~*Say What? Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~

SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them.

X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process.

LFF (Leech Fanbase Factor) - A common issue in four-way polls, where two entrants of the same fanbase leech one another's strength and make each other weaker. This is the main factor currently discussed in stat topics, since four-ways look like they're here to stay. Four-way contests are littered with examples of this, and the earliest we have is a match between Mega Man, KOS-MOS, Diablo and Arthas. Assuming static strength, Diablo takes second place here without a second thought. But because of the four-way poll and presence of Arthas, KOS-MOS snuck into second place as Diablo and Arthas leeched off of one another. SFF still happens now and again, but LFF is just as huge these days.

Last Place Factor - A huge issue in four-way contests where an entrant having no predetermined chance to advance in the poll does far worse than past strength says they should. Not that a lot of these entrants are strong, but some of them do so badly that it makes no sense. See examples like Perfect Dark and the 348 other games that got like 5% in the last games contest.

As for KH2 tomorrow, I'm waiting for KH2 to prove me wrong. In 2006 we saw that KH2 wasn't able to get very far away from Oblivion and was noticably under FF12 (which didn't beat Gears by a whole lot). I know KH impressed the other day, but after seeing GTA and MP bomb as much as they have, it's not as impressive as it had been...and the site was already being more kind to KH by the time KH2 came out, so KH2 didn't have a lot of excuses not to do better then. Gears has had a sequel since then, too (which I understand would have been better-received if not for some server-issues...?), so it's not exactly been irrelevant since then despite Fenix bombing last year.

Meanwhile, we've seen RE4 impress a lot before. We know both its Gamecube and PS2 releases were easily the biggest releases in the drought between the end of 2004 (the sequel-off of GTA:SA, Halo 2, MGS3, MP2:E, and HL2) and a bit into 2006 (KH2), and its Wii-release was another million-seller. We can be certain RE4 is what made RE the new top Capcom series here over Mega Man. RE4 was #14 on the Top 100 List with just the Gamecube release (which was only out for nine months at the time). RE4 was second in the GotC-poll and would have likely done better on FFX if it wasn't for so much Nintendo competition (we've seen Pikachu and Kirby each hurt Leon against Dante). RE5 was one of the most anticipated games on GameFAQs and is still well-received and relevant. If you believe RE4 shouldn't be related to RE1 or RE2, it has every reason to beat some major ass tomorrow.

I figure KH2 will be much closer to Gears than RE4, though all three should do well enough (I expect them all to leave SotC behind, though that was a real cool game and will probably get my vote).

Make it just FFX, TP, and RE4, and RE4 probably comes in third by a good bit. Not to say it gets owned, but I don't think it's up to THAT level.

With all this discussion about how the modern games all suck, it's really too bad we have divisions by era. We could have seen these games fold to older games in match after match- instead we have to wait for OOT and MGS/RBY/FFX/SC/FFVIII or whatever is there to dismantle whatever comes out of 2004-2009.

Maybe so, but make it just FFX and RE4 and I bet RE4 looks even better; Leon looked 3%-4% worse against Dante with Pikachu or Kirby there than when Leon/Dante fought with Riku/Hogger, and RE4 was dealing with two LoZ-games and two big comebacks for other major Nintendo franchises in the GotC-poll.

I get that LoZ:TP should be with RE4 if we see them face off with FFX, and you're likely right. For all intents and purposes tomorrow though, RE4 should take care of business before Link comes into the picture.

While these games are indeed normally weaker then the other entrants, they perform far worse than past strength says they should. A notable example is Prince of Persia getting 7.33% on Super Mario World while the character of the Prince achieved 31.19% on Sonic in 2007. This was extremeley prevalent in the early divisions of the 2009 Games Contest.

Meh, dunno about the PoP-comparison; how many people were expecting it to do anything in its match? We also haven't seen enough BGE-matches to really say if that example actually works or not. I'm having a hard time finding a better example though...maybe Shadow from Auron/Ryu/Bowser/Shadow? I think it was around that time we first brought it up, though with Shadow bombing to Link/Zidane I don't know if that applies to that match anymore.....

No-one was expecting anything, but we sure as hell weren't expectiing sub-4%. For reference, the oracle consensus was 10.50%. Which is a shocking difference which is kind of the point.

Zero did do horribly in that match though. The previous round he got like 47% on Crono and even cut several hundred votes off his lead with the ASV, and then he went and just got fodderized when Link and Vincent entered the picture.
