No caps, please. CB-2004 showed that caps don't prevent SFF-fests, and this format will always have more SFF/LFF than we like. --- Prototype Shorthand, do you speak it?! |

HaRR, I think you're still forgetting Space Invaders in that match. It
most likely will split with DK, and though I'd take DK over Tyson
one-on-one, it being the sole NES game has to mean something. --- *is Dranze* Through fire, justice is served because FastFalcon05 owned my bracket. |

yeah I don't think it's a good idea. it just solves the SFF problems. the real problem with 2004 wasn't the caps, anyway. it was the awful bracket setup. --- xyzzy STREET FIGHTER 4, SON http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvPKGSk13zo |

When checking the bracket a little more,it does somehow feel like we're
missing a lot of games, the upper half is so clearly unbalanced compared
to the lower half that we'll go through cycles waiting for those
matches to end. but what are the main snubs anyway? --- Pearl FC:3953 0978 7217 |

looking at mtches towards the ned my fears of last year are getting realised. ew,Iwas only joking when mentioning the possiblity of 4-way games being SMG/SMW/SM64/SMB3,but now we get LttP stcuk with 3 square games. even worse are the number 2 games which might just get dragged for loads of rounds cos even if they are weaker the generation before or after has a good chance of being weaker. --- Pearl FC:3953 0978 7217 |

Being the sole purely-NES game may help PO a little bit, why not, but
DK and Tetris were also on the NES. If you're an old NES-game that
wasn't from a recognizable series, I don't know how well you're going
to stand against Tetris and Donkey Kong on their turf. Space Invaders
shouldn't mess up anything too bad in that match. --- Prototype Shorthand, do you speak it?! |

I've made some early round 1 predictions right now. Tetris > Space Invaders > Donkey Kong > Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! Mega Man 2 > Pac-Man > Pong > The Oregon Trail Super Mario Bros. > Ninja Gaiden > Duck Hunt > Galaga The Legend of Zelda > Contra > Metroid > Civilization For the Tetris match, I'm hoping that Donkey Kong (the game) will also choke badly like Donkey Kong (the character), which should give Space Invaders second place. Sonic the Hedgehog > Street Fighter II > Castlevania III > Dragon Warrior III Super Mario Bros. 3 > Tecmo Super Bowl > SimCity > Secret of Monkey Island Super Mario World > Final Fantasy > Prince of Persia > Battletoads Mega Man 3 > Final Fantasy II (IV) > Crystalis > River City Ransom In the SMB3 match, it's quite clear that it has first place. From there, it's really anyone's guess as to who finishes in second. No past data exists on the other 3 games in a contest format. Super Metroid > Sonic the Hedgehog 3 > Super Mario Kart > Gunstar Heroes Zelda: A Link to the Past > Donkey Kong Country > Doom > Streets of Rage II Final Fantasy III (VI) > Mega Man X > Zelda: Link's Awakening > Phantasy Star IV Sonic the Hedgehog 2 > Secret of Mana > Shining Force II > S.Street Fighter II Turbo Super Mario RPG > GoldenEye 007 > Resident Evil 2 > Fallout Final Fantasy VII > Star Fox 64 > Mario Kart 64 > Suikoden Super Mario 64 > Kirby Super Star > Castlevania: Symphony > Resident Evil Chrono Trigger > Earthbound > SMW2: Yoshi's Island > Lufia II Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow > Zelda: Majora's Mask > Perfect Dark > Banjo-Kazooie Metal Gear Solid > Final Fantasy Tactics > Pokemon Gold/Silver > Panzer Dragoon Saga Final Fantasy VIII > Starcraft > Super Smash Bros. > Xenogears Zelda: Ocarina of Time > Half-Life > Final Fantasy IX > Chrono Cross Final Fantasy X > Metal Gear Solid 2 > Silent Hill 2 > TES III: Morrowind Metroid Prime > Kingdom Hearts > GTA: Vice City > Paper Mario Halo: Combat Evolved > Star Wars: KOTOR > Diablo II: LoD > Grand Theft Auto III Super Smash Bros. Melee > Zelda: Wind Waker > Disgaea: Hour of Darkness > Golden Sun GTA: San Andreas > God of War > Tales of Symphonia > TES IV: Oblivion Metal Gear Solid 3 > World of Warcraft > Halo 2 > Okami Resident Evil 4 > Kingdom Hearts II > Gears of War > Shadow of the Colossus Zelda: Twilight Princess > Half-Life 2 > Phoenix Wright > Final Fantasy XII Super Smash Bros. Brawl > Grand Theft Auto IV > Persona 4 > The World Ends With You Super Mario Galaxy > Pokemon Diamond/Pearl > Call of Duty 4 > Team Fortress 2 Metal Gear Solid 4 > LittleBigPlanet > Portal > BioShock Fallout 3 > Halo 3 > Left 4 Dead > Mass Effect --- Luster Soldier --- ~Shield Bearer~ | ~Data Analyst~ Popular at school, but still not as cool as FastFalcon05, Guru Champ! |

"1998-2000" division is so bad. I mean what. 2 Pokemon? 2 Zelda? 3 Final Fantasy? geez It was obviously arranged so that FFVII and OoT are in a separate half of the bracket (or at least not in the same division) This will not happen if we don't use these limiting era divisions !! --- ~~> www.board8.wikia.com ~ The source for all your GameFAQs Contests needs. From: HaRRicH | #261 Punch-Out!! first appeared in arcades before the NES. Not that it matters since only like five people actually know that, and it was really a different game whose mechanics more resemble Super Punch-Out!! than the NES one. Last one is just trivia for the brain. Anyway, I like LttP making the finals. I don't care if OoT won't win now, because it wouldn't win anyway, and I'm not even a fan of OoT. I'm just glad LttP will at least enjoy the finals spotlight the way Crono did this year as a reward for thwarting L-Block. --- http://l33trappacat.blogspot.com/ |

charmander6000 Talks About the Bracket v1.0: Introduction Well as everyone has noticed we have a 4-way 128 game bracket seperated into divisions. As angry as everyone is about the format 4-ways really was the only logical way of doing this. Sure I and many others tried to deny it, but deep down we knew that this contest will be 4-ways. If we had one vs one with 128 games it would take us four months just to complete the contest and if we had only 64 games a series cap would have to be in place or this would become boring if your favourite series wasn't GameFAQs' favourite. The generation split caught me off-guard though I do find it interesthing that after the first division every three years only 16 games were nominated in the top 128 what a coincidence. >_> I'm guessing Bacon chosed this format to avoid same series match-up, but ultimately he fails due to some series releasing games within year apart and really he could have achieved the same effect by building the bracket "smart" In a surprisingly twist Bacon has given us the ability to remove a game and add another one. Taking a quick look the only major game missing is DKC2 and maybe a Fire Emblem I don't see the point of this. Before discussing each division I'll give a list of the number of games in each series, things like FFT and Mario sports/RPG are included with the main series. Mario - 10 Final Fantasy - 9 Zelda - 7 Metal Gear - 4 Grand Theft Auto - 4 Metroid - 3 Sonic - 3 Halo - 3 Smash Bros - 3 Pokemon - 3 Resident Evil - 3 Street Fighter - 2 Castlevania - 2 Mega Man - 2 Chrono - 2 Fallout - 2 Kingdom Hearts - 2 The Elder Scrolls - 2 Half- Life - 2 --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/CB7%20BOP.xls Congratulations to FastFalcon for winning the guru contest, you are the best among the best. |

I took my first in-depth look at the bracket late last night, and I
still think this could be fun. As most people have already expressed,
1v1 would have been the ideal scenario, but abolishing eras and
switching some things around could still make for a good contest. Eras

charmander6000 Talks About the Bracket v1.0: 1972-1988 Division The first division brings us back to the start of gaming, the rise of arcades, past the videogame crash ending with Nintendo at its most dominant time. Many classic series started at this time while many more just couldn’t get their foot quite into the door. Donkey Kong Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! Space Invaders Tetris I had to double check to see if Tetris was in the right division, it’s most famous release was in 89 but it had earlier releases. Like in the first contest Tetris is going to rock these old games based on name value before getting crushed itself against another game with even more name value. This pretty much kills any chance Space Invaders had at advancing, though even without Tetris I would be surprised if it avoided last in this group. Donkey Kong went even with Duck Hunt last contest though that may be enough to take on Punch-Out. In future rounds Tetris continues tearing up games with its name value until the division finals while the winner between DK/PO will likely face a loss in round 2. Mega Man 2 Pac-Man Pong The Oregon Trail I also had to check the release date on The Oregon Trail; I guess it is common to forget release dates for games that were made before I was born. It’s nice to see a Mega Man game after both the original and the X series missing out last time. Pong was hit with an unlucky bracket placement and will likely face the same result against Pac-Man as it did against Tetris in the first contest. I’m not too sure what to expect with The Oregon Trail, personally I don’t see it having much strength, but what’s stopping Pac-Man from suffering against Mega Man 2 the same way Pong is going to suffer against Pac-Man. Like Tetris Mega Man 2 has a free ride to the division finals, but it could upset SMB if LoZ decides to SFF it badly. Duck Hunt Galaga Ninja Gaiden Super Mario Bros. Poor Duck Hunt, going against a game it was bundled with means nothing good for its contest future. Super Mario Bros. makes its contest debut after being held back by contest caps though being in generation divisions and having LoZ as its opponent in round 2 means we won’t truly know the extent of its full power. Galaga was crushed in the first contest by Tetris. Ninja Gaiden takes advantage of being relevant and gets an easy second in this match. SMB/LoZ should be interesting to see if there’s any SFF and unless there is I don’t see how SMB will fail to make it out of this division. Civilization Contra Metroid The Legend of Zelda With Super Mario Bros. 3 out of the way there isn’t much stopping The Legend of Zelda from walking through this division, Super Mario Bros. may make things interesting, but ultimately I see LoZ taking that with ease. Like last contest Metroid gets owned by bracket placement. Doing a quick look at the x-stats shows Contra outdid a SFF Metroid though that Metroid was against SMB3. Those two should have an interesting match though I would have preferred if Metroid went up against Mega Man 2 like my games bracket that was organized by eras had (it was made back in 2005). Civilization won’t be much of a threat. In the series contest it was crushed by The Legend of Zelda series and out of the games it’s probably one of the least liked. Like the 8-bit division name recognition is going to be big for some of these games and with this division being the weakest out of the rest it could go a long way. The division final will more or less be LoZ > SMB unless Tetris gets an L-Block-like rally. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/CB7%20BOP.xls Congratulations to FastFalcon for winning the guru contest, you are the best among the best. |
