Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~ SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them. X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process. rSFF (Reverse Same Fanbase Factor): An unproven theory that states that an SFF match will feature the expected weaker character receiving more benefit from SFF than the stronger character. For example, all evidence supports Samus being indirectly stronger than Mario, yet Mario blew Samus away during their 2005 match. That's rSFF in action, and the one case we have of the weaker statistical character winning with it. For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. Match X: Donkey Kong Country vs. Doom vs. Streets of Rage II vs. LoZ: A Link to the Past Information: Name: Donkey Kong Country Year: 1994 System: SNES 2004 Performance: Did not enter Name: Doom Year: 1993 System: PC 2004 Performance: 57.04% against Earthbound, 27.28% against Final Fantasy III (VI) Name: Streets of Rage II Year: 1993 System: GEN 2004 Performance: Did not enter Name: LoZ: A Link to the Past Year: 1992 System: SNES 2004 Performance: 91.15% against Gunstar Heroes, 74.00% against Super Metroid, 52.66% against Final Fantasy III (VI), 49.82% against Chrono Trigger Analysis We meet our second member of the super six and like SMB3 this should be another blowout. We also have another SFF game vs. weaker game and another fodder that will probably fail to hit 10%. I can’t wait until we hit the later divisions where the games a closer together and random fodder is rarely seen. If you haven’t guessed Streets of Rage II is the random fodder that I was talking about. It seems like all Genesis games not named Sonic do terrible in this contest, which is a shame since many of these games are pretty fun, but I guess that’s to be expected with a giant majority of older gamers on GameFAQs started off on the NES or SNES. Like Gunstar Heroes today and Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force II in the next two matches expect sub 10%. On the other end we have LoZ: A Link to the Past who’s looking forward for a rematch, though an unfair one against Chrono Trigger. Here LoZ: A Link to the Past is going to do is dominate everyone by breaking 50% and SFF Donkey Kong Country like The Legend of Zelda did to Donkey Kong back in 2004. Looking at the future for this game, unlike other Nintendo titles LoZ: A Link to the Past has no one to worry about that would cause it to fail to take first or second earlier than usual until round 5. As much as I would like a fight for second we are not going to get one. Donkey Kong has a worse rap sheet by being SFF than Samus and Doom isn’t one of those weak games. In a fair match I wouldn’t take Donkey Kong Country to win by much and with Link to the Past in the poll the game has no chance at advancing. It’s quite sad that both Donkey Kong Country games are destining to fall while the original Donkey Kong is in the second round. Doom has gotten a lucky placement in the bracket, not only is it going to come in second here, it is the favourite to take second next round now that Sonic 3 has failed. Doom more or less needs to perform like it did in 2004 to make it to round three which I believe it is capable enough. Since 2004 GameFAQs has become more lenient to FPS and who better to benefit from this than the original, though not first fan favourite FPS itself? Unlike today this match will probably not be interesting and the four games will probably be well spaced out. I guess we needed a breather between today’s match and MMX/LA on Friday. Okay, speaking independently of LttP being in the match, why is it an
assumption that people on this site don't care in general for the
Donkey Kong Country games in? We really don't have any data on those
games themselves. But looking at this match, it seems like most of the
major SNES releases have popularity on this site. DKC was as big as any
other SNES game at the time of its release and has the sales to back it
up. Why is it an automatic given that people on GameFAQs don't care

Donkey Kong Country can do well, but given DK's general poll history

I am possibly the biggest DKC fan on this board, but there's only so
much logic I can find to make DKC seem like it has a chance after Diddy
Kong went ahead and bombed last year. If it was DKC vs. Doom 1vs1, I
could take DKC without too much thought, but Zelda will kill DKC no

Were people really saying this match was stuffing? The vote patterns
WERE very erratic but isn't that just how close SFF matches are? Anyway, good to see Super Metroid coming out on top here. My favorites bracket beats my normal bracket for the first time in the contest. --- So I lost a bet to creativename (yeah...hardly shocking). Like usual, I should've known better! FACT: Halo 3 was 1000% responsible for Master Chief's boost. |

Eh, looking back on it the spikes don't seem all that strange, though
strange. The way SM seemed to win the ASV and then Mario Kart came back
with the second half of it felt very weird, I guess. I do want to see a

To be honest, 57% on Earthbound doesn't seem that impressive to me,
considering what Ness has proven himself to be when he can't rely

That's the thing. I just did a search and DKC's been in exactly three polls. 2 were GBA ports or whatever, and one is a series poll, but not only was the Mario series in the poll with it among others, but it's kind of hard to stand up as a series if you only have 3 games released on one console. Seeing how the series contest went, it seemed like the bigger series got more respect. But yeah, that's it as far as I found for polls. Not exactly a lot of data. I'm really asking because seeing SMK do well today, and seeing Super Metroid, SMRPG, CT, FFIV, FFVI, SMW, SFII, and other SNES releases all be at least decently popular on this site, just wondering why its automatically thought that the DKC games themselves aren't cared about as well. It's not like we're talking Kirby Super Star or another SNES game that never was at the forefront of the spotlight. DKC was huge when it was released, and it seems like the series has its fans even if they don't care for DK or Diddy themselves as characters. It just made me wonder, seeing people back games like MMX while writing off DKC (in general, not talking tomorrow's match). Are people just tying it to the characters' performance on this site? some of it is tied to the character. I don't think that's entirely

here comes a comeback. SM's night vote came a little bit too early..
usually it's the last hour only. I think SM is too far ahead for SMK to
do anything unless there's some crazy 50 vote updates.. which I

DKC has less features than Super Mario Bros 1. Even Miyamoto himself
didn't like it. Probably the first big game where the focus was
