Also looking at yesterday's poll, the average GameFAQs family has 2.7 children. That's using 5.5 for the 5+ option. Actually, 1 person voting for the top option is representing their entire family, but someone who has 2 siblings only represents 1/3 of their family, so their votes need to be discounted appropriately to find the true average number of children per family. Taking the total votes and dividing by the discounted total (using 6 siblings as the average for the last option), I get 2.18 as the average number of children per family. |
The n00b Avenger | Posted 2/3/2009 12:37:54 PM | message detail |
My brain doesn't even comprehend that post. Can you phrase it in a way a 6 year old would understand --- A refusal of praise is a desire to be praised twice. |
charmander6000 | Posted 2/3/2009 12:44:54 PM | message detail |
So the person voting doesn't count as being in the family on GameFAQs? --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/CB7%20BOP.xls Congratulations to FastFalcon for winning the guru contest, you are the best among the best. |
Xuxon | Posted 2/3/2009 12:58:47 PM | message detail |
Yeah I knew right after I posted that that wasn't
going to be a good enough explanation. Imagine a population where
nobody has more than 1 sibling and the total population is 200 million.
Half of the people have 1 sibling, the other half have none. So every
single child represents 1 couple that had 1 child, for 100 million
couples that had 1 child. Every pair of siblings represents 1 couple
that had 2 children, for 50 million couples that had 2 children. So in
actuality, there are twice as many single-child families as 2-child
families. Now imagine that exact poll being given to 10000 random people in this population. The results should be near 50/50, even without many actual pairs of siblings voting in the poll, but as just stated, single-child families are twice as common. The average number of children per family is 4/3, but ngirl's method would make it look like 3/2. Then take this idea and just extrapolate it further. You take the sum of the number of votes for option 1 + half the votes of option 2 + a third the votes of option 3, etc, and divide that into the total number of votes to get the average per family. 105590 / (13511 + 20638 + 9539 + 3039 + 943 + 759) = 2.18. |
M_e_g_a_6_4 | Posted 2/3/2009 3:26:52 PM | message detail |
So you're pretty much assuming that for every
person with siblings that voted, all their siblings also voted? I see
that accounting for maybe 1-2% of the voting of each category above no
siblings. I really doubt that a significant portion of GameFAQers who
have siblings also had their siblings vote in the same poll. How many
people do you know on GameFAQs who are siblings of each other? As for the contest, I predict we'll see a surprise upset from future Best Game Ever champion Resident Evil 5. Or hell, Duke Nukem Forever. --- Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 Fallout 3 |

Actually from what I understand that's not what he
was saying. Obviously it's not something that simple, as generally it
would be counteracted by the fact that only one vote per household is
allowed and the odds of a sibling living in a different area and also
browsing GameFAQs probably made up less than 1% of the voters. That's not what he was saying, but I'm still too stupid to understand what he was really trying to say X_X I don't understand the logic, since the given example uses a scenario that reaches a result by starting at a preconceived notion of 'there is X population and the make up is this' or something like that, but that's not the case in a poll like this. I know the guidelines were given for simplicity sake, but it seems to me that without those specific guidelines, that's scenario that wouldn't apply. I don't know, for someone of average intelligence such as myself its hard to explain --- A refusal of praise is a desire to be praised twice. |
