I mean hell, the 2004 Tetris only got 20% on base link afterall.

Don't compare games with characters there is no proof that they are ranked accurately and are random as the games 2004 SFF-adjusted x-stats

Skies of Arcadia (2004g) VS Tetris (2004g)

a) Tetris was SFF by LoZ
b) The entire 128-bit division is overrated especially WW's 4-pack.

Megaman the character is likable, and people like the series as a whole. It's very possible for somone to like a particular Mario Kart game more than any particular Megaman game and still prefer the MM series. It's even possible, though less likely, for someone to like prefer any individual Mario Kart game to any individual Megaman game and still vote for the MM series by weight of numbers.

Pretty much any stats are better than the character to game comparison "stats," which are based on complete guesswork and no data whatsoever, as we've never had any contest matches between characters and games.

I don't get it. How is Mega Man so strong? His series stunk up the joint in the series contest, and MM2 - arguably his strongest game - isn't looking so hot now.

It's not that surprising, really. Mega Man encompasses the whole 'Mega Man' franchise, and he's kind of an 'iconic' character. I always figured Mega Man did well because of what he represented more than any individual game, though this is a pretty shoddy showing for MM2 no matter how you slice it. Dante and Kratos are two more who are likely far more popular than their individual games. We've got a few characters who are like that.

So where does everybody place Mega Man X now?

This match doesn't really affect my thoughts much. It still all depends on how people treat and vote LA. If they treat it like other Zelda handhelds, then MMX should make it out of there. Otherwise, LA has it. Regardless, I have MMX losing to Sonic 2 in the following round.

50% against a bunch of scrubs shouldn't be too hard for any notable game, and given MM2 is one of the few notable games from the era, you'd figure it could do it. Then again, maybe expecting MM games to be worth anything was a bad idea!

WarThaHedgehog | Posted 4/8/2009 10:50:14 AM | message detail
Mega Man X vs. Mega Man is still debatable. That PotD way back when says X > classic, but it was close enough that maybe classic would have won if not for the other options. Neither outdid the other much in the character battle.

Honestly though I'd take X > Mega because it's a lock that X would look miles cooler than Original in the match pic, which based on how MM2's doing (in terms of people apparently not knowing classic MM too well), would probably be worth maybe like 3%. That'd be enough to put X over 50%.

We'll see though, maybe Mega Man X is really where all of Mega Man's strength comes from. <_<

Beg to differ about the characters. We already know Zero crushes Protoman and anyone else from the originals. The only thing we need to see now is MM take on X, and I'll take the cooler looking guy with the most badass letter in the alphabet at the end of his name. Seriously he has an X at the end of his name. It's almost like calling him Mega Man Better.

Pac-Man is only 3% worse on MM2/Pong/OT as it was on Metroid.

...Metroid

Now I really wish Metroid had been in this half of the division. It would probably be killing this fourpack if it were in Pong's place.

(and Mega Man 2 would be in last)

ZFS | Posted 4/8/2009 11:02:01 AM | message detail
Pac-Man is pretty bad strength-wise. You're not going to find many games it could beat in this bracket -- most of them are probably in this division. It got killed by Metroid in the last games contest, and I'd expect Metroid to get thoroughly owned by most games from the SNES and on. That's pretty scrubby!

The problem with this division is that it's all about how well known you are. If you're attached to something iconic, or come from a big series, you're going to do well just based on that alone. If you're not...well, we saw what happened with Punch-Out.

I would probably take X>MM today, but MM>X indirectly (if that even matters)

and if this match were to happen next year again, I would take Punch Out then. It surprised me a little how close Punch Out was to Donkey Kong.

Yesterday's match:

Time D. Kong | Punch-Out!! | S. Invaders | Tetris
EBV | 21.75% | 20.24% | 6.39% | 51.63%
PHV | 19.16% | 19.84% | 7.11% | 53.89%
FNV | 17.64% | 17.70% | 8.28% | 56.38%
BSV | 19.87% | 14.35% | 9.74% | 56.04%
DSV | 19.90% | 18.12% | 8.59% | 53.39%
ASV | 21.18% | 17.92% | 9.14% | 51.76%
SNV | 19.32% | 20.30% | 7.98% | 52.39%

Tetris is a night vote and early morning beast, but its day vote is as bad as ever. Looks like DK won the bracket vote and the ASV. Punch-Out did well at night, but the morning vote really hurt it. Space Invaders is apparently morning and after-school friendly. Who knew?

Yesterday's stats:

Tetris – 50.00%
Donkey Kong – 26.98%
Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! – 24.99%
Space Invaders – 13.90%

On top of the similarities mentioned about Mega Man/Sonic:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=2799

Sonic at least gets the advantage that we KNOW what its biggest games are (though people refuse to get S&K without 3 in!) and there's a chance Sonic 2 was SFF'd in 2004...but yeah, this may not be pretty for either series. If Castlevania 3 gets close to Sonic 1 at all, well, I might start worrying about SMK and SoM.

Same here. Not really sure what Sonic brings to the table over those two games. The last few years (especially 2008) tell me that any "unique" fanbase he has is gone.
