I have a theory that LA is doing very good because the name of the game has "Link" in it. With Link being our greatest contest god, you can imagine that people will vote for anything that says "Link" or has "Link" in the name.

I would argue Zelda is just as big of a name (just look at the character Zelda).

That theory has already fallen flat on its face with "The Legend of Zelda" and Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, and Zelda 1. As awesome as Link is, I don't see why "Link" would be a more powerful name than "The Legend of Zelda."

LTTP's trends don't vary too widely here, but trends in SFF matches tend to get watered down. Super Metroid with a great board vote, but didn't finish above 20% in any demographic until the second night vote. Super Mario Kart does its best work in the morning. This match followed last round's almost exactly, except Super Metroid did better at the very beginning and Mario Kart did better with the ASV. DKC did well with the Power Hour and the ASV.

Maybe, it's easily possible, but I honestly can't come up with a reason why Classic Link could break 60% other than the fact that his match picture said "Link" under it instead of "Classic". That match is one of just several matches where the match picture resulted in an overperformance, in this case, it was Classic Link overperforming.

Sonic probably overlaps with Nintendo a little, and Megaman somewhat more. Sonic the character likely overlaps with Nintendo more than his games though: Nintendo fans (especially the younger ones who started on the N64 or later) recognize Sonic as a character but often haven't played his Genesis games.

That was a weird match. It really does take a lot of SFF for Sonic 2 to drop over 50% from round 1 to round 2. Sonic 2 got almost 81% in round 1, then got slightly under 30% in round 2.

Round 1 was a match with an exclusive Sega Genesis game by Sega.

Sonic 2 was obviously going to do a massive SFF beat down on it.

After seeing the FF/FFIV split, I'm very hesitant calling the original Sonic stronger than 2, which seems to be the clearly preferred one among the fanbase. At best, I'd give it equal indirect strength, but it's going to end up looking so much better through two rounds.

The first one is easily explained by it being the most casual, Nintendo option and by SFII sucking ass. The second round is much tougher to explain, though. It outdid nearly everyone's expectations and barely fell against SFII in terms of relative percentage (when I believe more than half of us thought it would fall enough to lose). It really might be best explained by wonkiness whenever Mario and Sonic meet up, and if that's the case, I have no idea what we're in store for next round.
