Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 653

Karma Hunter | Posted 2/28/2009 4:36:30 PM | message detail
The thing is, that's not reflected in the strengths of the characters - Raiden struggled to beat Sam Fisher before his MGS4 debut, and pretty much any other character apart from *maybe* Solidus would be horrible fodder. Meanwhile, no matter what incarnation he's presented in the protagonist of MGS3 is very popular, while The Boss passes the fodder line and Major Ocelot is still arguably the most powerful Ocelot we've ever seen. FF9 is clearly, easily weaker than FF8 - it has a lot of love, but it's got a fair amount of detractors as well and tends to be among the "forgotten" Final Fantasies. MGS is a much smaller series where every main title gets a LOT more comparative attention than FF, and MGS3's sales are hardly a factor when you're talking about a site like this. MGS2 has to win because it's more *liked* than MGS3, and I have a hard time seeing that happen.

I'll go with MGS3 > MGS2, but using Raiden and Big Boss is an awful way to try and justify it and you know it.

I'm waiting for HaRRicH to bust out the list to prove MGS3 > MGS2 and FFVIII > FFIX!

Okay, FFT vs. FFVIII/FFIX: Who you got?

I know I'm kinda late on the debate of 1v1 vs 4ways, but theres just one more thing I gotta say about why I like it better.

1v1, even if its more "Legitimate", lacks both the votals (most important thing to Bacon, and why 4ways is likely staying), and any interest in matches that are blowouts. For example, who really cares about a Link or Cloud match in round one of 1v1? But you can still get excitement for the second place finisher since that character still advances, so theres a reason to keep up with every days match nearly. But in 1v1, theres no point in even checking a round 1 Link or Cloud match since its a given who will win regardless, and theres no other factors to be interested in. Essentially, it makes nearly every match have some sense of enjoyment instead of just a few.

OK. So you convinced me MGS3 > MGS2.

What about MGS3 vs MGS4? MGS4 got good reviews, is pretty much the only game on the PS3, and sold only 0.7 million less than MGS3.

I won't concede that. Big Boss, when he's in his "old" incarnation, is no longer recognizable to voters as a Snake proxy, yet he 70-30'd Raiden into oblivion. For that to have happened, the MGS fanbase had to recognize him as Naked Snake, the protagonist of MGS3, and vote for him accordingly.

Yes, he can still probably beat Raiden even if MGS3 is weaker than MGS2 - but not that badly. There's a huge consensus there among the fanbase, and MGS2 is, to most, synonymous with Raiden. It still has a presence because of the MGS namesake and because people actually did play and like it, but put it up against MGS and MGS3 and it's probably folding. MGS2's hope is that it has a bigger enough playrate overall to be stronger indirectly, and on this site that's hard to envision.

Also, it appears most people here think that MGS should be the strongest in the series. Is there a reason for that? Why would you put it over MGS3 or MGS4?
Karma Hunter | Posted 2/28/2009 4:51:00 PM | message detail
I'm also not really okay with MGS2 performing worse than Vice City against Melee - barely beating FFT is infinitely more impressive than that - but Division 128 was really freaking weird in general.

Wow it's enough to make you really really want to see a new Games Contest well too bad that'll never happen

I've thought for a long time that SSBM overperformed on FFVII....you can explain the top half of the 128 division with Starcraft having variable strength, but I just can't see Vice City being that strong. Not that we'll ever get confirmation on whether this is true or not, as so much has changed in the past 5 years.

The old game contest stats are weird in general - Div128 is crazily bunched together, Div32/64 is riddled with SFF, and some of the Div8 titles are crazy high (thinking LoZ and FF in particular). If you say something like Melee overperformed on FFVII to any significant degree than you end up with stuff like Zelda 1 over FFX.

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy Tactics
The Legend of Zelda
Majora's Mask
Wind Waker
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64

Add FFXII/Galaxy if you're feeling ambitious, but I want to stay away from newer games at the moment.

Yeah, the old games stats were just weird when you look at them. I would expect things to be radically different today for a lot of stuff. We never really got to see old games against new games either.

Final Fantasy VIII
The Legend of Zelda
Super Mario 64
Super Mario World
Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy IX
Majora's Mask
Wind Waker
Final Fantasy

I probably think better of Zelda 1 than anyone else here, and I expect it and FF1 to be much farther apart now than they were in 2004. However, I agree that Zelda 1 wasn't close to FFX in 2004, isn't now, and would have lost to FFVIII, FFT, and maybe FFIX back then. The 2004 stats outside the 32/64 division feel very compressed, yes, especially in division 128.

Final Fantasy Tactics (Hangs even with MGS, don't know how confident I am with it over the Marios, but I think it's more respected and recognized than 8/9)
Super Mario 64 (I think SM64 is more memorable and would get more notice than World)
Super Mario World (SMB3 and SM64 kinda steal its thunder, so I don't really have faith in it)
Final Fantasy VIII (I'm worried I'm underestimating it, but I also feel most of Squall's strength is from KH since we haven't seen Seifer or even Rinoa in the female bracket)
Final Fantasy IX (The general fanbase respects this even less than 8, which is a shame)
The Legend of Zelda (The game itself is better than FF, gameplays holds up better, more memorable, more played, and ****, did better against SMB3 despite being the same fanbase)
Wind Waker (Overshadowed by other Zeldas, people accepted the visual style but that doesn't mean they have to like the game)
Final Fantasy (Name and MM apathy will keep this aloft)
Majora's Mask (Overrated as **** in this topic, originally I had this and WW over the NES games but I realized those could probably still get some votes)

Galaxy crushes FF12 due to random FF12 hate and (now begrudging anti-Nintendo) respect for Galaxy.

Would anyone have taken SMB3 or LttP over CT before CTDS and Nintendo anti-hype? Hell, would anyone do it now?

I'll grant you, FFT did hang even with Metal Gear Solid. But there's the issue that 2004 was Snake's worst year. Would it be able to do the same nowadays, though? I doubt it.

My CT fanboyism would have kept me from actually taking them in a bracket to beat CT if we'd had a contest, but I think LTTP, SMB3, and SSBM were all capable of beating CT from 2006-7 at least, and possibly 2005 and 2008 also (likely, in LTTP's case). There's been a lot of people in this topic who've said they'd take LTTP over CT even now, after CTDS, although I don't agree there.

Yup, that's pretty much the reality of the situation. Is there really anyone left in FA that we could go feasibly go after that would make a decent splash here? I can't think of anyone as of the moment. I agree that something else needs to be done (hopefully getting Q, though I won't get my hopes up). I feel like we need to make some sort of addition outside of the draft, but I honestly don't know where it's going to come from.
