Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~ SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them. X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process. rSFF (Reverse Same Fanbase Factor): An unproven theory that states that an SFF match will feature the expected weaker character receiving more benefit from SFF than the stronger character. For example, all evidence supports Samus being indirectly stronger than Mario, yet Mario blew Samus away during their 2005 match. That's rSFF in action, and the one case we have of the weaker statistical character winning with it. For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. They have everything. |

using The List and the BOP wasn't *that* bad, it looks like. the main problem is not accounting for SFF. here's some deviations (most are pretty bad, but explainable) Mario 1 > Zelda 1 in r2 and 3 Chrono Trigger > Earthbound > Yoshi's Island Pokemon Red > Perfect Dark > Majora's Mask FFX > Kingdom Hearts > Metroid Prime > MGS2 SSBM > Halo > FFX GTA: SA > MGS3 Zelda: TP > GTA: SA > RE4 SMB3 > SMB1 > SMW > Zelda 1 FF7 > OOT > CT/MGS4 for the final --- xyzzy what's up ryan AHHHHHHHHHHHHH |

Yesterday's poll (the GameFacks one) had extremely high vote totals.
137901 votes. That beats out the vote totals for some of the matches

hmm I'm wondering how sure are you guys that Ocarina is going to trash
TP? Is it viable to say that TP has a great chance to stand up to OoT
just like LttP did (according to those old 2003 polls), creating a huge
LFF between the two of them? as you can see, it's very likely that we're gonna see this match in the semi: OoT/TP/FFX [or in an off-chance, one of Blizzard games]/MGS4 or RE4... sounds like a good upset pick to me! which brings us to... the final which will most likely be: FFVII/FFX/MGS4 or RE4/LttP or SMB3, and we've got a surprise winner here! --- ~~> www.board8.wikia.com ~ The source for all your GameFAQs Contests needs. And the main reason for the thinking LTTP is SFF resistant is the
2-d/3-d shift between the games. TP, as a 3-d game will get squashed.
It's the same thing we've seen in FF games. --- That's how I read it. |

Yeah, I wish we have a more recent data to work this on (OoT and TP
have never been in the same poll <_<). It's funny that we never
get these "favorite game in [series]" polls again nowadays while we
have "Got [console]?" polls about 5 times every year >_> Anyway I'm fairly sure that GameFAQs is now becoming 'younger and younger' with a lot more younger kids/casuals/non-contest followers around (and bracket this complicated doesn't help either) which means recency would in fact inflate the strength of these newer games because many voters today would have only played the newer games (and grow up with them) and so they wouldn't appreciate older classics as much as us who grew up with them... I like ngirl's reasoning though, even though it really only applies to LttP/OoT and FFVI/FFVII, which actually may not be even true today as I don't think we have a reliable data to base this on that's not from 5 years ago... --- ~~> www.board8.wikia.com ~ The source for all your GameFAQs Contests needs. I'd think it would carry over to Mario games as well. Other then that I
don't think there are any other series large enough for the shift to
make a difference since Sonic 3d has sucked ass as a whole anyway. --- We'll see I guess. |

It has a chance because it's FF, but that's the only thing it has going for it. I'm just looking at the BOP right now, and I can safely say that I'm extremely disappointed in Board 8's prediction skills. How could anyone predict Tales of Symphonia finishing in second place in it's match with God Of War/San Andreas/Oblivion? --- Good Times, Great Memories |
