Uh...no? What difference does it make? FF1's performance was still much more impressive than FFIV's.

We've already seen SMB and LoZ perform better than other games in their series would. Why should FF1 be any different?

Maybe I'm a bit too high on SMB, but I think it beats SMW and is the 2nd strongest Mario title overall.

The point I was making there is that being first in the series doesn't mean much in a direct matchup with another game from your fanbase. How many people would expect FFVI vs. FF to be close? How much stronger do you think FFVI is over FF right now?

Among the fanbase -- where most of these votes are coming from -- FFIV is the preferred of the two. That doesn't mean FF's strength isn't legit, or that FFIV is significantly stronger than FF, just that the fanbase has a clear preference when you put the two up against each other. I know I voted for FF last round and will vote for FFIV this round. I'm sure it's the same with a bunch of other people.

I also wouldn't compare FF1 to SMB1 either. FF1 is plenty strong, but it doesn't get nearly the same type of prestige that the other gets. It's not entirely the same there -- and it's not like FFIV isn't without its significance in the industry and in the series itself.

And on top of all this is what mnm mentioned about FFIV being far more recent in most people's minds. It's been a bigger game these past ten years to most people than FF1 has. That can well make a difference.

And I think you're greatly overestimating FFIV's strength. I wouldn't take it to do anywhere near to what FF1 has done so far; FFIV could win on factors like you just listed, but indirectly FF1 is easily the stronger game. It's an uphill battle.

Can't say I agree with that at all. If you swapped the two in the bracket I wouldn't expect FFIV to have performed any worse against SMW than FF1 did. These are two games that shouldn't be worlds apart; in fact, they have a lot of reason to be both be right around the same strength, regardless of which one is stronger.

FF1 has a very real shot at winning this, for sure. But the case for FFIV is a sound one, and probably the better one considering FF arguments tend to revolve around that 40% in 2k4 and this 'first in the series' stuff. Honestly, I'm more worried about the pic being the difference maker than I am how round 1 went.

I cannot see FF1 being stronger than FF2 in a direct matchup.

Also, the SMW/FF1/Battletoads match seems extremely fishy to me. It drew way more votes than it had any right to, even if you discount Battletoads. I would hesitate to draw any conclusions directly off of that.

FF1's being really underrated here. As I said in my analysis I think the FF fanbase prefers FF1 more, it's just that less have it as their favorite which makes it underperform in those multi way polls.

Valid points are being spouted here. Nobody actually considers the original Final Fantasy to be their favorite and if paired against a more legitimate FF, it would fold. But frankly it matters not because Mega Man 3 will beat both.

So, does Mega Man 3 have a shot at advancing?

As you can see, Mario 3 is performing worse on Sonic 1 than Mario World did on Sonic 2. The primary explanation is Sonic 1 being stronger, which may be. But another overlooked factor here, I think, is generational SFF. Mario World has it over any Sonic game, being from the same era. Mario 3 does not.

Nor does Mario World have it over Mega Man 3. That should allow MM3 to hold up to SFF fairly decently, at least better than Sonic. Meanwhile, SMW also has generational SFF on Final Fantasy 2, presumed to be the stronger of the two.

I am not saying that Mega Man 3 advancing is likely; just that it is possible.

Mega Man 3 has a damn good shot here, I think. I think Mega Man games are going to thrive as the opponents get stronger. Did you notice how Mega Man 2's percent barely moved an inch from R1 to R2? Part of it can be attributed to the dork, but I'm not sure that's everything at play there.

I don't think MM3 has much of a chance. It's clearly the weakest game here by a good margin, and whatever votes it's going to lose to SMW isn't going to help it. The best case scenario is probably hoping that the FF games split 50/50, but I don't think that's gonna happen regardless of who wins. I think whichever one pulls it off will do so pretty convincingly.
