SFF is fanbase overlap, whether it results in a 90-10 beating or a 51-49 match. Fair enough. There is always SFF. I should have said, it wasn't noticeable in this match. Low votals are a product of SFF. Votals are lower in inter-company matches, because the characters themselves get lower in popularity, and lower tier matches get less votes. This exists in 1 vs. 1, but it was obviously never discovered nor relevant at the time. --- FastFalcon owned me in the Guru Contest! |

Votals are lower in inter-company matches, because the characters
themselves get lower in popularity, and lower tier matches get less
votes. This exists in 1 vs. 1, but it was obviously never discovered
nor relevant at the time. I think you mean intra-company, and I distinctly remember there being votal discussion after Bowser/Kirby. Whether that was the first match that it was noticed in I do not know, but it was the first one as long as I've been here, and it was a pretty extreme example. I was thinking about MGS2, and I was wondering how hated is it really? As impressive as MGS2 was in 2004 despite that being MGS's worse year, I'd consider it taking it over Prime, but Raiden just holds me back for some reason. FFX / MGS2 / KH / Vice City One thing they all have in common is being PS2 games. And dropping KH out of the picture of advancing because of FFX, Vice City has a decent shot at taking MGS2 out since it was more well recieved in the whole pecking order of games: FFX > KH > Vice City > MGS2. It's the FFVIII of the Metal Gear series. It's loved by some, but
equally disliked by another group of people. In both cases, the hate
has gone down over the years, but it's still gonna be there. I think
it's stronger than Prime normally (though not by a whole lot), but if
you're thinking about the round 2 match, it's probably not the safe

You know what, I think I'll go ahead and calculate match results for
Africa. It's definitely doable, with the following setup I have here: http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/7784/africantrends.png I only did the final match though. I'll get the others later. I think it might be worth a shot to send in a suggestion to SB to have Africa added as a region option, even though he's probably not going to bother adding it. Since Africa only contributes on average about 127 votes per match (for the last contest only). After doing a Google search, I found out there is internet in some parts of Antarctica. So, I've made up an argument for Super Mario RPG (despite the fact that I have RE2), I just want to know what you guys think: The last time we saw Super Mario RPG was when it blew out Street Fighter II. The last time we saw Street Fighter (series contest) was when it had a close match with a RE4 boosted Resident Evil. I'm pretty sure all of us can agree that the Street Fighter fans heavily overlap and that it runs mostly off of Street Fighter II. So if Super Mario RPG easily beat that.. then is it possibly underrated? More evidence to possibly support this is the 2004 rankings, as old as they are. Soul Calibur is obviously overrated, and Soul Calibur II is pretty big, but how much bandwagoning can StarCraft get to pull Soul Calibur that far above Street Fighter II? Looking at various SC GotY polls and the series contest, SFII should have had no problem beating SC even if SCII was big, so the only explanation is that SC is not only overrated, but SFII is possibly underrated... due to SFF somewhere. Super Mario RPG/CT, most likely (or if you really think CT/FF7 had much.. but that's another possibility I want to throw out there but can't discount much about). Geno is the only counter argument to this as he couldn't even beat a Street Fighter character. How the heck would Super Mario RPG be so strong and so weak in characters? Super Mario RPG scored high on the list despite fighting off other Mario games and Square games, so maybe the fanbase can live up to a platformer and a first-person shooter. But Geno is still weak, so that would only point to one thing: Super Mario franchise votes. --- *is Dranze* Through fire, justice is served because FastFalcon05 owned my bracket. |

Same reason FF6 is so strong and its characters are weak I don't get it. The only new likable characters are Geno and Mallow. I'm pretty sure they're weak because the game gets Super Mario votes more than anything. There's just no excuse. 12,000 votes isn't some mega blowout. I'd take Ryu over any Resident Evil character, too. The thing is, Geno is a non main character of an old RPG. I don't see
ANY games outside of the big boys like FF7, FFX and Chrono Trigger

Yeah, you have a point. For some reason, non-main characters from
Square games of the past tend to do considerably worse than what you'd
expect. Cecil, Kainwind or whoever (he actually looked better than
Cecil >_>;;;), Geno, and even Kefka has his ways of choking.
Though, FF6 has a huge cast anyway. I guess this could either be some strange syndrome of past games being forgotten with characters, or some super franchise voting. Franchise votes are going to be a lot weaker this contest than it was in 2004. and yeah, I forgot this since 2004 had some low ass votals. --- *is Dranze* Through fire, justice is served because FastFalcon05 owned my bracket. |

Actually.. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=1610 Didn't the poll only move after this match? In that case, franchise voting was still a force 1vs1. Though it will be weakened by there being more choice of games. And I don't think Street Fighter is being underestimated; it's just had
some noticeable bad performances in multi-game polls and is against
good competition this contest. The only reason I have SF2 beating Sonic
1 is because Sonic performs like complete crap in this format. That and
people don't like the original Sonic that much. Sonic 2 and 3 is where

Street Fighter is mediocre until proven otherwise. Even many of Ryu's
seemingly "impressive" feats have been revealed to be much less so in
the light of new information. Nearly losing to an Auron being SFFed by Cloud, after we saw what Sephiroth did to him? Based on Auron's losses in 2007 and 2008, you could easily conclude that Kratos is beating Ryu comfortably now. RE/SF is its most impressive match, and it still lost that with perhaps the biggest picture advantage of all time.
