A = Strongest Character
B = Character Weaker than A
C = Character Weaker than B
To figure out a character's Xsts Percentage ---> [(CvB)(BvA)]/50 = CvA
To compare how C would do against B ---> [(CvA)/(BvA)]*50 = CvB
To figure out how B would do against A ---> [(CvA)/(CvB)]*50 = BvA

~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. The earliest example we have of this is Arthas/Diablo leeching each other half to death and letting KOS-MOS sneak into second place back in 2007. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no expected chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength dictates. A lot of these entrants are naturally weak, but a lot of things come along that make little to no sense. A great example is Zero -- he scored 47% on Crono and won several updates, then one round later he gets disproportionally blown out once Link enters the picture. This factor also works in reverse, when an obvious first place game does worse than expected thanks to smart voters helping a game come in second place. The final of 2008 is a good example of this, where Snake stayed even with Link until the day vote and ultimately defeated Cloud. (Credit to red sox 777 and Leonhart4 for the examples)

Previous stats have shown SMB3 > SMW, yet people are ignoring this year that SMW just looks a lot better.

Yeah, and it's NOT because of the stats. It's because of "common sense." The stat argument is "stats clearly show that SMW is doing better this year so it should be the favorite." I know it's cool to say "haha you're depending on the stats" but get real.

The thing with the original FF is that it is very vulnerable to SFF from any of the newer games. (IV and up)

The people who remember FF from when it came out, and saw what a revolutionary game it was are few and far behind on this site. A lot of people on the site have played it due to a sense of history, but those people probably got started on some other game in the series. Also they have all the newer games instantly available, and since all the newer games is better then FF1, they will be preferred to it.

Replying to a post in the last topic:

There's nothing wrong with stats-based picks. They have a far better track record than personal expectations- that's why the Gurus dominate the casuals every year, even when our brackets go up in flames.

However, I don't see any stats-based or non-stats-based arguments for SMW > SMB3, as it stands.

Just because I overshot it doesn't mean Mario 3 put up a bad performance.

How can you overshoot by 10% and then claim it was a good performance? Relative to what? Your expectations? Whether or not you think Mario 3 is the lock next round, you've gotta admit that Mario World looks light years better today. If you kept the Mario titles secret, everyone on the board would think Mario 3 would be busting this performance while Mario World had yesterday's.

SMB3 faced Monkey Island (Uber-fodder), Sonic and SFII (Glorified fodder) and got a meager 48%. SMW is facing much tougher competition. SMB3 could still rSFF SMW but if they split too much, FF4 gets first. FTR, I have SMB3 in the finals but I can smell blood on SMB3.

Mario World's putting up better numbers, yes, but it has reason to. Like I said, Link did better against Cloud, Sephiroth, and Samus than he did against Sephiroth, Vincent, and Mario. Does that make ANY sense at all? No, but it happened.

And the reason I put Mario 3 up so high was because I expected it to clobber Sonic 1 with SFF. It didn't, which doesn't make me think any less of Mario 3, although it seems to make everyone else think less of it.

It should. If it couldn't clobber Sonic yesterday, what makes you think Sonic won't take votes from smb3 possibly next round? I see it more likely then SMW at least since SMW and Sonic were big rivals, but SMB3 not so much because it was before Sonics time

The vote totals are pretty low right now, too.

But the only reason I can think of for Mario World to be doing that much better is for it to be pummeling Mega Man 3 with SFF here.

Which appears to be the case since Mega Man 3 is doing much worse against FFIV.

If you want to feel good about a game that's getting 30% on the weaker of the two games it would need to beat, be my guest!

I can see the argument about heinous fanbase splits after this match, but not ones (significantly!) worse than 100%. Something happened such that Mario World underperformed last round, that's my current take on it.

Yesterday's chart:

Time | Sonic 1 | SFII | Mario 3 | Monkey Isle | Demographic
EBV | 23.86% | 19.51% | 50.47% | 6.16% | (0:00-0:05)
PHV | 21.44% | 21.42% | 50.44% | 6.70% | (0:00-1:00)
FNV | 21.97% | 22.74% | 45.48% | 9.81% | (1:00-6:00)
BSV | 22.62% | 19.96% | 47.79% | 9.63% | (6:00-9:00)
DSV | 22.04% | 20.50% | 48.85% | 8.60% | (9:00-14:30)
ASV | 23.69% | 19.61% | 49.77% | 6.93% | (14:30-22:00)
SNV | 22.09% | 20.60% | 50.70% | 6.61% | (22:00-24:00)

Great board vote and Power Hour for Mario 3, but that was a huge drop off for the night vote. It gradually worked its way back up for the rest of the match. Sonic 1 had a strong board vote, but a weak night. Good ASV for it here. SFII did its best work at night, as you'd expect, and it got hit hard during the morning and ASV. Monkey Island with a good night vote and even a good morning vote. Board vote was the worst time for it.

Yesterday's stats:

Super Mario Bros. 3 – 50.00%
Sonic the Hedgehog – 31.69%
Street Fighter II – 29.78%
The Secret of Monkey Island – 14.25%

Upper Half Stats

Super Mario Bros. 3 – 50.00%
Sonic the Hedgehog (Round 1) – 33.07%
Sonic the Hedgehog (Round 2) – 31.69%
Street Fighter II (Round 2) – 29.78%
Street Fighter II (Round 1) – 28.19%
The Secret of Monkey Island (Round 2) – 14.25%
Civilization – 12.07%
The Secret of Monkey Island (Round 1) – 11.37%
Castlevania III – 11.23%
SimCity – 10.46%
Tecmo Super Bowl – 6.83%

Sonic round 1 is based off of getting 55% on SFII round 2, and SFII round 1 is based off of getting 45% on Sonic round 2, if that makes any sense whatsoever.
