely to be fans of both OoT and FF8, then OoT and SC.

Starcraft's greatest argument is that Ocarina is going to dominate that match, giving it a chance. its worst argument is this "PC game doesn't overlap with anything!!" argument, because we already saw how that treated Half-Life.

No, it really is a genre thing. But there are no western made JRPGs, or at least, none that I can think of, and basically no Japanese made FPS games or WRPGs, so it often does divide along country lines.

While I do agree that it usually doesn't show up until later rounds, this PURE Zelda/FF poll will be it in its rawest form. There is no Snake to split with L-Block and no Crono to split with Snake. Hatecraft in its purest form.

This might sound like a strange idea to some, but I'm fairly certain that for "rallying" to work, there has to be "rallying."

I'm not seeing much in the way of pre-match hype / rallying, so I just don't expect to see it as much of a factor. If it wins, it'll be because of a fanbase split between FFVIII and IX. It won't be because of a snowballing effect (that would require, again, some sort of awareness beyond this topic that SC is in a match soon, and has an absurdly slim chance and a desire to make that happen), or rallying.

Let's discuss something more interesting now. <_<

Well, here's my stand on StarCraft's match. That match has my favorite to win the whole contest, though there are 15 other games that I wouldn't be upset if they beat Ocarina of Time and won (and yes Final Fantasy VII is one of them).

StarCraft will not be beating Final Fantasy VIII. I will delve into the one thing I like looking at most, vote totals. StarCraft had 34k votes, and Final Fantasy VIII had 52k. Yeah, doesn't look like any SFF will be able to turn that around. I think StarCraft will be able to beat Vivi's game, but whatever.

BTW there are two tiers for games so far IMO. Tier 1 is the games that deserve to win, which I've already posted. So here are the games that are in tier 2, and it's a lot! Tier 2 is "Very, Very, Very Great Game, but contest victory is pushing it." If any of these games beat each other, I wouldn't mind a whole lot.

Mega Man 2
The Legend of Zelda
Civilization
Sonic the Hedgehog
Street Fighter II
Final Fantasy IV
Super Mario Kart
DOOM
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Super Mario RPG
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
EarthBound
Yoshi's Island
Pokemon Red/Blue
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantays VIII
StarCraft
Half-Life
Final Fantasy X
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Kingdom Hearts
Metroid Prime
Grand Theft Auto III
Halo
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Zelda: Wind Waker
God of War
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Oblivion
Metal Gear Solid 3
Okami
World of Warcraft
Gears of War
Shadow of the Colossus
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Grand Theft Auto IV
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Call of Duty 4
BioShock
LittleBigPlanet
Metal Gear Solid 4
Fallout 3

Not to mention that a lot more cheating/proxy prevention methods are in place now.

Not to mention you can't even vote stuff using multiple accounts anymore. I heard from Ulti that this has been in place since the 2007 character battle. I've tested this out on a non-contest poll before. I tested it out on the April Fool's Day poll, where I tried to vote stuff for the invisible poll option. I did the testing overnight when the invisible poll option was getting 0-1 vote updates. Even though I could stuff about 20-25 votes during a 5 minute period, the invisible poll option was still pulling off its standard 0-1 vote updates, showing that my votes weren't going through at all. The fact that you can't vote stuff with multiple accounts anymore could probably explain why Bacon hasn't once removed cheat votes or posted a topic explaining whether or not there was cheating in a close match.
