Ugh, I hate leaving out one word that changes the entire meaning of the post.

I'm not in total agreement there. We've seen fanbase splits and Stand Out Factor amount to some crazy stuff in the character 4ways. Games might be more static performers (although I think we'll have to wait at least another round to confirm that), but I'm still not counting that bastard Starcraft out.

I'd say SC has about as much chance of advancing as MM.

It could happen, but I'd be happy taking an account bet against it.

Chrono Cross: Darn it, Chrono Cross, you were supposed to make FFIX lose so I don't have to sweat bullets about FFVIII possibly getting LFF'd out of making it to round three! For that, you get banished to the land of convoluted plots and awful battle systems! oh wait you're already there LOL XDXDXDXDXD

Grade: XD

Final Fantasy IX: It beat Half-Life with ease and scored about 30% on Ocarina of Time even with Chrono Cross in the poll. I'd say that's pretty good, all things considered. You really couldn't have expected too much more from it.

Grade: B

Half-Life: More like half-points in my bracket darn you gfnw

Grade: F

Ocarina of Time: Scored only about 1.25% less than FFVII on what seems to be a tougher four-pack. Watching FFVII and OoT play the "Anything you can do, I can do better" game for the next few rounds will be fun.

Grade: A

It's like we talked about before, it was obvious LFF would show up in big ways eventually and it was ridiculous for anyone to be saying we didn't have it.

However Starcraft is just too weak compared to VIII, I really doubt it poses a serious threat. VIII should blitz IX pretty bad too. Also we're not just talking about the leap to an VIII/IX split, but the marginal difference between an VIII/IX split and an VIII/Xenogears split. Just about the only thing Starcraft has going for it is that if it's a close match it might get stuffers.

Fayt.

Starcraft never pulls its miracles until everyone is convinced it has no chance. 1100 down and falling with 6 hours to go against Halo's ASV/SNV, 2000 down against Wind Waker.....Starcraft is just like Frog: it waits until we've all given up before striking.

Seriously though, FFVIII/FFIX should be a pretty severe fanbase split, and if FFIX is both reasonably close to FFVIII and doesn't get SFF'd, Starcraft can still get to its striking range for rallying, which is a good deal lower here than in 1v1s.

1998-2000 Overall

The Good: Square and Nintendo dominate this division to the surprise of no one. Metal Gear Solid and StarCraft are the only games not made by Square or Nintendo in the second round, and chances are good that one of them won't be there in round three either. Strong performances by FFVIII, FFIX, OoT, RBY, and GS here.

The STAR: Final Fantasy VIII > RBY book it

The Bad: Square and Nintendo didn't get out of here without any blemishes either. Final Fantasy Tactics and Majora's Mask looked pretty pathetic in their matches. Half-Life flops in a situation where it has no excuses and put the writing on the wall for Metroid Prime.

The TURD: This is a pretty tight competition between StarCraft and Final Fantasy Tactics, but I'll give an edge to StarCraft simply because there are a lot of people who expected the game to thrive in this format and replicate what it did last time.

Now I'm thinking, what peercentage can we expect from Fallout 3? I heard that it might SFF everything else in the fourpack and beat MGS4's score because of it, but who knows...

And why did Half-Life flop anyway? I'm still confused. It should've done better than that considering that it was against two Square games.

2001-2003 GRADES:

Final Fantasy X: I've got this game going to the finals, so it needed to come out with a strong performance, and it did. Beating MGS2 by 18% or so isn't a small feat and 45% overall is basically what it needed for me to keep my confidence level in this game going far high.

Grade: A

Metal Gear Solid 2: And after MGS4's performance today, MGS2 has basically cemented itself as the weakest MGS game of the four, which should surprise no one. I expected FFX to beat MGS2 fairly easily, but not to the point where it was closer to Morrowind than it was to FFX.

Grade: C-

Silent Hill 2: Pyramid Head can apparently get 17% on anything, but what's the deal with Silent Hill 2? Come on now!

Grade: F

Morrowind: Some people viewed this performance as impressive because we basically expected nothing from this game. It did do better than most of us were expecting, but this was nothing stellar. It still got nearly tripled by FFX, on the level of Shenmue!

Grade: C

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: How much of its victory can be attributed to Prime/Paper Mario LFF is uncertain, but what is certain is that few people were expecting much out of GTA as a whole after how badly the series has bombed since 2005. People were skeptical and with good reason. It went out and beat Prime anyway and with relative ease by the time everything was said and done.

Grade: B

Kingdom Hearts: I think most people were expecting Kingdom Hearts to win, but not like THIS. It beat down everyone in this match with ease, clearing 60% against Vice City and Prime. Now it's set itself up to advance to round 3 despite the presence of Final Fantasy X. That's how easily it won (and how badly MGS2 did the match before).

Grade: A

Metroid Prime: You can blame Paper Mario all you want, but there's no question that Metroid Prime flopped. You can add Prime and Paper Mario together, and Kingdom Hearts still beats them both by 2.5% or so. We halfway should have seen this one coming after Half-Life's flop a few days prior. Maybe it advances to round two with a neutral opponent instead of Paper Mario, but it wouldn't stand a chance of getting to round three.

Grade: D-

Paper Mario: Man, that was one heck of an ASV. Who in the world expected that?

Grade: C-

Pretty unlikely. KH has a better chance of beating out MGS2 for second than GTA does of coming in anything but last. Beating Metroid Prime ain't that big of a feat.

Maybe it's just my higher than normal Portal respect, or the intense GTA disrespect I have, but I consider this performance, now that we've reached the end of the day and MGS4 dropping a negligible percentage, to be significantly better than SSBB's. The only thing that gives me pause is that I didn't expect Bioshock to be as close to Portal as it is, but I was having trouble getting a read on that game to begin with. I would expect Portal/Bioshock/LBP to demolish GTA4/SF4/P4, and seeing as how Brawl has never beaten MGS4 with more than three entries in the match I'm feeling pretty good about the division finals!

Whoa whoa whoa! Looking around this topic and looking at the betting spread topic, it seems like everyone expects Mass Effect to come in last. Left 4 Dead is going to come easily in last and I expect ME to give Halo 3 a run for its money. L4D would be lucky to break 15%.
XxSoulxX | Posted 5/7/2009 8:16:37 PM | message detail

Whatever FPS fanbase splitting there will be, Halo 3 and L4D will be able to hold their own. Fallout 3 has Mass Effect's number in every way when it comes to WRPGs, however - this is almost like putting Oblivion up against Morrowind.

Personally, my top 10 Stars and Turds of round 1 are:

Stars:
1. KotOR
2. Tales of Symphonia
3. Pokemon RBY
4. Kingdom Hearts
5. Call of Duty 4
6. FF8
7. Secret of Mana (while it didn't advance, it still did relatively well)
8. Link's Awakening
9. FF9
10. Pokemon GS

Turds:
1. Mega Man 2 (WTF, man. You should've gotten at least 40% with a fourpack as weak as this)
2. Street Fighter 2 (Losing to Sonic by almost 10000 votes would've been acceptable - if Sonic didn't ass it up as usual, that is.)
3. Sonic 3
4. Final Fantasy 6
5. Final Fantasy Tactics
6. Majora's Mask
7. GTA: San Andreas (WTF. You had NO REASON WHATSOEVER to come in last. None at all.)
8. Starcraft (In a format which supposedly benefited it, it ended up closer to Soul Calibur than FF8)
9. Half-Life (You should've been able to take advantage of Square LFF and move on. Instead you end up closer to Chrono Cross than FF9.)
10. Yoshi's Island (How could you struggle with Earthbound, of all games...)
