Ok, should be fixed now.

Here's an example for the last match, setting SMB=LoZ from last contest, Ninja Gaiden=Duck Hunt, and using Duck Hunt and Galaga's values from last contest.

http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/53?input_values=34.49%0D%0A8.93%0D%0A8.93%0D%0A7.63

Output:

70.334%
10.459%
10.459%
8.747%

So SMB(=LoZ) octuples Galaga in this output, which is the same ratio as what LoZ would've been expected to get 1v1 on Galaga last contest.

Hmmm, Contra made this look a little less humiliating over the night at least. Surprised to see this lead only at 2000 right now.

So I lost a bet to creativename (yeah...hardly shocking). Like usual, I should've known better!
FACT: Halo 3 was 1000% responsible for Master Chief's boost.
consolefreak | Posted 4/10/2009 5:12:09 AM | message detail
The fact that people were not giving up on Duck Hunt yesterday because of its amazing comeback against Duck Hunt back in the day got me thinking. What is the most impressive comeback yet? Would it have been Duck Hunt, if it had won?

Defining the weight of a comeback isn't entirely straight forward. It shouldn't be defined just by the amount of votes, because vote totals have been generally increasing, and in these 4-ways a comeback of as much as 500 votes can be extremely impressive (depending on the piece of the pie the 2 contestants take).

Defining it strictly by percentages is pretty asinine as well. If CATS gets the first vote against Link, but Link ends up winning, Link came back infinitely. Of course you should wait a while for the match to settle, but how long do you wait exactly? You can't really draw a line. Plus, I personally consider a comeback of say, 47-53 after 6 hours with a lead of ~1500 more impressive than a comeback of 43-57 after 30 minutes with a lead of ~400.

So I defined a comeback as the #votes the contestant was down at its peak, divided by the total votes for that match. In 4-ways, you don't take the vote total for the match, but for the 2 relevant contestants.

Example: Master Chief is down 2000 votes against Donkey Kong and ends up winning. The vote total for the match is 100,000. Master Chief's comeback gets a 2000/100,000 = 2% rating.

I only considered comebacks where the contestant who was down actually took over at some point (i.e. not Duck Hunt), and also ended up winning the match (i.e. not Axel - Frog).

Note, also, that I only considered actual comebacks, not vote swings. Hence, impressive percentage swings like Master Chief-Crono or Kefka-Knuckles are not on this list.

Here are the most impressive successful comebacks, from the games contest 2K4 onwards (starting from Goldeneye, as per creativename's poll updates):

1) Sandbag vs Magus: 3.28%
2) Marcus Fenix vs Revolver Ocelot: 2.46%
3) Starcraft vs LoZ: WW: 2.44%
4) Master Chief vs Donkey Kong: 2.07%
5) Vincent Valentine vs Crono (2K7): 1.91%
6) Sonic vs Crono: 1.75%

The next are mostly from the 4-way character battles, involving a lot of semi-anomalies (next is Zelda vs Mudkip with 1.53%).

Now if you were to also consider comebacks were the contestant did come back and took over, but ended up losing (FFT-MGS, Axel-Frog), there are also some very impressive comebacks:

1) Axel vs Frog: 3.75%
2) Master Chief vs Frog: 2.65%
3) Tails vs The Boss: 2.04%

I think it's safe to say that Chrono Trigger has an abysmal day vote.

Also, if Duck hunt had come back and won, it's comeback would have a 3.30% rating, which is the biggest indeed. This is assuming the lead was 3200 at its peak, perhaps it was a tad more still? I don't really know.

Applying this retro-actively on yesterday's match, even the lead of 500 was extremely comfortable; Duck Hunt coming back from this would've been comparably impressive to Vincent coming back from Crono in 2K7, 2 very polarized contestants. If Duck Hunt had come back from as few as 900 votes, it would've outdone its --if successful-- comeback against Donkey Kong.

The only thing you need to make such a prediction beforehand is an estimate of how much votes the 2 contestants will end up getting in total. I think 25,000 was a fair guess yesterday, a guess that could have been made very early on.

Which.. is extremely slim.

At this point I'd say it's the most likely outcome.

Do you realize how big of a leap it is from 70% to 80%

Heck, most characters can't break 80% one-on-one. Why in the world would you expect one game to do it to three? 75% I can see, but 80% would blow my mind.

Sonic 2's result is wrong, we've been over this.

And I'd STILL take Mario RPG to beat it!

Yesterday's chart:

Time | Duck Hunt | Galaga | N. Gaiden | Mario Bros.
EBV | 15.86% | 7.53% | 13.03% | 63.58%
PHV | 13.00% | 6.61% | 13.38% | 67.01%
FNV | 11.52% | 5.65% | 13.63% | 69.20%
BSV | 9.35% | 5.42% | 12.10% | 73.13%
DSV | 10.21% | 6.12% | 11.17% | 71.73%
ASV | 10.17% | 6.73% | 12.38% | 70.71%
SNV | 10.15% | 6.86% | 12.74% | 70.26%

Duck Hunt got the board vote, dropped off pretty big by the end of the Power Hour, and just kept dropping. It was barely averaging 10% for the rest of the day. Galaga had a decent day vote and second night vote, relatively, it seems! Ninja Gaiden did the best during the night, but its during school vote was pretty bad. Mario Bros. owned the morning vote after a bad board vote.

Yesterday's stats:

Super Mario Bros. – 50.00%
Ninja Gaiden – 15.14%
Duck Hunt – 13.07%
Galaga – 8.16%

Contra only got 60% on a Master System RPG.

I mean, who the hell even owns a Master System here.

Metroid would have to be killed really badly by SFF to lose that match up. And Legend of Zelda is already almost beating it by as much as Super Mario 3 did in 2004 >_>

Slowflake was huge back then, in 2003 he perfectly predicted Sephiroth/Raziel giving bith to the oracle contest and in 2004 he was most known for calling a match over which then causes the losing game to catch up (Starcraft/WW among others)

SFII beats Sonic 2 in the stats, Sonic 2 is stronger than Sonic 1, Sonic in general has been in a freefall, and MM2's performance doesn't give me much hope for Sonic's games.

It could happen, but there's really no reason for it.

I'd expect Sonic to get 3rd before I'd take it to get 1st. Sonic's been going downhill for a while, the format hates it, and if "I've heard of it" votes still matter much, those will probably go enmass to Street Fighter due to Street Fighter getting a non-port game that didn't suck since the Dreamcast.

Sonic 2 > SFII would absolutely shock me at this point. There's literally no reason for it to happen.

lol wut? I really hope that isn't a serious post. Sonic 2 has a plethora of reasons to beat SFII, and I'd feel damn good about it happening. 2K4 stats don't mean anything. At all. Try using the 2K3 character stats for the 2K8 contest, then make it a 4-way. You're not going anywhere. Street Fighter should be all means benefit from the format, catering to the fighting game crowd which is a rather unique fanbase. Sonic 2 also lost to SMW in 2K4, there's no doubt that it was SFF'd into the ground, which then lost to CT, which then lost to FF7. That's a chain riddled with SFF. SMRPG which shouldn't have any real strength beat down SF2, and CT beat SMRPG 70-30 while beating SMW 60-40. So really, even if you do want to use stats from 2K4 they really don't point to SFII being the favorite at all over Sonic 2.

Obviously this is just straight up Sonic, but thinking SFII is anywhere near a lock is just dumb as hell.

As for Sonic 2, I don't think I take SMW/Sonic 2 entirely at face value. Would you take Sonic 2 to struggle with Contra or for Mortal Kombat to beat it outright? I'd go for Sonic sucking in this format more than I'd rely on the 2004 stats. It's not like SFII is that far ahead of it anyways. Sonic 1 has a decent chance of edging out SFII, at least sans SMW. It's all over for it the next round though!
