Like i said earlier SMRPG has a cult fanbase, it was his first rpg and was a big hit.

The game itself however was quite easy with only the secret boss behind the special door in monstro town being the only remote challenge.

I don't think SMRPG is cult though. Phoenix Wright is cult. Suikoden is a cult RPG. Lufia 2 is a cult SNES-RPG. Earthbound is a cult Nintendo-RPG. It would be unfair to consider SMRPG among any of them. SMRPG was just too popular at its time though and helped get a lot of people into RPGs before FF7 hit., and it doesn't help the cause that some of the fanbase considers it the spiritual beginning of Mario's other RPGs like Paper Mario. I might call Mario's RPG-games cult'ish compared to the rest of Mario's resume, but there is very little about Mario that is cult.

Besides, SMRPG is quite strong for a "cult" RPG; SMRPG already came quite close to GE once, and I wonder if it could have come any closer if DKC2 wasn't there in R1. It's now firmly beating another well-received Mario spin-off that sold roughly 123,456,789 more copies, and it's doing it despite FF7. This is great compared to other cult RPGs -- only CT has done better (and that's if you really want to call it cult, though niche's probably the best term).

Really, outside of CT/SMRPG, SMRPG has impressed in every match in one way or another; it smashed SF2 and caused one of the biggest unexpected fanboy-riots to date (though I believe SMRPG was the slight favorite), kept GE on its toes despite DKC2 when many of us thought RE2 could oust it, and now it's showing us that SMRPG is clearly Mario's most favored spin-off in a time when SMK fought tooth and nail against SM twice and MK64 outdid MGS against FF7 despite SF64.


Good show, SMRPG. Now let's get Geno away from Bowser and Squall...!

I think FF9 looks MUCH better than FF8 pic-wise; it's MUCH brighter than the rest, Vivi's clearly seen while it's harder to see Squall and whoever's back that is, and the FF-logo is easier to read. FF8 should still beat FF9, but it might not be as easily as it hoped before. I guess that's good for Starcraft, but I don't expect it to really be in contention unless FF8/9 are really down each others' throats.

I'll have to take your word for it there. to me, it looks like the same damn game, just one's in black and white.

I expect the picture there to not matter at all though. people are going to vote for their fave, and I expect G/S to get a decent number of votes. this won't be anything like tonight's match.

What exactly jumps out as being particularly from R/B/Y and not G/S? I mean that iconic beginning is in every Pokemon game. Sure, someone who really looks at the picture may recognize the rival specifically but come on. I don't think anyone but a more hardcore fan could easily recognize what game that's from specifically

I've never played Pokemon Pearl/Diamond (only first 2 gens), but to me it seems they're cut off and you only see part of their bodies. I might be wrong cuz maybe they just look like that.. but iuno.

Also, though I've not really played G/S/C, has the series taken a shot in the face as far as quality goes?

I've only played games from two generations, R/B/Y and D/P/C. I didn't like what I saw out of the new stuff...I shouldn't be allowed to steamroll through a game with one pokemon and no time spent really training.
