Barry + Jill would have likely doubled (TRIPLED) RE's strength, but it
was still up against black text on a white background. MGS's box art

There's not enough data to make the judgment that picture plays a large factor in games contests You need evidence to support the claim that pic factor doesn't matter in games contests. I think the default assumption should be that games contests and character contests are similar enough to each other that something like this carries over. Or do I need to pull out polls to convince you that SFF and LFF exist in games contests? I could be misremembering, but I don't remember any terribly bad or awesome pics in games contests to test the hypothesis (no, I don't think RE counts). Well, aside from MM2. So we'll see- though I don't think that MM3 will be sufficient proof of it tomorrow if it does do poorly, since I think that MM3 will be considerably weaker than MM2. We should see pretty close to definitive proof with MM2 in round 2, though. |

Are people really that impressed by FF
today? What were everyone's expectations for this match? FF was never
going to be thrown into the high-20s, early 30s while SMW was hanging
out in the mid-40s. That's either underestimating FF or overestimating
Mario based on the past couple of matches. FF is doing well here,
reinforcing what it did in 2004, but I don't know why anyone would
think that was a fluke to begin with. Unless you think FF1 has this big fanbase that just loves it to death, and isn't fueled mostly by franchise votes, I don't see much reason to believe that FFIV would do the same thing today, if not a bit better. --- http://i41.tinypic.com/zk6ct3.gif |

Well, when I was hyping Zelda 1 > SMW/SM64 before the contest, I
heard a lot of people say they did not expect Zelda 1 to be able to
break 40% on Mario 3 again, much less 43%. And presumably they did not
think FF1 had fared any better (more like a good deal worse) over the

Unless you think FF1 has this big fanbase that just loves it to
death, and isn't fueled mostly by franchise votes, I don't see much
reason to believe that FFIV would do the same thing today, if not a bit
better. As odd as it sounds, I think that different games can benefit more or less from franchise voting. FF1 is the platonic form of FF that doesn't really have anything objectionable about it, and can get votes based on the franchise itself, especially if it gets those iconic sprite pictures that symbolize the entire series. Other games in the series, inasmuch as they evoke specific FF memories, may not be as strong. In other words, I don't think FF1 is the series' floor. I'm not saying, nor do I expect, FFIV to do worse than FF1, but I do think that installments that are specifically hated, like FF2 and FF12, could do worse. |

I agree with that - it's fully possible that FF1 beats FF4. it's not like FF4 is actually super loved. but I'd roll the dice with the majority of the fanbase siding with it over FF1. my only gripe is when people look at this and say WOW FF4 IS SO SCREWED when FF4 would be doing the same exact thing. --- xyzzy http://i42.tinypic.com/2vbwhn4.jpg |

Well, after the past few matches we saw it should have been pretty
clear that wasn't going to be the case. These games will still work
that franchise vote like nothing else when put up against old games no
one really cares for. I think the bigger thing for me in this match is

I know damn well that seeing the black mage sprite made me vote FF over SMW today, and that the weird pic made me think twice about voting for MM2 despite the fact that MM2 is on my top 10 games of all time list. This is doubly so for the majority of voters who think for all of two seconds before deciding what to vote for. |

Isn't FFIV one of the more popular FFs? I see it on professional "Best
Games Ever" lists a lot, even if FFVI is more respected than it. Not to
mention the GBA and DS remakes have got to given the game more

FFIV is probably ahead of FF1 and FFXII, but FFVIII and FFIX would be
stronger than it. In FFVIII's case, it's probably well above all four

In any case, the differences aren't that big (at least past FFVII).
Remember that FF is projected to get 43.7% on FFX in 2004 (standard
