As for the Half-Life/Final Fantasy IX match... I'm going with Half-Life and I'm doing it about as confidently as I can be with a debated match in this format. Even if CC gets hammered (it will), HL still really stands out. FFIX will be splitting with the other RPG, and the strongest Zelda game will sap some of its support. All Half-Life needs to do is capitalize. It was already pretty decent in 2004, it's almost certainly stronger now, and it's benefiting from an SFF split, a nice stand-out factor, and a juggernaut mauling the poll percentages. a juggernaut demolishing percentages is why I give Starcraft a good
chance in round 2 and on. it really got the best draw it could have by

SC obviously cruises if Half-Life doesn't make it, but if it does, I
just can't trust it going further. The PC has historically been niche
here, so two PC games sharing a poll will obviously hurt SC's chances
badly, especially when it's a PC game that won't roll over and die like
Roller Coaster Tycoon or another Blizzard game that Starcraft can just
SFF. Half-Life will hold onto its most hardcore fans, and I really
wouldn't be shocked if it challenged Starcraft or even beat it outright

at the same time, I think MGS/FFT/OOT/SC is advantageous to Starcraft
-- two pretty popular PS1 games that have already shown to split 50/50

I think there's a general lack of faith in general for Half-Life on this board. I would take Half-Life to beat FFIX if it was 1 vs. 1. Throw Chrono Cross in and it becomes a no brainer for me. There is no way FFIX is as popular as FFVIII, regardless of who the board decided to rally around this year. Half-Life 2 > FFXII seems like a gimme to me as well. All Half-Life 2 needs to do is perform as well as the original did back in '04, and that's a worst-case scenario. Half-Life 2 could very well be stronger than that, and FFXII probably isn't some paragon of strength itself. --- FastFalcon owned me in the Guru Contest! |

I can't see Half-Life being that strong though. Half-Life 2 yes, but the original Half-Life, not so much. And with OoT there, it's definitely possible for FF9 to win, Chrono Cross or not. Metroid Prime vs. Final Fantasy IX doesn't strike me as a no-brainer at
all, and if Half-Life has gotten noticeably stronger in the past five

Gordon got stronger because of Half-Life 2 not Half-Life. Half-Life 2 I
would take over FFIX without thinking but Half-Life doesn't have any of
the things going for it HL2 does. --- Demyx is better than Axel. |

It's part of the same series. I think it's safe to assume that some
of the people who started with HL2 went back to the original. Plus,
after HL2 and The Orange Box, it could now benefit from a smidgen of
franchise voting, which may actually help it out given that its three

2004 was a pretty awesome year for Samus and a pretty awful year for
Mr. Freeman. I'm inclined to think Half-Life would do the same or

I wouldn't have to think much about a FFIX vs. MP match - give me Final Fantasy every time there. I don't see why FFVIII doesn't have a fighting chance anyway. Well, I'm pretty skeptical of FFVIII to begin with. I think it's more in line with FFIX, strength-wise, than it is with FFVI and FFX - it's also closer to FFIX in those favorite FF polls than it is the others, too. I'm sure it's getting a lot of respect based on Squall, but to me, that's one of the worst indicators of FFVIII's strength, since he's almost entirely KH made. The fact we haven't even seen any other characters from the game makes me wonder, and even if they did make it in, I would expect them to be below all of the FFX crew, and closer to the Kefkas of the world. The big thing for FFVIII is that it's Final Fantasy, which means it's going to be strong regardless. I think it could work some FF magic against Metal Gear and win that (MGS is undoubtedly the stronger game, though), but it has too many obstacles getting there. --- http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3151/hadoukend.gif |

'cause that's what fourways are conducive to. Half-Life has grown bigtime on this site since 2004. Games not on the list get N/A just remember that Tales of Symphonia should be bumped up 30 spots because it wasn't on the drop-down list FFIV did awful in that poll because it's had a bajillion rereleases --- FastFalcon believed in Snake. I didn't. |

better idea -- for games not on The List, use the BOP. it'll still
overrated stuff like GTA to hell and ignore SFF but it could at least
