I still doubt R/B/Y though. One, it's still a handheld game, and
handheld games never exactly lit GotY-polls or the first BGE on fire.
Even if R/B/Y is likely the strongest of them and is in a battle with
three N64-games, that's still a correlation I don't trust much. Then
you've got LoZ:MM; as already pointed out, LoZ BRUTALLY killed Metroid
who barely beat Pokemon. This is further complimented that LoZ:MM
probably isn't much under LoZ:WW and R/B/Y would be doing well to beat
Metroid Prime...and LoZ:WW beat MP in 2004 with ~55%. Lastly, even if
R/B/Y hangs tight with LoZ:MM, LFF may kick into gear and allow Perfect
Dark to sneak past it. PD had a close match with C:SotN, was in
contention for GotY in 2000*, and it would have done a lot better in
the VC-N64 poll if it wasn't for Goldeneye. If R/B/Y and LoZ:MM duke it
out, PD could surprise. R/B/Y just isn't in a very good position. * http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=225 The other games that came out that year that may have beaten PD for GotY were LoZ:MM, CC, and FF9. Unfortunately, there was never a series of GotY-polls held at the end of the year. Oh, and according to that poll...why is D2 in the 2001-2003 division? Is it because of the expansion? --- Prototype Shorthand, do you speak it?! |

I see MM/Pokemon going the same way as Metroid/Pokemon, Pokemon won't
be SFF and actually keep up, but it won't have enough push to get it
over Majora's Mask. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/BGE2%20BOP.xls Submit BOP here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=8&topic=48529509 |

Let's not forget here that the majority of people on this site are
between 18-22, which makes them part of that whole Pokemon Boom. R/B/Y definitely has the nostalgia vote of that group. PD is outdated and isn't as popular as Goldeneye (despite being the better game). MM will SFF it into the ground (similar to SM64/GE last games contest). Despite being a Nintendo game, Pokemon is the only big series to not be featured on consoles (the console games are all spinoffs). It didn't get SFFed by Metroid, and it won't get SFFed by Zelda or any other Nintendo series that is prominently on consoles. --- Good Times, Great Memories |

Onto another subject: I feel bad for asking, but how do you feel about
Pac-Man in MM2's match? Pong shouldn't do Pac any favors, Metroid
doubled Pac in 2004, and this may or may not be relevant: http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=968 I've currently got Oregon Trail in second place thanks to all that plus joke-votes and being very distinct from the rest. Idon't know if I'm the only one or not right now...does Pac have a better shot than I'm giving it? --- Prototype Shorthand, do you speak it?! |

MarioSuperstar | Posted 3/12/2009 10:50:34 AM | message detail |
Oregon Trail has gotten me thinking as well.. but who the heck has
heard of it? It's old as heck and probably, as somebody mentioned the
other day, comparable to Carmen Sandiego. Pac-man has that arcade following even if Pong won't help. Pong wouldn't do well in this format to begin with anyway. If Pac-man can outlive Ness against a Mewtwo, I don't see why he can't outlive... this thing. --- *is Dranze* Through fire, justice is served because FastFalcon05 owned my bracket. |

I wouldn't put much stock into Zelda destroying Metroid with SFF in the
series contest. The LoZ Series is the strongest entity we've ever seen,
and it is very different from individual Zelda games like Majora's
Mask. For example, Wind Waker failed to SFF Metroid Prime to oblivion.
It all depends on how strong RBY is really- my guess is that it is much
stronger relative to its series than any Metroid game is relative to
its- meaning that it would easily beat any Metroid game. Wind Waker
only got 55% on Prime, and Super Metroid is probably stronger, going by
polls of the day. --- Hobbes: What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do? Calvin: If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun. |

Oh, and for the record....we have no idea how strong Xenogears, and by
extension, GSC, was in 2004, and I'm guessing we'll never find out.
Remember that FF1 did break 40% on SMB3 and FFT went even with MGS that
year, so the ceiling is quite high. The game lost to FFVII, so we have
no idea really how much SFF took place there. --- Hobbes: What's the point of attaching a number to everything you do? Calvin: If your numbers go up, it means you're having more fun. |

Nobody knows Wander. Everyone knows Oregon Trail. I've never heard of Oregon Trail. Let's not forget that there's only a niche PC fanbase on here, and even less of a niche that played classic PC games. Before bringing up Carmen Sandiego's good performance, she also had a TV show that was pretty popular that got her some joke votes. GTA has gotten a lot weaker, and even if it's naturally stronger than
Halo 2, MGS3 will leech it into being weaker. SA and Halo 2 are
probably still fairly close, and a leech happening on only one game is
bad news. MGS2 was not strong, and I doubt it's grown much even after the MGS boost. And I refuse to believe MGS3 is *that* much stronger than 2. If WoW benefits at ALL from this format, it could win two matches with ease.
