Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 704

LeonhartFour | Posted 5/5/2009 5:40:33 PM | message detail
Mega Man 2: As already stated, we waited five years for THIS? This makes the Series Contest performance make absolutely no sense, especially in light of what Mario Kart did later. Metroid doubled Pac-Man in 2004, and Mega Man 2 lets it get 44% against it? That's pathetic. This is basically the opposite end of the spectrum with Tetris. Total flop. The only reason it doesn't fail is because at least it still got first place.

Grade: D-

Pac-Man: Hey, Pac-Man did better than most people expected, but that's more Mega Man 2's fault than anything else. It's not going anywhere next round, but nobody can really complain when Pac-Man manages to advance in a match.

Grade: C+

Pong: Here's one of those games that actually managed to avoid single digits! Still, it finished in last place against a pack of pretty weak games. Nobody was really expecting it to advance here though, so it's not too much of a disappointment.

Grade: D

The Oregon Trail: While it failed to ford the river, this game definitely did better than I expected. I thought it was going to bomb hard. I gotta give it some credit for that.

Grade: B

Duck Hunt: Yeah, same cartridge SFF or whatever, but come on, no big day vote comeback or anything! Lettin' me down! This ought to let you know just how much Donkey Kong sucks.

Grade: F

Galaga: GalAUGH

Grade: F

Ninja Gaiden: Man, this division sucks when we've got a game advancing with 12.58% of the vote. darn you divisions by generation

Grade: D-

Super Mario Bros.: I was definitely interested in seeing what this game could do, and it didn't disappoint. I knew this game would be legitimately strong.

Grade: A

Dragon Warrior III: Man, grading games like this would be too much of a pain if I were doing a serious analysis. Good thing I'm not and can just do this!

Grade: F

Contra: I've already expressed my thoughts on this one, so suffice it to say this and leave it at that: CONTRABANNED

Grade: F

Metroid: Gotta give the game credit for not getting COMPLETELY destroyed by Legend of Zelda. Sure, it still got pounded with SFF, but it still advanced, which is more than most of us thought.

Grade: C

The Legend of Zelda: After Mario Bros. put up 70% the match before, Zelda had to come out and prove it was ready for the challenge, and it definitely did that. 61% on a much tougher fourpack definitely leaves next round's match up in the air and one of my more anticipated round 2 matchups.

1989-1991 GRADES

Castlevania III: Yeah, pretty obvious that no one cares about Castlevania games except for Symphony of the Night, and it's becoming doubtful how much people care about that one.

Grade: F

Civilization: Hey, it didn't finish last. Better than I expected.

Grade: D-

Sonic the Hedgehog: What is this? The King of the Fourway Flop...impressing? Strange, but true! A lot of people (self included) had SFII beating Sonic 1 here, but it proved the doubters wrong and won this match going away. Could this game be the strongest one in the series or does SFII suck that much? *looks at current poll* Could be more of the latter!

Grade: A

Street Fighter II: It's amazing how a series with only two entries in it could possibly be the biggest turds of the contest, series-wise. No excuses for SFII here, getting beat by Sonic 1 as badly as it did by Mario RPG. Seems like this game has dropped a good bit since the last time we saw it. Man, I'd hate to be one of those people who has SFII going far!

Battletoads: 4chan tried to make it interesting, but they quickly realized it was a lost cause. This ain't no Virtual Console poll, son!

Grade: F

Final Fantasy: This game went a long way to proving its strength is legit and not just franchise-powered. 45% on Super Mario World is no joke and seemed to validate its 40% on Mario 3 in the first Games Contest. Seeing what happens between FFI and FFIV will be interesting.

Grade: A

Prince of Persia: There's suck, and then there's this.

Grade: F-

Super Mario World: LUEshi > 4chan take that! Seriously though, Mario World put up a solid performance here. It beat Final Fantasy cleanly and should win easily next round as well with the FF game split. I probably have it going too far though, but that's okay!

If SFIV beats Persona 4 here, I guess it'd probably be the first game to beat an opponent and never lead it by triple digits.

My e-popularity is soaring at the moment, for whatever the reason!

Crystalis: We knew this game was going to do badly (apparently except for me, I had it pegged at 17% and tranny offered to close his account if that happened so I figured I was probably a tad off! Oh well!), and it didn't disappoint. I feel like I should play it some time. I think I might like it.

Grade: F

Final Fantasy IV: It did exactly what it needed to do to keep itself in good position for the next round. It also distanced itself from Mega Man 3 enough so that it may not need to worry about the FFI/FFIV split costing it the match.

Grade: A

Mega Man 3: For some reason, this performance seems better than what Mega Man 2 put up. Perhaps it was because our expectations were tempered a bit after seeing MM2 bomb or because it put up 41% on a proven commodity (a major Final Fantasy game). Maybe if we'd seen MM2 perform against a game stronger than it was first, we'd feel better about it. Maybe not. These games probably aren't too far apart in strength.

Grade: C

River City Ransom: For the record, I'm still upset Board 8 was unwilling to remove this game in favor of a Ninja Turtles game.

Grade: BARF

Agreed. Would TMNT4 have been acceptable for that division? That would be the best rep by far.

Also, I think it's time for me to try RCR. I've goofed around with it for a hot minute years ago and wasn't impressed, but I'll try it again.....
