Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~ SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them. X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process. rSFF (Reverse Same Fanbase Factor): An unproven theory that states that an SFF match will feature the expected weaker character receiving more benefit from SFF than the stronger character. For example, all evidence supports Samus being indirectly stronger than Mario, yet Mario blew Samus away during their 2005 match. That's rSFF in action, and the one case we have of the weaker statistical character winning with it. For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. Match question: (TP, RE4, MGS4, SMG/SSBB) What is the general consensus on why Brawl couldn't take 1st/2nd here? There is the obvious split, but do RE4 and MGS4 also not have a considerable split? I'm not entirely sure that MGS4 would have a much different fan base from RE4. RE4 was on Gamecube, yes, but it was also on PS2 and sold about twice as many copies. Another thing, I realize Brawl was a let down to some people, but the vast majority of people still really like the game. It seems like it isn't being considered enough. It's hard to not have Brawl doing really well considering how well Melee did a few years back. I realize Brawl =/= Melee, but it seems it's mostly the hardcore elite types that go to smashboards who actually think Brawl is inferior to Melee (no, I'm not inviting a discussion of which game is better). Currently I have MGS4>SSBB, but I wouldn't be surprised if this match went almost any direction. I've seen some of the large multi-way polls, but it seems dangerous to extrapolate too much from those. Secondary question: Majora's Mask > MGS in Round 2? Being a Zelda game, it almost seems to easy to put Majora's Mask first, although I know it's probably a trap to do so. There is some split with Nintendo's Pokemon, but MGS and FFT are both from almost the same time and system, leading me to believe they could split heavily. Pokemon and FFT are also both RPGs of sorts, but that could be a stretch. People act like nobody likes Majora's Mask, yet all I ever see is people praising the game. Could it really be so weak in comparison to OoT? Thoughts? |

| SMRPG > RE2 feels like a given...normally.
However, GE/DKC2 should bother SMRPG to some degree (though I'm with
Ulti that it's not like DKC2 is going to amount to much here) and RE2's
going to stand out. RE2 also gets my benefit of the doubt for RE4's
success in recent years and RE5 just coming out. I'm certain SMRPG is normally stronger than RE2 one-on-one though. --- Prototype Shorthand, do you speak it?! |

Maybe I'm just totally underestimating SMRPG, but... I don't think its anywhere near the strength of RE2. You all act like RE4 will be one of the top games, but you all seem to forget that RE2 is actually the most popular game in the series (From a sales standpoint and from long time fans of the series). You are underestimating it. it was doubled by Chrono Trigger and that
was the year Square was still holding out. Nintendo's gotten bigger and

ROFL citing a poll that has 36000 votes. I mean I agree RE2 can give
SMRPG a run, but that's terri-dumb. Mario RPG scored 26000 by itself

The two themes we absolutely have to use this year are: Title Screens and 4x4 Characters, like the 3rd round of the Series Contest I actually don't like user made pics so much since they get rid of the cool themes rounds used to have. Hopefully if Bacon utilizes user made pics, he'll keep themes as well. Also, am I the only one who has RBY > Perfect Dark? I know it was '04, but Perfect Dark keeping it close against a game that broke 40% on Goldeneye sounds pretty good to me. Majora's Mask is my favorite game of all time, but I have no faith in it being any better than a midcarder. --- FastFalcon owned me in the Guru Contest! |

I've brought this up before, but if we're stuck with 4ways
indefinitely, I'll be really disappointed to hear any significant
opposition toward the idea of opening up the next Character Battle to
all fictional characters. I can't imagine this board opting for another
"traditional" 4way after the initial reaction to this one was so
negative, and SBAllen would look like a hypocrite for not considering
it (there's no way the casual majority he cited to defend 4ways would not want Darth Vader, Batman, and Homer Simpson in their contests). And yes, he can argue against it with GAMEFAQS LOL, but half our normal poll of the days already have nothing to do with gaming. Having non-game characters only would never work as a major tourney on
a video game site. It would only work as some mini-16 or 32 character
thing. And a mini non-game character tourney on a video game site would

Yep. I'm sure the contests would actually be fine, but that'd kill my
interest in them. I don't care, or want, to predict what a bunch of
anime and movie characters are gonna do. Just not my kinda thing, but
