Just thinking, what would happen if Mega Man got a picture of one of
his boxarts (MM1/2/9) for a match against someone like

I really enjoy that they are finding and using the crazy U.S. Box (or
Arcade Cabinet side) design for the early Japanese games. Yeah, they
kind of look horrid compared to the japanese originals, but they
certainly bring about a nostalgia to the whole thing. You see, back in the 80s, even if the game itself barely represented what it was in graphics, or may have had a completely different yet cuter look to it......It was almost a mandatory western marketing thing to make it look all serious or more like actual people dressed up as these heroes. Of course, much to the dismay of the cover art, that was the goal. It worked better for the Western-made games, of course, since there is nothing to compare to. However, you play a game like Space invaders, but you look at the Western cover, and it looks like a full on War of the Worlds with drawings closer to Heavy Metal than the little blocks that represent the creatures. Alien Invaders Plus for the Odyssey 2 was even more extreme. A kid could have nightmares with that cover. A ship that has a big gaping mouth and arm tentacles made of snakes, coming to wipe out humanity. A Space Invaders clone that got its claim to fame because that boss Saucer, at the top, wasn't just a target anymore. | weird to see everyone still rising thanks to OT's
epic collapse. it looks like pong has stopped cutting it for now, but I

So what's everybody's opinion on tomorrow's match? I have no idea what to put on the oracle or spreads here. At the beginning of this contest, I thought a picture of Ryu Hayabusa would save him from this weak pack, now, I'm thinking pics don't really matter and people actually vote... by games. --- *is Dranze* Through fire, justice is served because FastFalcon05 owned my bracket. |

Personally, I don't think Mega Man 2 would be doing any better (at
least significantly) if he had his original recognizable face on there.

thats the whole point of the pic factor. it still says the game or
character name in every situation, but the picture can still hurt or
help. And I think it would be at least low 40s here if it was megaman,

I'll give you pictures mattering for a character. Pictures mattering for a game though just seems stupid. People like characters based on how they look. But I don't think people like games based on their box art --- A refusal of praise is a desire to be praised twice. |

I do not deny that it can happen, but can it happen on a widescale to affect the match significantly? My favorite game is Paper Mario, and if I saw "Paper Mario" in both the voting options and a picture of its japanese box art (I haven't even seen it), I'd vote Paper Mario regardless. --- *is Dranze* Through fire, justice is served because FastFalcon05 owned my bracket. |

Uh, you're going to look at the words when you vote. The only time
picture might matter is in a case where none of the options are really
known to the voter. Which would definitely be rare in a case like this,
especially in 4 ways when you have 4 options. And definitely not in a
poll with famous names like Pac-Man and Megaman, and Pong. --- A refusal of praise is a desire to be praised twice. |

Obviously people who have MM2 as their favorite game are going to recognize the pic as Mega Man and vote. Uh, you're going to look at the words when you vote. Theres a reason unknown game matches get less votals. People just glance over the pic first and if they dont recognize anything, they don't care enough to vote. If the game/character is a favourite of the voter then the picture
doesn't matter. The picture makes an effect to the people who haven't
heard any of the options or when two options are more or less the same
level of likability, but random factors such as poll position (top >
bottom > middle), bracket voting and whoever is losing also play a

You, as a contest regular, will overanalyze the picture. Do you check
in detail of every ad on a site you don't care about, or do you just
glance quickly enough at them to see what it says to see if it
interests you or not then look away? I see the match pic as the same

that there's a contest going on. What the picture has isn't going to

I think any "pictures don't matter" arguments died with Samus/Tifa, and
anybody who still believes that garbage despite all the overwhelming
evidence (Snake performing completely different with a sprite, Lettuce

Picture matters because not everybody is going to say "Holy crap, Frog!
VOTE!" or "GODDAMN do I love Snake's ass, VOTE!". Any voters that don't
feel strongly about either character and don't have their minds made up
before they see the options will base their opinion on the pictures.
Example, Frog/Snake is "Whoa, Chrono Trigger, that's an awesome game!
VOTE!" as opposed to "That unrecognizable blob is Solid Snake, from the
Metal Gear Solid games!". Same reason why Tifa put the fear into Samus. People saw Tifa and were reminded about Final Fantasy 7 while they saw Samus and a lot were confused (I've never played Zero Mission and wouldn't know that was Samus if I didn't see the Brawl trailer). Tifa would have won that match outright if ZSS wasn't in the Brawl trailer. --- Like Darth Maul, the bastard child of Michael Flatley and Hellboy. -trancer1 |
