Agreed. Would TMNT4 have been acceptable for that division? That would be the best rep by far. Yeah, I think we looked it up and it was released in 1991, so it would've qualified. Heck, all the old Turtles games would've qualified for the 1989-1991 division. --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

Division 1989-1991 Overall The Good: Mario 3 managed to score 75.85% in a poll with three other games. I don't think any poll could match that except for maybe another Male/Female poll if they just make up a couple of other genders...Both Final Fantasy games also put up solid performances here. The STAR: Like I mentioned before, Sonic 1 blew SFII away in a highly debated match where more people favored SFII than Sonic 1. That was probably only the second impressive performance we've seen from Sonic in this format (the other being Sonic/Duke/Gordon/Sub-Zero right after he was announced to be in Brawl). The Bad: Castlevania III, Civilization, SimCity, Tecmo Super Bowl, Monkey Island, Prince of Persia, Crystalis, and River City Ransom. That's eight games that got 10% or less in their matches. That's half of the division. Enough said. The TURD: Street Fighter II. Look at today's poll if you have any further doubts. --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

1992-1994 GRADES Gunstar Heroes: At least it had an awesome picture. Grade: F Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Sonic 1 goes and gives everyone high expectations, and Sonic 3 brings everything back to normal. This game has no excuses. It can't blame Gunstar Heroes because the two of them combined are still 5% behind Super Mario Kart and Super Metroid. This match just proves that we should've had Sonic 3 & Knuckles. No doubt in my mind it would've won this poll! Grade: F Super Mario Kart: Mario Kart losing handily to Mega Man and Mega Man games bombing left most people not expecting much out of this game. It really confused me why this game should be so weak because like everyone I know (including non-gamers) love the first two Mario Kart games. Looks like I should've gone with my gut on this one! It gave Super Metroid a fight all day but fell just short, but that was better than most anyone expected. Grade: A Super Metroid: Hey, it got first place and beat down Sonic 3 despite Super Mario Kart, which before the contest may have been considered an accomplishment, but when you consider the fact that it could never shake loose Super Mario Kart, it seems a lot less impressive. At this point, it's obvious that Samus is much stronger than her games, something that you can perhaps attribute partially to Smash Bros. as well. Grade: B- --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

Donkey Kong Country:
Everyone was expecting LTTP to crush DKC, and with good reason. Zelda
is the King of SFF, and DK is the Chump of SFF. But this day was
different. There's no doubt LTTP SFF'd it, but it still managed to hold
on and beat Doom anyway. It'd be interesting to see how strong DKC is
on its own two feet, but this was a solid win. Grade: A- Doom: Another game that had absolutely no excuses for flopping. Doom was in prime position to take advantage of Nintendo SFF for two straight rounds, and it couldn't even do it once. Admittedly, DKC was tougher than expected and we knew Doom wasn't THAT strong, but this was still an awful performance. Grade: F Streets of Rage 2: Hey, you can play as a kangaroo wearing boxing gloves who still kicks everyone anyway. If that's not worthy of an A+, I don't know what is. Grade: A+ Link to the Past: I think some people were disappointed by LTTP's performance, but I think it did fine. DKC just turned out to be stronger than we thought it was. Grade: B --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

Final Fantasy VI:
Barely breaking 40% against this fourpack is hardly what you'd expect
from a game that's supposed to be in the top 10. MMX may be the
strongest Mega Man game and LA may be a stronger Zelda game than
expected, but giving up nearly 44% to Link's Awakening is inexcusable.
That makes it seem like FFVI vs. Zelda 1 or TP would be a tight match.
Seriously, LA/MMX/PSIV vs. FFXII/HL2/PW: Which pack is stronger? Grade: D Mega Man X: It scored 38% on Final Fantasy VI, which is good because MM3 got 41% on FFIV. It's probably the strongest Mega Man game in the contest, but it just happened to face a stronger Zelda game. It wasn't a bad performance by any means, although it was favored to beat LA here. Grade: C- Phantasy Star IV: Hey, it's the third game to get 4% or less in its match. Grade: F Link's Awakening: I was afraid of this game from day one (I had FFVI > MMX in my bracket), and it showed that my fears were not unfounded. I guess being THE handheld Zelda game is worth more than I thought. It put up a solid number against FFVI and beat MMX handily. What more could you want? Grade: A+ --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

Mortal Kombat II:
I actually had this game beating Sonic 2 in my bracket. Whoops.
Strangely enough, it gets almost exactly the same percentage on Sonic 2
that SFII got on Sonic 1. You'd think Sonic 2 is the stronger of the
two. MKII vs. SFII: Who you got? Grade: C Secret of Mana: This was probably one of the most impressive performances from a game that didn't advance, in my mind. I fully expected Secret of Mana to get crushed here, but it managed to get 26% against a Mortal Kombat game and a Sonic game. Sure, they're not the most popular franchises around here, but they're a heck of a lot more known than Secret of Mana is, and I figured this game was long forgotten. I was wrong. I should probably get back to playing this game sometime. Grade: A- Shining Force II: Hey, the original Shining Force lost to Sonic 2, so why shouldn't the sequel get a shot? Grade: F Sonic the Hedgehog 2: Another disappointing performance by Sonic Team. This is supposed to be the strongest game in the series? If so, this is a pretty weak series. I still say Sonic 3 & Knuckles is stronger! Grade: C- --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |

Match XXX: Call of Duty 4 vs. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl vs. Super Mario Galaxy vs. Team Fortress 2 Information: Name: Call of Duty 4 Year: 2007 System: PC, PS3, Xbox 360 GotY Performance: 1st in Best Multi-Platform Game, 2nd in Game of the Year, 2nd in Game of the Year (Final) Name: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl Year: 2007 System: DS GotY Performance: 2nd in Best DS Game Name: Super Mario Galaxy Year: 2007 System: Wii GotY Performance: 1st in Best Wii Game, 1st in Game of the Year, 1st in Game of the Year (Final) Name: Team Fortress 2 Year: 2007 System: PC GotY Performance: 3rd in Best Multi-Platform Game (as The Orange Box) Analysis It’s the Game of the Year 2007 reunion party. Really second match of the division and we still won’t have much idea of how 2008 and 2007 compare in strength. In this match we have the top 2 games of 2007 fighting it out, a Pokemon game attempting to go three for three in impressive performances and a game made famous by The Orange Box. The main attraction is how well Galaxy can perform compare to what Brawl is doing today. Team Fortress 2 was lucky to be packaged with The Orange Box because while fun on its own it would be nowhere near as popular as it is now. However it advancing would be a long shot. Both Spy and Heavy did well in the character battle for a game where characters aren’t important, but getting Call of Duty 4 as an opponent isn’t exactly helping the cause. Team Fortress 2 may avoid last if Pokemon gets SFF, but taking second a very unlikely long shot. Convincingly winning the game of the year in 2007 gives Super Mario Galaxy the best chance for first, especially when Call of Duty 4 is more likely to have dropped in strength since 2007 than Super Mario Galaxy. What Galaxy needs to do here is show whether or not it has the strength to go up against Brawl next round. Brawl and Galaxy has been hyped since the beginning of the contest and with Brawl performing as expected it’s now Galaxy’s turn to show whether or not it still has strength. Call of Duty 4 is the favourite to get second in this match. However like Gears of War I expect Call of Duty 4 to not have aged well and will look a bit worse against Galaxy than it did in 2007. On the other hand Call of Duty 4 is still played and if there is a drop in strength it wouldn’t be as Gears of War. Still the only competition this game has is a Pokemon game that may or may not get SFF. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl is the wild card in this match. Earlier this round we’ve watched RBY and GS perform above our expectations and some expect DP to do the same. In the Pokemon hierarchy DP is probably the third favourite out of the four generations and there is a bit gap between GSC and DP. Call of Duty 4 may have dropped since 2007, but I still think DP is still below it and besides Super Mario Galaxy is in the same match. Pokemon usually does a good job avoiding SFF, but it still is affected and if one series is going to SFF Pokemon it would be Mario. This match could have potential to be interesting, but it is more likely to be boring. The two strongest games of the GotY should take first and second. As much as I like Pokemon, DP isn’t strong enough to compete like RBY and GSC and with Galaxy in the same poll could be the final nail in the coffin. charmander6000’s Bracket: Super Mario Galaxy > Call of Duty 4 charmander6000’s Prediction: Super Mario Galaxy – 37.48%, Call of Duty 4 – 25.14%, Pokemon D/P – 20.84%, Team Fortress 2 – 16.54% --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls BGE2 - Today's Match: SSBB > GTAIV Points: 81/112 |

1992-1994 Overall The Good: Link to the Past/DKC/Super Mario Kart/Super Metroid is another one of those matchups I'm really anticipating in round 2. Anyone who can predict how that one goes deserves some major kudos. Solid performance from Secret of Mana. The STAR: I gotta give a slight edge to Link's Awakening, especially as we've come to realize as this contest progresses that it wasn't just franchise-fueled. The game evidently has some seriously strength. The Bad: Man, this division had several disappointing performances: Sonic 3, Doom, FFVI, Sonic 2, and even Super Metroid to an extent. That seemed to be the theme of this division. The games we didn't expect to do quite so well did well, and the games we thought would do well...didn't. Strange division. The TURD: I thought about giving this to Final Fantasy VI, but when Sonic puts up two turd-worthy performances in the same division, you gotta give the edge to the hedgehog, especially after what Sonic 3 did. --- http://www.court-records.net/animation/phoenix-superobjection.gif |
