Perhaps it is more independent, but right now we've not really had much
reason to doubt the loyalty behind the PS3-gamers and a solid ~23%
could win the first poll for MGS4. We've seen several times that
PS3-support has compared quite nicely to its ownership-rates, with
today's poll being a nice testament of it. That doesn't mean I think
MGS4 > SSBB in general, but I do think we could see it in the
overall-GotY when there are a lot more options. It's not so much of an issue with Wii-independence -- I do think it'll stand out. It's getting the PS3-support to not flock to their biggest game. I think some pressure is on FO3 to break up that support; if it does, SSBB could run away with it. PS3 folks are indeed pretty independent. Wii folks are actually the
least independent because most people have a Wii + PS3/360 -- they
probably share the most with the other consoles. just check the polls: - 37% own a PS3, 25% voted it system of the year -- 68% of PS3 owners voted for it for system of the year - 56% own a 360, 37% voted it system of the year -- 66% of 360 owners voted for it for system of the year - 62% own a Wii, 16% voted it system of the year -- 26% of Wii owners voted for it for system of the year ouch. --- xyzzy "I hope you are this idiot only in the internet ^__^" -linkhatesganon |

Why would Nintendo care how they're doing on a GameFAQs poll? The Wii
just had a few weeks where it sold close to or over a million units

in a couple of days we're going to see Wii numbers around 3 million

In order to win the final GOTY poll, MGS4 will have to break 33%,
meaning that it would have to get close to 90-100% of its owners voting
for a game, when its ownership rates probably aren't even that high.

Maybe not; based off of early numbers charmander made from the original-GotY, here is what we might see: SSBB - 25.65% MGS4 - 24.27% Gears 2 - 16.62% CT - 11.23% WoW:WotLK - 8.36% CC:FF7 - 7.11% MM9 - 6.75% That is without FO3, without P4, and without considering that CT has struggled with LFF in the DS/port-GotYs. 33% is the number for the final GotY - ie, the number that is
*necessary* to win. I agree that 33% is a tall order in the initial
GotY poll, and infinitely more so if you're talking about MGS4. That being said, using LittleBigPlanet AND Valkyria Chronicles puts MGS4 solidly above SSBB going through No More Heroes. NMH overperformance in the initial Wii poll or not, I wouldn't count on some of the numbers (60%+ on MGS4?) that some had been throwing out for Brawl. --- turnturnturn your brain in turnturnturn your brain in |

I think MGS4 was able to get ~5/7 of the PS3-support in June when it
wasn't a month old against SSBB and GTA4. Now that the hype's moved on,
FO3 embarrassed GTA4, and MGS4 didn't even get a near-unanimous amount
of the votes in the PS3-poll (though LBP [and even VC] did well enough
in their own rights in the original-GotY)...MGS4 won't get 90% of the
PS3-support or close to it. Still, there will be some scary
support...90% is HUGE though. I'm not sure if LoZ:TP did that in

I think MGS4 holds SSBB under like 35% using that comparison... which
would probably be a lot more impressive if we hadn't already seen what

MGS4 holds SSBB under 35%? That would be amazing. I'll be satisfied as
long as it breaks 40% on Brawl- that's enough for me to dismiss Brawl's

Hmm, you're right; either I made a mistake with my arithmetic or Ninty
had a better ASV than I thought when I first made that comparison.
Still, using LBP and VC, MGS4 still does much better than most
(especially you) gave it credit for, getting ~46% and ~48% on Brawl
respectively, and the Sigma comparison still stands... even though who
knows what it means considering Ryu commits seppuku every time he takes

Ryu folded against Dante as well, though most who know both characters
expected that to happen. Those two and Kratos are pretty much in the
same boat as far as action gaming popularity goes. Snake is the oddity
because he barely even shares a system
with Hayabusa, let alone a genre - and yet it's apparently one of the
most severe cases of SFF we've seen in the four-way format. Uhhhhh And please don't make me choose between Magus and Kefka... well, at least Magus succeeded in ONE year, so there's that. --- turnturnturn your brain in turnturnturn your brain in |

How about Ryu Haybusa and Riku? I doubt that Riku could take him
one-on-one, especially considering that he and Roxas COMBINED lost to
Ryu, and for whatever reason, he barely dented Leon with the ASV this

Kefka fails much harder than Magus. Kefka lost to a guy who was soundly beaten by Rydia.
So, Magus lost to a bag of sand last year, but considering what Big
Boss did, Magus doesn't look too god-awful in 2007. Kefka got last
place as the only Square in a match with Duke Nukem. Any time Magus has

Granted, Kefka lost to Marcus Fenix, who in turn lost to Rydia, but
something about Rydia's performance JDLR... Rydia's performance in that

Even though he lost to a Cube this year, Tidus surprised many of us by
beating DK - and shocked most with the utter ease with which he won.
That plus improving on his last percentage against Mega Man, weakened
or not, means he gets a reprieve on that end. Note how no one is suggesting that any of these characters are on the level of DK's failitude. I'm almost convinced he'd be able to blow a match against Kefka at this point... somehow. --- turnturnturn your brain in turnturnturn your brain in |
