Match XII: Mortal Kombat II vs. Secret of Mana vs. Shining Force II vs. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Information: Name: Mortal Kombat II Year: 1993 System: Arcade 2004 Performance: Did not enter Name: Secret of Mana Year: 1993 System: SNES 2004 Performance: 20.61% against Chrono Trigger Name: Shining Force II Year: 1994 System: GEN 2004 Performance: Did not enter Name: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Year: 1992 System: GEN 2004 Performance: 80.71% against Shining Force, 29.43% against Super Mario World Analysis It’s the attack of the sequels; both the original Mortal Kombat and Shining Force were in the previous contest, though this time the superior game of the series are out for a rumble. Oddly enough it was Sonic 2 that defeated the original Shining Force. Anyways I can safely say that a Nintendo game is not going to win today. Like Gunstar Heroes Shining Force II picked a terrible four-pack to be in. It’s already bad enough that Genesis games do terribly on GameFAQs, but to give it an opponent that is the only series on the Genesis to have half decent strength is just plain mean. We’ve seen what Sonic 2 has done to the original and while Shining Force II is the stronger game it won’t be doing any better here. Sonic 2 is easily the favourite here. The original was able to defeat Street Fighter II and Sonic 2 is stronger while Mortal Kombat II should be a bit weaker than Street Fighter II and with no Nintendo games in sight the only thing standing in its way is possibility that Secret of Mana was severely SFF by Chrono Trigger in 2004. However even if that is true Secret of Mana would need to have some serious strength to compete with Sonic 2 and that is something that I do not see. Originally Mortal Kombat II missed the bracket, but with a last minute switch with Super Street Fighter II Turbo it’s in a good position to advance. The original Mortal Kombat was stuck facing Final Fantasy VI in round 1, but being stronger than the original and a boost to fighting characters in four-ways gives me the encouragement that Mortal Kombat II will take second. Secret of Mana is a nice upset choice, but it needed to have been SFF by Chrono Trigger back in 2004 for it to advance. While I do believe that Secret of Mana was affected I don’t believe that it will be enough for it to surpass Mortal Kombat II, though it may make a match out of it. Also Secret of Mana is rarely mentioned anymore and is not popular in the emulation department like other SNES games. To end this division of SNES vs. GEN it looks like the score will be 5-1, a bit lopsided considering at the beginning it was 7-6 SNES. In the end the SNES ultimately won the battle back in the early 90s and it is now being reflected here. Probably not, but Mortal Kombat I should be a fair proxy for it. MK-fans aren't that stupid and it's kinda ignorant to think so. How MK1 did in the Top 100 List is not representative of how MK2 would have done if it was in the drop-down box, nor is MK1 against FF3/6 a fair proxy of how MK2 would have done then OR now. --- Prototype Shorthand, do you speak it?! |
