Round 1 - Division 5: Match 3 Final Fantasy VIII Another huge snub from the first contest, can it impress here? Soul Calibur lol crappy fighters Starcraft Best PC game ever Xenogears lol turbofodder Analysis: First of all, Xenogears and Soul Calibur is an interesting little side match to see who gets last here. I think it should be pretty close. That said, the key match for this cluster**** of a division is right here. Whichever game advances here gets a free pass to the division finals, and a likely pass to round 4 if they don't completely suck. Now a lot of people are taking Starcraft's 2004 run at face value and saying that it will easily go deep because it is a top 10 game. I highly doubt that it is nearly as strong as 2004 makes it out to be, and increased votals probably aren't going to help. But then again, the people that supported it in 2004 will likely support it over other games here as well, which is helped somewhat by the fact that the other people will be splitting between 3 other games. Other people are saying Starcraft takes second here and gets knocked out next round because 2004 stats are completely inflated. I have disagree with this line of thinking, because Starcraft doesn't need to be strong at all to get to round 4, barring a surprisingly strong FF8. Final Fantasy 8, like Majora's Mask has a huge range it can fall in. Final Fantasy 8, like Majora's Mask is the next kickass member of each game's series following the most popular games (FF7 and OoT of course). Both are awesome games, but both for some reason don't seem to get as much support from the series fans. And we saw just how badly Majora's Mask did. The one thing FF8 has that MM didn't is the fact that all of the new people that FF7 brought into the series played and enjoyed 8 while Zelda was already mainstream enough. The other interesting part is how close these 2 games are to eachother, because the results from tomorrow can potentially reverse the resutlts in round 2. If Starcraft takes first by a small margin, and Half-Life advances instead of FF9 tomorrow, Starcraft is likely screwed, and vice-versa. The reason I took Starcraft here is simply because of Xenogears. I'd peg Starcraft and FF8 to be close to eachother strength-wise, which means SFF is a key factor in this half of division 5. TuRtLe's Prediction: Starcraft 35%, FF8 30%, Soul Calibur 19%, Xenogears 16% TuRtLe's Bracket: Starcraft > FF8 TuRtLe's Vote: Tough one, but I can't vote against the game that singlehandedly ruined my social life for the first 2 years of highschool. --- Like Darth Maul, the bastard child of Michael Flatley and Hellboy. -trancer1 |

I want to say Soul Cal will do well because these other two aren't that
strong, but SF2 and MK2, not to mention every poll over the last few

I don't think Soulcalibur's gonna be able to still hang on to what
strength it had in the past five years. Remember, it actually didn't
get the nominations to get in -- that was all our doing. Calibur as a

We thought SC's 30% on Metal Gear in the Series Contest was impressive, but then it got easily topped by Fire Emblem. Yeah, I don't think Soul Calibur is the same game that nearly beat Kingdom Hearts in 2004. --- I, like clockwork, have been humiliated by hochiminh Hochiminh is better than me. I think that match was more about KH sucking than Soul Calibur doing
anything impressive.. and then I think Starcraft's "true strength" is
the KH match - 45% on Soul Calibur. --- xyzzy |

I wouldn't be surprised either. Metroid Prime has Paper Mario dragging
it down, and it's probably weaker than it was in 2004- the GC was big
at that time as the current Nintendo console, and it feels like its
been sort of left by the wayside in the past few years. In 2004, VC was
stronger: 46% on SSBM is something beyond MP's ability. The biggest

Kingdom Hearts is something I'm wanting to see. I think KH2 might be
able to give RE4 a run for its money in their match, and I've already
got KH > MP in round 1, but I'm not sure what the consensus is
there. Kingdom Hearts is probably one of the bigger boosts we'll have

Yeah, I'd imagine Kingdom Hearts now blows away Kingdom Hearts 2004. As
for GTA, after seeing Pokemon and Mario Kart, I no longer think the
series contest match is very relevant. GTA strikes me as another case
where the games are stronger than the series (relative to the
