I originally took Prime 2nd here on the grounds of Paper Mario LFFing it. Funny how things have changed...and yet the KH > MP result still looks likely.

Of course I then put MP > FFX due to 3 PS2 game LFF X_X

I thought Paper Mario was a non-factor before the contest even began, and what we saw (LFF being almost nowhere to be found, along with the successive flops of Yoshi's ISland, Majora's Mask, and Final Fantasy Tactics) only strengthens that.

Paper Mario was never going to do well because of the Mario name. It will look good because Metroid Prime and Vice City are going to look really bad. Maybe I'll look really stupid, but we'll see in 3 and a half hours!

You shouldn't understand it. People are jumping to conclusions based off nothing except their expectations being thwarted. There will be plenty of LFF in later rounds, and probably has been already (although nothing major, because we have yet to see two overlapping powerhouse games against an independent powerhouse). This "no LFF" stuff is just typical stats topic bandwagoning that will be undone later.

I doubt Paper Mario overlaps with Metroid Prime very much though, they're obviously very different games. Any weakness by Prime will probably have little or nothing to do with PM.

Yep, that's why I'm questioning this "no LFF so far" theory. As far as I know, we detect LFF/SFF/splits in this format based on noticeably different performances between rounds. If that's the case, how are we to determine it midway through the first round? We're either using five year old results or our pre-contest expectations, and either or both of those can backfire bigtime.

I just don't want to create the precedent that, if Prime comes in third, we're going to blame Paper Mario and if it does well, we're going to assume it did nothing. it's tough to say too much here.

I don't really see Paper Mario hindering Metroid Prime that much. If it wins, then it was on its own strength, honestly. It's probably too close to Kingdom Hearts to still win if it's being LFF'd.

Honestly, I'm not even sure I'd take Prime over MGS2 by too much, so I don't see it taking first next round unless it surprises me and destroys the poll tomorrow or KH hurts FFX a lot.

Still hoping for FFX > MGS2 next round, but not looking good at this point!

Analysis

Well what do we have here? The three biggest games of 2002 and the sole Nintendo 64 game of the division. At first this was a match of who is the strongest, but eventually this became a match of who will fail the least. Even though the numbers basically mean nothing now just for your information Metroid Prime > Vice City > Kingdom Hearts in the 2002 Game of the Year and using 2004 x-stats Vice City > Kingdom Hearts > Metroid Prime. A lot has changed since 2004, games become forgotten and demographics change. We’re in for an interesting match much unlike today.

As much as I hate to say it doesn’t have a chance Paper Mario is the least likely to advance in this match. In my opinion it would have to rely on two games flopping badly for it to advance. Out of the ten Mario games in this contest this is the only game that won’t advance to the second round and interestingly enough Super Mario Galaxy becomes the only Mario game in this half of the division. Paper Mario’s only job is to keep Metroid Prime in check making this match all the more interesting.

If Paper Mario wasn’t in this poll I would’ve given Metroid Prime first, but since it is it may not even place. After watching Super Metroid struggle with Super Mario Kart I have no faith in the Metroid series when it goes up against a Nintendo game, especially a Mario game. Many people would take Super Metroid over Metroid Prime in a match so seeing it doing that badly is terrible news. Also Half-Life just flopped in its match making Metroid Prime look all the more worse. Of course since 2004 Nintendo has gained more popularity and PC games have done terribly so far (except oddly enough Morrowind) so I’d expect Metroid Prime to defeat Half-Life by more, but that may not be enough to salvage a win.

Kingdom Hearts was the biggest flop in the 2004 contest and with the increase of strength from Sora people believe that Kingdom Hearts is stronger now. What some people seem to forget that Sora’s jump in strength was a mere four months after Kingdom Hearts flopped and really Sora had that strength before, it’s just that he was SFF by Aeris in 2003. Sora’s second jump in strength was in 2006, right after the release of Kingdom Hearts II, just because Sora is stronger than he was in 2004 does not make Kingdom Hearts strong. Sure people who started playing on Kingdom Hearts II may decide to play Kingdom Hearts or even franchise vote it, but the same can be said about Metroid Prime and Vice City. Also with Starcraft flopping worse than I expected things look bad for the game, but we shouldn’t use 2004 stats.

There has been a surge of support for Vice City over the past few days, mostly because of the performances of Starcraft and Half-Life which in turn makes Kingdom Hearts and Metroid Prime look bad. Well Vice City doesn’t need any warning signs in this contest to tell everyone that it will also flop. Since 2003 Grand Theft Auto has been on a downward spiral on this site. Even though its 2004 performance was the most impressive between the three games the last thing Vercetti has done of note was defeat Kefka in 2005. Also Vercetti’s performance in 2007 could spell doom for Vice City though I’m willing to believe that Master Chief was responsible for that performance.

Wow three games with very little to look forward to. I wouldn’t be surprised if the highlight of the match was Paper Mario doing better than expected. Really after reviewing the reasons why each game will fail I’m beginning to think that Paper Mario has a chance though it too has reasons why it won’t place which I won’t get into. I’m going the easy way out a go with my bracket since I believe Metroid Prime will flop more because a Mario game is in the same poll though Vice City or Kingdom Hearts flopping even worse is possible.
