Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 713

-LusterSoldier- | Posted 5/13/2009 6:33:06 AM | message detail
A better estimate should have been 50-51% so it's doing about expected.

Even with the ASV, Zelda isn't going to rise up to 55%, but it could break 51% during that time.

The only expectation you could really have for this match is for LttP to match its performance against SM in 2004. Which by the end of the match I suppose it'll be close enough to doing

Now I will do my usual vote total stats. Yeah, you may say it's getting annoying, but Mario 3's match tells me that I HAVE to focus on vote totals to get matches right now. And my prediction score is ten points ahead of my bracket's.

Super Mario World's vote total was about 95.41% of its vote total in round 1.
Final Fantasy's vote total was about 28.09% of its vote total in round 1.
Final Fantasy IV's vote total was about 46.9% of its vote total in round 1.
Mega Man 3's vote total was about 25.79% of its vote total in round 1.

Comments: "Darling I don't know why I go to extremes." That pretty much sums it all up. Super Mario World did overwhelmingly well this match, to the point where we could consider it a top 20 game at worst (which is quite cool since it is one of the few games in this tourney which I've actually beaten, though that was on the GBA version, but still). What happened? Well, that's a question I have to ask to everybody in the match, because FFI, FFIV, and MM3 all lost over half of their votes, and the former and the latter both only kept less than a third of their votes from round 1. Is SFF just this bad? I'm extremely baffled!!! The list of vote totals just make everything more sick.

1. Super Mario World
2. Super Mario Bros. 3
3. Super Mario Bros.
4. The Legend of Zelda
5. Tetris
6. Mega Man 2
7. Final Fantasy IV
8. Sonic the Hedgehog
9. Street Fighter II
10. Pac-Man
11. Final Fantasy
12. Donkey Kong
13. Metroid
14. Mega Man 3
15. The Secret of Monkey Island
16. Ninja Gaiden

Comments: Our SFFd entries all dropped by quite a lot, but look who's the new #1 in town! I'm still confused. I wonder how things will go today, especially considering that Super Metroid, Mario Kart, and DK Country all weren't very high to begin with.

Last round, Super Metroid was stalling during the first hour of the DSV before SMK starting pulling a second comeback. It looks like this is happening again in this match.

Don't look at individual updates for this kind of thing. They're very misleading due to the high variance between updates. Look at whole hours, or better, blocks of multiple hours. As I recall, SMK was doing this at around this time last round too- it turned into a stall fairly quickly, and should do so here as well.

Okay, as far as Final Fantasies go, according to those crummy votal things, VII > X > IV > VIII > I > VI > XII > IX. Today's match is too close to call, so time to analyze tomorrow's match and recap.

Final Fantasy VI - This is one of the three games in this division that I'd consider worthy of winning the entire contest, what with its excellent story, huge cast, and cutting-edge graphics, but its round 1 showing does make it look like contender to the Spring Contest crown in any way, shape or form. Last time Kefka's game scored about 72% on Mortal Kombat and DOOM before doing surprisingly well on Zelda 3. Unfortunately, it proved that performance to be a fluke right afterwards in this contest, not even breaking 60% on Link's Awakening. Did it overperform because of seeding last time? Will it need Dissidia to spring back into the limelight?

Zelda: Link's Awakening - Best handheld adventure ever? Certainly a candidate, if not immediate winner. And since this is ZeldaFAQs, Link's Awakening has a good amount of fans, who managed to propel it past Mega Man X and Phantasy Star IV last round at put a good number on what was thought to be a top 10 game. But its completely possible that its performance last right was just name value, right? Right? I mean, there's no way a handheld game could be THIS strong, right?

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - The game that introduced Tails and Super Sonic, and it sold better than the first Sonic, didn't it? Sonic 2 has unfortunately disappointed in both contests its been in, as the first time it got blown out by Mario World and this time it disappointed against Mortal Kombat II and Secret of Mana. Sonic fading? Certainly so.

Mortal Kombat 2 - Perhaps the most overrated game of all time, but let's not get into that discussion right now. Plus, Mortal Kombat had a good amount of influence on the industry, didn't it? There isn't much to say about MK2's performance last round, so let's just say that Johnny Cage was one hell of an imposing figure in that pic.

Eh, let's right MK2 off right now, although I wouldn't be too surprised if it advanced given the Nintendo split. Link's Awakening will lose votes to Sonic 2, so which game will come out on top? Sonic 2 did better with vote totals last round, but only by about 5k votes, and that's not much, is it? I can honestly see any of the three games aside from Final Fantasy VI (the victor, of course) taking 2nd place, but for now I'll trust Link's Awakening.

Final Fantasy VI - 35%, Zelda: Link's Awakening - 25%, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - 23%, Mortal Kombat 2 - 17%

Prediction: Final Fantasy VI > Zelda: Link's Awakening
Bracket: Final Fantasy VI > Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Favorites: Final Fantasy VI > Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Favorites Bracket: Final Fantasy VI > Sonic the Hedgehog 2

It's interesting how comebacks seems to be just as easy in fourways regardless of percentages. A 500 vote lead when both entries combine for 40% of the votes is the same as a 500 vote lead when they combine for 70% of the vote, though logically we thought that wouldn't be true at all.

The first couple of hours is when a huge group of people who generally know about the contest come and vote when the poll is first put up resulting in unsteady trends. Generally, the time after that is a better stick for judging how stuff will go. And the fact that SMK has overall been doing better than round 1 for 80% of the match is a good sign

The first two hours vs the first three hours shouldn't be considered vastly different, that's all I'm sayin. People are not robots and they pretty reasonably might come to vote at +/- one hour. You see it with Halo plenty, sometimes it has these fits of "time to fight" in hour 3 when it should be getting crushed by strict trends. You'd have a point if say, Super Metroid waited till like 6:00 to start dropping last time but by 3 hours in the lead was roughly the same.

It's not clear whether the first couple of hours or the other hours will be a better predictor of how the ASV will look. I said jokingly it was as over as Crono/Vincent 2008 was after 5 minutes when Crono was way behind 2007's trends.....maybe that'll turn out to be true. (Crono was behind 2007 trends the first couple of hours, a little ahead of them from then until the ASV, and then well ahead of them during the ASV). I still like Super Metroid here though.
