I don't know about the others, but Duck Hunt being much much more
popular in North America than elsewhere would explain that one. We'll
get to see it in action again soon enough. In all fairness, I've never liked lumping that match in with the others I find suspicious. Donkey Kong the character has dropped off like that in matches as well, but it just fits the pattern of the others too well. --- FastFalcon owned me in the Guru Contest! |

Match I: Donkey Kong vs. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! vs. Space Invaders vs. Tetris Information Name: Donkey Kong Year: 1981 System: Arcade 2004 Performance: 50.07% against Duck Hunt, 12.96% against The Legend of Zelda Name: Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! Year: 1986 System: NES 2004 Performance: Did not enter Name: Space Invaders Year: 1979 System: Arcade 2004 Performance: Did not enter Name: Tetris Year: 1986 System: Gameboy, NES 2004 Performance: 78.25% against Galaga, 73.47% against Pong, 25.43% against The Legend of Zelda Analysis: Welcome to the Best Game Ever 2, we’ve been waiting for this contest since 2004 and here it is. Sure it’s not one vs. one and we still have generations, but we’ve been waiting for this for five years and we shouldn’t let little things like that get in the way of one of the most unpredictable contest we’ve ever had. For our first division we return to a much simpler time, a time where innovation was easy to produce and a time where arcades were king until the NES was released. Tetris should have no problem winning this match. In 2004 it was able to use its name value to crush opponents such as Galaga and Pong, though like Pac-Man and Pong if another game with a higher name value comes along Tetris itself will be crushed as evidence from its match against LoZ. Since this is four-ways name value will mean a lot less, also franchise voting which was so prevalent in the 8-bit division in 2004 will also be a lot weaker with more options open up to the voter. In Tetris defence despite more opponents it still has the strongest name value and since 2004 L-Block was able to win a contest and do well in the last contest so who knows maybe Tetris will have another L-Block-like run. We won’t know Tetris’ capabilities until next round though a nice showing here will probably produce some discussion. On the other end of the spectrum Space Invaders will most likely come in last. Space Invaders is another game that will rely on name recognition and since Tetris is already in this match SI will probably go down the same route as Galaga did in 2004. In contrast both DK and PO have their own, though small group of fans that will vote for them in the face of competition. Had the contest combined generations Space Invaders may have shown its true strength, not that it would be super strong or anything though we shouldn’t dwell in the past. The real match is between Donkey Kong and Punch-Out and while the match was 50/50 at the beginning of the bracket making process Punch-Out was able to take a lead by the end. Donkey Kong will always be remembered for almost blowing a 3300 vote lead against Duck Hunt. Duck Hunt was literally gaining at just enough votes per update to defeat DK by midnight (3am EST) though DK was able to mysteriously win a few updates preventing an embarrassing loss. This time I see DK as the underdog going into this match. While DK has been released on the virtual console Super Punch-Out!! was just released two weeks ago and the original is coming out next month. By the end of the era this division was based on PO was the more popular game. |
charmander6000 | Posted 4/6/2009 8:13:06 PM | message detail |
Fast forward to just a few years ago PO was a
forgotten series while DK still had name recognition for the impact it
did on gaming and by 2004 I wouldn’t have been surprised if DK had no
problem winning against PO. Now with the release of the Wii and the
virtual console PO has finally been able to expose itself on newer
generations. Also while DK’s VC release came and went there was a lot
of hype for PO’s. Of course that may have been from fans from the
series and would have already voted for PO anyways. Still a welcoming
response for PO is surely to get new people into the game. First match of the contest and it’s already looking to be interesting. Tetris has first place locked up while PO and DK will fight for second. I’m giving the nod to PO, but I won’t be surprised if it chokes and loses to DK. This will also be the first time testing if the VC gives games any new strength or just give old fans a chance to replay some of their old favourites. Remember don’t make a decision of the effectiveness of the VC in only one match. charmander6000’s Bracket: Tetris > Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! charmander6000’s Prediction: Tetris – 43.37%, Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! – 24.62%, Donkey Kong – 20.83%, Space Invaders – 11.18% --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Submit BOP here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=48529509 |

Round 1- Division 1: Match 1 Donkey Kong Ah Donkey Kong, you and your hilarious choke jobs. Oh wait, this is a game contest. Ah Donkey Kong, you and your hilarious choke jobs. Donkey Kong's 2004 performance was hilariously weak but it got lucky with placement and drew a relatively weak group. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out It's style is impetuous, it's defense is inpregnable. Oh wait, Little Mac, right. lol fodder Space Invaders "Drop down, increase speed, reverse direction" Tetris Can Tetris pick up the torch where L-Block left off? Analysis Boooooooooooooooooooring There's some debate between Punch-Out and Donkey Kong for second, but Donkey Kong went even with Duck Hunt, and I can't see Punch-Out beating Duck Hunt. This match, like so many others is a crapshoot. There's so little stats with regards to the games that it's hard to get a good feel in a lot of cases. I feel fairly confident in Donkey Kong though. Little Mac did craptastic enough in the 2007 Character Battle that it's obvious Punch-Out doesn't have a strong core audience. As for Space Invaders, as much as I love that game, it is a bit out of it's league here, and Tetris' spanking of Galaga in 2004 means I won't go anywhere near that pick. Stay tuned for tomorrow where we get to see Mega Man's game contest debut (now with 75% more turbofodder!). TuRtLe's Prediction: Tetris 39%, Donkey Kong 25%, Punch-Out 21%, Space Invaders 15% TuRtLe's Bracket: Tetris > Donkey Kong TuRtLe's Vote: Space Invaders --- Like Darth Maul, the bastard child of Michael Flatley and Hellboy. -trancer1 |
