Until that 38% on FF6 is vindicated by FF6 showing itself to actually be strong
rather than having fallen off horribly, I'll continue to consider MMX a

X lost a match the board thought it would win (and handily at that).
MM2 bombed hard, barely cracking 56% on Pac-Man. The series is lucky
MM3 did as expected, or else the series would be the biggest bust of
the contest. X lost because LA was stronger than it was supposed to be. It did great in relation to FF6 which we actually have some idea of where it falls. --- Like Darth Maul, the bastard child of Michael Flatley and Hellboy. -trancer1 |

But yeah, 2 bombed hard, though my order of that list was based on what
we've seen so far in round 1. It's entirely possible that Mega Man 2
and Pac-Man both advance over Tetris, or Sonic 2 manages to get to

I didn't even take the EB upset, and this was back when we didn't think
franchise voting would be worth this much. That should tell you how

I'm not sure I understand the argument for Earthbound winning here. Is
it essentially, "Chrono Trigger sucks up a huge proportion of the
votes, Earthbound voters are basically the Nintendo-fanboy incarnation
of Fallout fanboys, and therefore Earthbound's voters will be less

Hm. I can see the former, but I'm not sure I see the latter. I just looked at the polls, and both games look fairly unimpressive (relative to other Nintendo games for Earthbound, and relative to other Mario games for Yoshi's Island). And that is my point exactly. A Mario game isn't a Mario game simply
because it has Mario in the title. That's not what makes Mario games
popular. What makes them popular is playing as Mario, and loving what a
traditional Mario game has. YI is not even close to anything like SMW, SMW64, or SMB3. Heck, even the list supports this. Why on Earth would it place so far behind those games? In the favorite's poll, it has probably the most independent gameplay of the 2D Mario's.. and it couldn't even beat Super Mario Bros. 2. Again, I could be wrong about this, but I only just recently seen it as a close match since Earthbound isn't really being worth much either, but I do not consider a Mario game popular just because Mario is in the title. Yoshi's Island will impress, and not simply because it has "Mario" in

A Mario game isn't a Mario game simply because it has Mario in the title. To most casual gamers, yes, it is. As long as it's a platform game and not a spin-off or frickin' Mario's Time Machine. But like you said, if YI does terrible enough to lose to EB, I'll eat my words. I still don't understand this Earthbound support. There should be
NOBODY taking this pick. Earthbound has NEVER impressed in any contest,
so why would it start now against a Mario game of all things? Not to

Hang on guys, YI isn't getting close to 60% in Europe. It might not
even beat CT considering that CT will probably double it worldwide.
Chrono Trigger isn't Oregon Trail; even in Crono's darkest hour against
Vincent, he still managed 41% on him, and Vincent is not only far
stronger relative to Crono than YI is to CT, but he's also way way
better at that time period than any Mario game could hope to be. That said, more and more I think Yoshi's Island is going to impress here, because of the Mario name. Its competition is the kind that is probably ideal for the Mario name to shine through- 3 SNES RPGs that the kind of voters who would vote for something just because it has Mario in it haven't heard of. --- Link he come to town to win the Gamefaqs Contests. |
