Question: Why did this happen? Does anyone knowwhy Punch-out lost to The ChokeMaster. Did DK really get stronger is was litlle Mac "over-rated"? Simple, people had a pre-concieved notion that DK was going to choke, so they took a game that most agreed is weaker to win. Think about it, would you take Punchout to beat Duck Hunt? Today is likely an overestimation of Tetris really. Donkey Kong,
because it was freaking Donkey Kong, was able to pull enough votes to
tough it out over the more cult (but with a real fanbase) Punch Out. I

Division 1: Round 1 - Match 2 – Mega Man 2 vs. Pac-Man vs. Pong vs. The Oregon Trail Moltar’s Analysis Mega Man 2 2004 Results: N/A After missing the first Games Contest, Mega Man made sure to not miss this one too. Pac-Man 2004 Results: Lost in Round 1 against Metroid wakka wakka wakka Pong 2004 Results: Won in Round 1 against River City Ransom Lost in Round 2 against Tetris Mitchell Kole: MODIFIED TENNIS! The Oregon Trail 2004 Results: N/A Always, ALWAYS caulk the wagon. Oregon Trail gets last (uh ohz). Yeah it has its fans and “everyone’s played it!!!” but it’s not going to amount to much. Pong may have been interesting here if it didn’t already embarrass itself in 2004 by getting crushed in its match against Tetris (which is wrecking today). If it couldn’t do anything there, no way it does something here with a game just as universally recognized like Pac-Man and something with strength like MM2. So the “match” here is between MM2 and Pac-Man. I like MM2 to win here because we’ve seen Pac-Man not only flop against big franchises, but even Metroid was able to demolish it. While it’s true there isn’t much information on the strength of the individual Mega Man games (seriously is there even a poll with the individual MM games?), Mega Man is still an iconic Nintendo franchise. Hell, the character is still a Noble Nine character on this site. Therefore I think it won’t have much of a problem taking out Pac and the others. Moltar’s Bracket Says: MM2 > Pac-Man Moltar’s Prediction is: MM2: 51% - Pac-Man: 21% - Pong: 15% - Oregon Trail: 13% Heroic Mario’s Analysis So who else is ready to ditch these old games no one cares about and move on to some real games I know I am. After DK's easy win over Punch-Out, I'm convinced that all of these old games are working entirely on recognition, not which game is really better. When Tetris can put up nearly 55% in a poll, you know it's bad news. The 1972 division is one big battle of apathy, where being the most well-known game means you're the most likely to advance. That means good things for Pac-Man in today's match, too. The fight for second here is a lot like DK/Punch-Out, only Oregon Trail probably isn't any better of a game than Pac-Man. I don't think GameFAQs cares about any of these games, save for maybe MM2. So this comes down to which game is more well-known -- Pac-Man or Oregon Trail -- and that should almost always favor the yellow guy. OT's not exactly an unknown game, though. Almost everyone has played it at some point in their lives, most likely on school computers. But on that same note, they probably don't remember much about it or have any real attachment to it, and it's not exactly 'iconic' like Pac-Man. With Mega Man set to destroy this match harder than Tetris did yesterday, Pac-Man's got everything going for it. The only real advantage OT can say it has going in is the potential for joke voting. Sure, it's not really a "joke game," but it's garnered a similar kind of reputation in recent times. It's certainly closer to being a joke than it is a legitimate game, in any case. I know my whole reason for voting for it is based on 'Theo is well again' ! But yeah, my bracket has Oregon Trail in it, but yesterday's match almost dictates that I go with Pac-Man today. Donkey Kong is a pretty awful game, worse than Pac-Man for sure, and it still managed to take an easy win. You gotta figure that Pac can manage the same thing here. And if it can't...well, I give up trying to figure these old games out if that happens! time to bail out on fording the upset and instead pay the $5 ferry for pointz Mega Man 2 -- 60% Pac-Man -- 17% The Oregon Trail -- 15% Pong -- 8% Bracket: Mega Man 2 > Oregon Trail Favorites: Mega Man 2 > Oregon Trail |
Master Moltar | Posted 4/7/2009 6:19:43 PM | message detail |
Lopen’s Analysis Hey, speaking of apathy! Remember how bad Pong got beat by Tetris way back when? Then, then, remember how bad TETRIS in turn got beat by the Legend of Zelda? Yeah. It's kind of like that. Actually, this says nothing about Pac-Man and The Oregon Trail... I mean, look at how well Pac-Man holds up against, say... Mario, and... Yoshi... and that Ms. Pac-Man vs Mega Man match oh my. Well then. I guess it's up to The Oregon Trail to win this match. Certainly a possibility. Remember that the thief from this game is the original ultimate opportunist, and so the Oregon Trail with him in his employ will pick this four pack clean. That's right, Mega Man, a thief came to your house last night and stole 12142 power pellets, 5314 bolts, and 123536 votes ohhh yeah victory. Terrible jokes involving game references aside... I really do have The Oregon Trail taking second in this one. A long shot to be sure, yeah, but I'd like to think that it's got more going for it than Pong and Pac-Man, the kings of the apathy vote. I mean, come on guys, who doesn't remember playing The Oregon Trail at school? Even in my home state, where there is no economy or educational system to speak of, we had our cacti all wired up and fashioned crude computing instruments from them... and with those instruments, we played The Oregon Trail. I'm not saying it's going to win a spot on the top 100 games of all time list, but it's certainly got nostalgia and possibly the joke vote going going for it, which is more than enough to get by here where the #1 Mega Man game-- a big reason this guy is NN material-- is going to just obliterate the poll. Hey is that (another?) upset? I bet it is! Lopen's prediction: Mega Man 2 – 54.03% The Oregon Trail – 18.55% Pac-Man – 17.12% Pong – 10.30% Transience’s Analysis Whelp, we were wrong on day 1 - who the hell likes Donkey Kong? argh. But I think we're missing the real story -- Tetris put up 54% on some decently well-known titles. You can probably count the characters who got 50% in a match last year on one hand. Tetris looks for real and certainly made a statement about who was going to be taking first in its showdown with Mega Man 2 next round. Now it's up to Mega Man 2 to respond. Tonight's match is five years in the making. How strong are Mega Man games? The most infamous snub from 2004 and The List in 2005 finally gets its chance to shine. Will it bomb? Will it crush these games? MM2 is pretty much a lock for first, but it's all about how it does. I think it'll shine just based on being the only game people care about in 2009. Second place *should* be Pac-Man. Pac has a history of being killed by iconic games, though, and Mega Man 2 should have no problem beating up Pac-Man. Mega Man beat Ms. Pac Man like 92-8 back in 2002 and Pac-Man's been crushed by icons such as Luigi, Mario and Yoshi in recent years. That said, DK probably has the same problem and it just beat a niche game in Punch-Out, so I think Pac-Man will be all right. The question, then, is what to do with the joke that is Oregon Trail. Everyone has played it and it's spawned countless fads across the past 20 years. Its joke potential makes it a pretty independent kinda game - this is a game that could theoretically make a deep run just based on getting the asme 15-20% every round. If Pac-Man sucks it up, OT could ford the river to victory. I want to pick it, but I'm just not dumb enough to put money on a text-based game about snake bites. My other crewmates will take care of that for me! http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3605/3347848199_e5ce1a6377.jpg fording the river? pfft, Pac-Man fords the cherry gets a higher score transience's prediction: Mega Man 2 - 54% Pac-Man - 23% Oregon Trail - 17% Pong - 6% |
Master Moltar | Posted 4/7/2009 6:20:27 PM | message detail |
Leon’s Analysis Mega Man 2: Having no Mega Man game was one of the biggest complaints about the first Games Contest, and this is the one that most are hyping as the most popular of the bunch. I personally think the Mega Man series is one of those where the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. For example, the Mega Man series easily defeated the Mario Kart series, but I honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see Super Mario Kart or Mario Kart 64 beat Mega Man 2. Maybe I’m in the minority here, but that’s how I feel about it. Regardless, Mega Man 2 has a pretty easy match here, even if it’s not very strong. I’d take it to beat Metroid, which pounded Pac-Man into the ground, and at the very least, I feel it could hang in there with Tetris, which owned Pong. Anything less than first place would be a huge disappointment for Mega Man 2, and it should win fairly comfortably. Pac-Man: I never know what to think of Pac-Man. In general, it’s been nothing but disappointing, with the exception of the upset of Revolver Ocelot back in 2005. Virtually everyone knows of Pac-Man, but for once, it’s not the only entrant you can say that about since it has to contend with Pong. I think any of the three games could potentially finish in second place behind Mega Man 2, but Pac-Man’s what I’d consider the “safe” pick. Although again, with Pac-Man’s sketchy history of disappointments, it’s far from a lock. Pong: Ahh, the one that essentially started it all. I feel Pong’s one advantage is in how well-known it is, and that advantage is essentially taken away here. Pac-Man is about as well known, and Mega Man is a Noble Niner, so his games are popular and well known around these parts. Pong beat River City Ransom fairly easily the first time around, but then it got owned by Tetris, a game that rivaled it in recognition. I expect the same thing to happen here. Really, the only way Pong advances is if it brings in the joke votes, which isn’t entirely out of the question. The Oregon Trail: I guess Oregon Trail could be considered a wild card. At the very least, it’s very difficult to tell what it will do. For some reason, I don’t think the elementary school “fad” is quite as widespread as some think, and so I think it’s going to disappoint. And I know characters =/= games and all that, but I can’t help remembering Carmen Sandiego bombing against Zelda in 2006. It may take second place here (or even first if something really wacky happens), but I think the odds are in favor of it bombing. Leonhart’s Vote: Mega Man 2, for everlasting peace! Leonhart’s Prediction: Mega Man 2 – 40.91% Pac-Man – 23.44% Pong – 20.54% The Oregon Trail – 15.11% Ed Bellis’s Analysis This is another match where first place is all but assured, but second place is up in the air. Mega Man 2. Here’s the first place contender right here. ROCKUMANO TWO was snubbed from the first games contest, presumably because the series’ fans couldn’t decide on a single game to push through. Now we have what are probably the three strongest Mega Man games in the contest – 2, 3, and X. I’m actually banking that X will be the strongest of the three, but 2 won’t be any slouch. Not that it’ll need to be here when its competition is… Pac-Man. The “smart money” is on Pac-Man to get second here for most of the reasons people are backing other games in this first division: universal appeal, recognizability, and the fact that the other games are just that weak. Pac-Man had an unspectacular run in the first games contest, losing in a doubling to the original Metroid, of all things. One can assume that Pac-Man’s success as a character would be roughly equal to his game’s success, since… that’s all he really has. Still, the recent resurgence of Pac-Man on Xbox Live Arcade might give the game a needed boost. Not that it’ll need it against… |
Master Moltar | Posted 4/7/2009 6:20:51 PM | message detail |
Pong. Everybody knows Pong, but those who are saying the game
might have some sort of “hidden strength” are probably wrong. While
Pong did win a match in the first games contest (which led to the most
LEGENDARY MATCH PIC OF ALL TIME), it still lost in a tripling to
Tetris… which lost in a tripling to Zelda 1. Pong suffers from Space
Invaders syndrome, in that everybody knows it but few people care about
it. Expect it to get last. The true competition is… The Oregon Trail. My wacky ED BELLIS PATENTED UPSET this contest lies in this little educational game to ride the SFFmobile to the Sweet 16 – and it all starts here. Oregon Trail has all the makings of an L-Block: it’s recognizable, it’s a clear alternative to the others, and it’s actually funny. I’m probably deluding myself here, but won’t I look like a genius if I’m actually right? >_> While Mega Man 2 slaughters everything else, expect little Oregon Trail to pull off a second-place finish and infect the others with dysentery. Prediction: why has no one made a Pong-Man mashup of the two games yet Mega Man 2 with 46.91% Pac-Man with 17.33% Pong with 15.59% The Oregon Trail with 20.17% Guest’s Analysis - BlAcK TuRtLe Mega Man 2 Best game ever Pac-Man Can Pac-Man recover from it's destruction at the hands of Metroid? Pong Can Pong recover from it's destruction at the hands of Tetris? Oregon Trail Will the classic PC game be able to "ford the river" that is this contest? Or will it die of dysentary? Analysis: Another blowout with a potentially debatable second place finish. The only thing this match will do is help set up the mildly debatable Tetris/Mega Man 2 match. That said, wow, look at this fourpack. If it wasn't for SMB3's match coming up, I'd say this would be the biggest blowout of the contest. We have Mega Man 2, which unproven as it is, should be able to have some impact on this division. Mega Man the series performed well in 2006 and Mega Man himself is an elite character. There have been some doubts raised about how strong Mega Man 2 will really be, but I find it hard to believe that the fan-favourite of such a popular series would lose to Tetris. But, that's a debate for 30 days from now. MM2 has basically a bye to the second round in this match. Once again, the real debate is who will be the (distant) second place finisher. We all saw just how worthless Pong is by getting tripled by a Tetris that got tripled by the original Zelda so we can rule it out. Oregon Trail has gotten some support on the board, claiming "Everyone has played it!" despite the fact that most kids under 20 have probably never heard of it. That leaves Pac-Man which, while not impressive in 2004 can at least blame it's low ranking on SMB3/Metroid SFF. The only argument I've seen against Pac-Man here is how badly Mega Man beat Ms. Pac-Man in 2002, but I'm sure if Pong Paddle and Oregon Trail Wagon were in that match Ms. Pac would have still advanced. As for trends, expect Mega Man to start this match well over 70% and slow down from there, likely picking up again with the ASV through to the end of the match. Pac-Man will do best during the ASV and early mornings. Oregon Trail will be lucky to be making 5% updates when the ASV hits as it is easily the most obscure game in the bracket with regards to people under 20 years old. TuRtLe's Prediction: Mega Man 2 63%, Pac-Man 20%, Pong 10%, Oregon Trail 7% TuRtLe's Bracket: Mega Man 2 > Pac-Man TuRtLe's Vote: Mega Man 2 Crew Conensus: MM2 > Pac-Man is the Conensus. Match II: Mega Man 2 vs. Pac-Man vs. Pong vs. The Oregon Trail Information Name: Mega Man 2 Year: 1988 System: NES 2004 Performance: Did not enter Name: Pac-Man Year: 1980 System: Arcade 2004 Performance: 31.49% against Metroid Name: Pong Year: 1972 System: Arcade 2004 Performance: 68.01% against River City Ransom, 26.53% against Tetris Name: The Oregon Trail Year: 1985 System: Apple II 2004 Performance: Did not enter Analysis: Continuing with the division of obvious first placers and debatable second placers we have a game that is considered to have been the biggest snub from the 8-bit division, two of the most popular arcade games ever and a computer game that was played by many older people back in elementary school. Already we’ve had an upset, could we go two for two? Mega Man 2 may have missed the first contest, but that doesn’t mean it’s weak. Due to the flaw nomination system where only one game per system could be nominated the Mega Man fans were split on who to nominate so the end result was no Mega Man games made it to the first contest. Anyway Mega Man 2 shouldn’t have much of a problem taking first, it is considered to be one of the strongest Mega Man games and looking at the competition you don’t really need that much strength to take first. Despite winning a match in the last contest Pong is set to take last place. Like Tetris is doing to Space Invaders right now the same will happen to Pong against Pac-Man. It won’t be as bad as what Tetris is doing now since the two games are closer on the old school food chain, but the damage will be done and any hopes for Pong advancing will be gone. The real match begins between Pac-Man and Oregon Trail. If this was one on one Pac-Man would easily win that match-up based on name value alone, however with four-ways there are a few factors that need to be looked at. First Pac-Man can potentially be hurt by Mega Man 2 being in the poll. I don’t see Mega Man 2 being iconic like Tetris or Super Mario Bros. but if Metroid was able to crush Pac-Man I don’t see a reason why Mega Man 2 wouldn’t do the same and if that is not the case then maybe Pac-Man is just weak which doesn’t bode well for it either. Second Pong will steal a lot of apathy votes that would have gone Pac-Man’s way further weakening it. As for The Oregon Trail it has the advantage of being the oddball in this match. The game was popular back when it was released, but to the younger crowd of GameFAQs I wouldn’t be surprised if the game was relatively unknown, especially compare to a game such as Pac-Man which is known by all gamers. However since Pac-Man is one of the kings of apathy votes with Pong and a lesser extent Mega Man 2 being in the match there may not be enough apathy votes to put it ahead of The Oregon Trail. This is probably the best scenario for The Oregon Trail to win, but even then I am hesitant of putting it ahead of Pac-Man. Like many games in this division had this contest occurred in 1990 or a gaming site with an older population The Oregon Trail may have had some strength, but being unknown to the younger population will be its downfall. Pac-Man does have a lot of baggage to carry and an upset isn’t out of the picture, but I have to throw my support to Pac-Man. charmander6000’s Bracket: Mega Man 2 > Pac-Man charmander6000’s Prediction: Mega Man 2 – 50.36%, Pac-Man – 21.42%, The Oregon Trail – 16.47%, Pong – 11.75% --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls BGE2 - Today's Match: Tetris > Punch-Out!! Oh, and you analyst people kinda forget to account
for the fact that there's like 5 people outside the US (and maybe
Canada, hell if I know) who has even HEARD of Oregon Trail, and only
one of them has actually played it. And that was in his sleep. Non-Americans vote too. --- My nick's Adamant. I have a "no 1" that looks stupid. Would've changed it if I could without losing karma. So it's Adamant, not Adamanto or Adamantno. |
