First:
1 Metal Gear Solid 3
8 Final Fantasy IX

4 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
5 Metroid Prime

3 Kingdom Hearts 2
6 Super Smash Bros Brawl

2 Super Mario Galaxy
7 Zelda: Wind Waker

1 Metal Gear Solid 3
5 Metroid Prime

6 Super Smash Bros Brawl
2 Super Mario Galaxy

1 Metal Gear Solid 3
6 Super Smash Bros Brawl

Second:
1 Mario 64
8 Metal Gear Solid 4

4 Super Smash Bros Brawl
5 Final Fantasy 6

3 Resident Evil 4
6 Super Mario World

2 Metal Gear Solid
7 Goldeneye

8 Metal Gear Solid 4
4 Super Smash Bros Brawl

3 Resident Evil 4
2 Metal Gear Solid

4 Super Smash Bros Brawl
2 Metal Gear Solid

I think I'm the only one on this board who thinks MGS4 and Brawl are underestimated juggernauts that are around the level of OoT or FF7. I don't know, maybe it's because this generation overall blows the last two out of the water or something.

Oh yeah, I should nominate Bioshock and Oblivion.

This will be a great contest (if we ever get a damn bracket) simply because of the large volume of unknown, likely strong new games, and several notable snubs from BGE2004. I have no idea what to think on a lot of the matchups posted involving unknown games (and even some rematches)

He will. And the whining will be hilarious.

Shame he didn't do this last year between Brawl's release and Nintendo's decline. It'd be much more gratifying fanboy-wise. Though I guess I can justify that with titles like Fallout 3, Call of Duty 4, and Bioshock doing well against some beloved GameFAQs favorites.

The 1 vs 1 format for character contests is played out, the switch to a 4-way format was a brilliant move on SBAllen's part. However, the games contest needs to be 1 vs 1 because with so many newcomers and games which can potentially grow/decline in strength, it does not suffer from the predictability that a character contest would.

Either way, the bracket needs to come out tomorrow. I will not have access to the Internet for most of the month of March and I want to make a prediction.
LeonhartFour | Posted 2/28/2009 10:03:05 AM | message detail
Considering Bacon is concerned with a legitimate winner for the Games Contest, then he'd better choose a legitimate format.

Yes, you are. We have been over this before. Fun needs to be secondary since we only do this every 5 years apparently, it is much more important finding out what games are more popular, than having a 4 way where the WoW vote stuffers can win.

We have not had a one on one match in 3 years now. How are you tired of them? Yes, the last one we had was ultra predictable, but every time Link and Cloud meet is. That is not a fault of the 1 on 1 format, since Link kills him in 4 ways as well. The worst thing about 4 ways is watching the same winner dominate the same second place for a couple matches in a row.

Well, I stopped paying attention to these contests after 2004 due to it being too boring and predictable in 1 on 1. The 4ways renewed my interest, and thats why I want them to stay.

For characters, yeah. No one cares about video game characters, and the 1 vs 1 format has become stale there. But for the games contest, there very little reliable data anymore, which mean that it will become unpredictable either way.

If it is "legitimate" one on one, then yes. If it is 4 way, watch the vote stuffing commence. I would say OoT and FF VII would be immune, but everyone else including CT and ALttP might be in trouble if that happens

I'm one of the biggest WoW fanboys here, but after seeing some of the previous polls, I don't think even in 4ways that WoW will be too dangerous. Sure, stronger then 1v1, but I don't think it'll be able to beat anything at higher level of competition

1 on 1 is not very predictable, and has shown no trend of movement toward predictableness, even if 4-ways are more so. Observe how the 2005 and 2006 contests were far less predictable than 2004- the incredible success of the x-stats and ultra-predictable summer 2004 contest were a result of CJayC deciding to give us just about every SFF match possible, not the format.

Unpredictability is good, sure, but only while the contest remains interesting from the point of view of predictors. If we just flipped a coin for each match, I'm sure we could far outdo 4-ways in unpredictability, but that wouldn't be a very interesting contest, would it? I would care much more about Crono beating Mario 1v1 than him beating Mario with Link and Samus in the poll....legitimacy is closely tied to fun, for me.

I like the 4-ways and the F3! F3 brought us an epic "brain vs brawl" showdown in Cook, our first unanimous decision over two goats in Fiji, the entertaining non-player outscoring the player with the horrible jury speech, and some random UTR woman nearly winning the game.

From: Meeks54 | #118

It's a GameFAQs contest, dude. The 20 or so people in this topic are the only ones that really give a **** about "legitimacy," whatever the **** that means. It wasn't a 1-1 contest that had a contest so huge that the entire ****ing internet rallied an underdog to victory in a poll that reached nearly 200k votes.

4-ways have proven to be more popular and more integral in bringing in outsiders to the site and clicking on those wonderful ads that keeps GameFAQs afloat, so don't be surprised if your precious Game contest and any future contests continue to be 4-ways or other "bastardized" formats that aren't 1v1.
