GTA has proven you can't bet on it either without being burned.

I agree. After GTA bombed at the hands of Warcraft in the Series Contest, my faith in GTA4 doing anything to challenge Fallout 3 is shaken.

It has proved that PotD success does not mean Summer Contest success, which I pointed out in my original point. And there's very few series' that are more popular in the PotDs then GTA.

Look at the 2007 GotY poll. San Andreas has no excuse for how badly it did there, especially since most of the options were Nintendo.

In all fairness to GTA IV we have two separate polls of it holding up pretty well against a Brawl that looked incredible a couple of days ago.

Haha, it's great to see Mega Man win a GotY for once. It's also great to see a poll that shows Mega Man can have a strong game (though the overall-GotY will be sure to shut that idea down fast). LOVED the demo for Braid though.

* Chrono Trigger - 27.70% on DS poll, 20127 votes (of 72651 total)
* WoW: WotLK - 36.83% on PC poll, 22383 votes (of 60780 total)
* Persona 4 - 44.53% on PS2 poll, 21612 votes (of 48534 total)
* MGS4 - 53.56% on PS3 poll, 39796 votes (of 74297 total)
* Crisis Core - 51.04% on PSP poll, 29476 votes (of 57756 total)
* Brawl - 57.97% on Wii poll, 46045 votes (of 79423 total)

Hmm, kind of tough to comment on that Gears performance. On the one hand it did everything it needed to percentage-wise, including easily stomping on Fable directly and pulling down a pretty good overall % given that the competition was decent. On the other hand... all those options couldn't even manage 70k votes? I realize there was no super-high profile Brawl or MGS or CT to draw in the fans, but I thought the options outside of the top two not being complete junk would be enough to compensate for that... guess not. Unless L4D sneaks in (very unlikely) to hurt its shooter appeal Gears should still be safe for a 4th place finish, but any dreams of it competing with the Multi winner have likely been smashed after that underwhelming show of popularity.

As for today... such a cool poll! I realize MM and SF are probably only doing well thanks to name recognition and that MM9's going to be smashed in the overall, but even so it's great to see really cool little indy titles like Braid and Goo pulling down respectable showings. Hey, even Strong Bad is doing well for himself- GameFAQs must have more attractive people than I thought!

well, it's way above the PS2's vote total and might get to the PC one.

MM9 vs. P4 is probably the battle for last, but maybe it can beat Warcraft or something. who knows.

CC:FF7 shouldn't be in contention for last. MM9 and especially P4 are more in danger. CC:FF7 had a better percentage in a more popular poll than either of them, and it's a spin-off of FF7 with FF7 in the name. Besides that...

yeah, the FFT thing from last year gave me confidence too. though that could be because FFT fans are just stupid fanatical about their game, I dunno. I figure it's more of a general FF thing, something Crisis Core would definitely take advantage of.

still don't believe that Zack performance was all FF7. just makes no sense.

yeah, GTA4 reeks of the same anti-hype that Halo 3 suffered from last year. I'm not expecting a lot there.

I think going with Fallout 3 and COD5 (for lack of a better abbreviation) is more due to me not wanting to pick GTA4 than anything else.

GTA4 is on a downward slide I don't think most people can wrap their heads around yet. It went from beating the heck out of MGS4 to losing to it cleanly in a very short period of time, and MGS4 is (sadly) not a powerhouse of any sort. Anything's possible, but I'd be stunned if it won tomorrow's poll.

GTAIV did BETTER on Brawl in that second poll than in the first one. The aberration in that poll was MGS4, *not* GTAIV. By that logic Brawl is slipping since it's percentage on MGS4 sunk very noticably as well.

I mean, it just stuns me how much it struggles to stay above San Andreas on the FAQ listing. GTA has been a series which always does much better in the FAQs than its actual strength should imply, which bodes poorly given that...

GTAIV could easily win tonight's poll on name recognition and sales alone...but that's really all it has going for it. Fallout 3 is much more well-liked.

And CoD doesn't have a chance. World at War will do fine, but it's simply not popular enough to outright win the poll.

less sales? not by much; it's probably going to be the top-selling game of December, as we'll see when NPD comes out next week. it's the #1 played game on XBox Live -- higher than Gears 2. it may not be COD4, but it's pretty well-liked and COD4 absolutely wrecked stuff last year in these polls.

if you don't have faith in GTA4, COD5 is a good place to turn.

I still don't understand CoD's popularity. It just doesn't seem like the kind of game that would be especially well-liked here, and that makes me wary of it. Still, as good a bet as any considering what it did before.
