24 hours without a stats post? Uh oh, I better heat things up with an extremely dull update!

So a while back I posted the seeding breakdown from the last Contest. But, I went back and compared that against the seedings from '07 and the last few years, and saw that I'd made a few mistakes. I corrected those and then converted the whole bracket so you can see what it would have looked like as a 128 character 1v1- you can check that out if you're interested.

What's this, my work with character seeding failed to ignite stats' curiosity and result in a whirlwind of excitement? Hard to believe! Well I've got some bad news for you, because...

I worked with seeds quite a bit more yesterday. My research on seeding when reconstructing the last two brackets got me to thinking, why don't I have all this info in one place over on lol x-stats? So I entered that data into the db and reworked the Character History pages over the site; now they all look like THIS:

The match pics, x-stats, rank, raw stats, matchup results, seasonal x-stat ranks, and brackets were already in place, but now you can ALSO see everyone's seeding placement for each bracket! This makes it easy to check whether they're trending up or down in recent years, both in terms of overall strength in their matches and also the kind of nomination support they're getting. Also, I cleaned up the Complete Results section some... if you hover over any opponent, like let's say Master Chief in '05 for instance, an info box will pop up to explain that MC finished 23rd that year by scoring a value of right around 31%. For more detail you can click the link, which moves you directly to MC's complete history.

One kind of neat thing I did when entering these was to convert all of the brackets into 1-16 format so that seeding info would remain consistent from year to year. So with the (1-8 seeded) '05 and '06 brackets I determined who were the 4 REAL #1s vs the "1s" who would actually have been 2s, and used that info to find out everyone else's real seed.

Some of the things I found out while compiling these seeds were real eye openers. For instance, did you realize what a nomination stud Dante is?

The guy's never been lower than a 4 seed (we're talking in terms of 1-16 divisions, remember, so that's really impressive), was a legit 2 in '05, and would also have been a legit 2 the past three seasons (if they would have been non-female halved 64 character 1v1s). And yet the dude still can't beat Yoshi! Then you take a true powerhouse who deserves those kind of seeds, like

And he can only manage 64 character mid-carder status each of the past 4 seasons. Crazy!

Anyways, just something to keep an eye out for when you're browsing those characters on the site in prep for this Summer or whatnot.

While I'll agree that Crono was probably stretched or jiggled or whatever a little bit, I don't think the Vincent match was in SB's mind when he did that. L-Block entered the Contest as a #1 after last year's win, but I think Bacon wanted to really challenge him on the road to a second Championship. That's why he perhaps snuck Ryu back a little bit to get him in there as a really strong 8 seed, tossed Meta Knight into the mix in the hopes of BRAWLFEAR, and put a cherry on the top by introducing The Dog as well, who figured to have a chance to ? Block him. Then he continued to challenge him for R2 and on by introducing a way underseeded Crono who was going to have a decent shot of topping him.

That being said, I don't think Crono as a 4 was THAT big a stretch. Frog fell to a 10 in '05, missed the cut in '06, and would barely have made the bracket again in '07 had it been only 64 characters. And Magus slipped all the way to a 7 after his bad outing in '07, meaning he also would barely have made the cut in a normal 1v1 for '08. So yeah, I could see Crono have fallen back to at least a legit 3 on noms this season... hopefully the re-release will help those guys to better seeds next time around.

With all of Dante's nomination-power (especially since he's had it since the first DMC), it makes me think he's due a general site-wide shift of contest power in his favor sometime soon. He's responsible for a respectable new big-selling series last generation and has gone multi-platform this generation. I imagine his series can only grow from here, too, so...surely Dante's due sometime soon if the site starts to take a new direction sometime soon a la 2003...

...then again, this year would have been a great year to see that shift take place for the guy, which didn't pan out so well. Granted, he turned around a big loss to MC...though that was mostly MC's doing. He also let Leon improve on him from last year in R2 and failed to beat Kirby (though Kirby was jacked up in his last two rounds) -- even Sonic in R4 was expected to get more on Kirby than Dante in R3, which isn't so hot now considering how badly Auron beat him. In fact, Auron did better against Sephiroth despite SFF (and another PS2-star in Kratos) than Dante did.

I mean...Dante's due to move up in the tiers, but it hasn't happened yet.

Female has a really good day vote though. IIRC, last time we had the poll, Female climbed up *at least* 1% with the day vote which is pretty good considering how low it's number are.

Agreed about Kratos, though there are two things I think are worth mentioning if we're comparing his future to Dante's:

1) Dante has proven he can survive a bad game (DMC2 boosted him, afterall).
2) Dante can and has gone multi-platform.

Kratos will be doing fine in the future, but he's currently restricted to the PS3/PSP and the GoW series is going to be put in a very crucial position now that nearly every important non-Sony PS3-game is being ported; it's where it's necessary to be great since GoW3 and future installments will sell systems. In fact, it's in a position where it NEEDS to sell systems so Kratos can keep moving up in the ranks; ownership isn't so hot right now. The DMC series will have the PS3 and 360 from here on and -- while the reputation is always important -- it doesn't carry the same kind of baggage and survived a bad game once already.

Kratos's future was looking FANTASTIC until the PS3 bombed. Now, Dante's got more potential I think.

I understand that, but it is weird that the weakest member of the Noble 9 is the best overall seeded. (Of course, all this comes back to the original point I keep harping about 2002, there was no way that Cloud and Link should not have been one seeds, Pac Man and ****ing Lara Croft? Anyone who knew anything about this site knew they would be top tier characters. In other words, Link should have all 1 seeds, as should Cloud.

Understandable, especially when it's coupled with how we argued for a long time that the four-way format hurts Sonic Team since he doesn't have a real hardcore fanbase yet the nomination system is supposed to benefit those with hardcore fanbases more (hello, Phoenix).

Hey hey, some actual seeding discussion was created, what a welcome surprise!

Anyways, getting back to the upcoming bracket... LL did a poll a couple days back on an oft-discussed topic here in stats; thought I'd share the results.

I'm thinking the results would pretty much go along the same lines GameFAQs-wide. 3 was clearly outclassed by the sequels but holds up decently with nostalgia vote, VC is the favorite of plenty of people but has its legs cut out somewhat with the recency of SA, while 4 just flat out wasn't loved as all the others had been and will probably continue tailing off as we get further away from the release date.

Long as I'm here, let's see what other Game Contest-related polls were run in '08.

Pretty wild result, and definitely continues to point in the direction of LL being older and very SNES friendly. 65% playrate for SC- quite impressive! Out of the 3 last gen GTA games, I prefer 3 > SA > VC. VC was disappointing. 3 and SA were both good.

While GTA3 is my favourite Vice City did bring in a lot of things that I'd like 3 to have like diving out of moving cars and buying property.

What, you still think Dante gets doubled by Crono? The guy HAS moved up to the level of near elite. I'll go ahead and tell you that 2002 Dante is lucky to get 40% on Vincent.

yeah, Mario World is skewed on LL. LL is also pretty Pokemon/Starcraft obsessed last I looked, so I wouldn't expect those numbers to hold up.

RBY is a mile ahead of GSC which is a kilometer ahead of DP though.

Ahh, looks like I was right.

But yeah, if you don't think Dante's moved up some since he started, you haven't been paying attention. DMC3 moved Dante up from solid midcarder to near elite, at the very least.

Oh, no question he's moved up. I guess I just think things have looked like he should be even higher by now...but perhaps that's just mere perception problems on my behalf. Still, being outdone on Sephiroth by SFF'd versions of Auron and Tifa aren't particularly encouraging for a near-elite; those two are near-elites.

Perhaps, but he still did worse against Kirby in R3 than Sonic did in R4, too...and Auron beat Sonic very soundly in R2.

Dante over Sonic? I know that everyone is desperate to see Sonic lose to another non noble niner, but there's no way Dante beats him in a one on one.

In terms of near-elites Dante is in the same tier as Yoshi and Luigi, not Auron and Tifa.

What a shame that despite the impressive nomination power that Dante, Kratos, and Sora have displayed in recent years we possibly won't see any of them represented in the upcoming Contest. What I'll do once tranny elects me Contest Admin is to fix brutal nomination splits like KH/KH2, GoW1/2, and DMC1/3/4 by combining noms to let one of those potentially exciting games into the bracket at the expense of trash like ToS.

(Would also do the same if something like MM2 or Sonic 2 was going to miss the bracket, but would have been in with decent seeds if not for MM3/Sonic 3 SFF.)

Dante's 2006-number is off though, thanks to Solid/Yoshi. Also, if he's on Yoshi's/Luigi's tier, I don't like to really call them near-elites...nor do I like to put Kirby ahead of Yoshi/Luigi in any year except maybe this year (pre-rally Kirby, that is) and Dante clearly lost to him.

Well, maybe Dante's still a small step below that, but he still got 46% on Vincent, who was on the doorsteps of the Noble Nine that year.

...Now? I'd consider it. He certainly wouldn't get the 40% or whatever he got in 2004. He'd easily get 45%, maybe closer to 48%. Not that I'd take Dante to win, but that's not really the argument here.

And does anyone take Yoshi to beat Dante NOW? 2006 was the peak of Nintendo power.

I still suspect that either Dante's 2005 value or just the match with Vincent was a fluke.

He's done nothing since than to make me trust that numbers. First he goes out and loses to Yoshi in 2006, when all the Mario characters had dropped back down to their previous levels after 2005*. If this was true there is no way that 2005 Dante comes close to losing to Yoshi. Sure he did well on Ryu H., but as we've seen the latter is susceptible to bad-ass SFF. This also helps explain what happened with Riku that year, since as is my understanding he barely appears in KHII which he is supposed to have gotten a big boost from.

In 2007, he holds up well against the Chief, but he also probably would have been in danger of losing to Luigi if Pikachu hadn't been in the poll. I think that Master Chief was the one that underperformed in that match, personally. His second round match this past year is the only thing that looks 33 on BL worthy, IMO.

*There's no reason to think that Yoshi was at 33 on BL in 2005 anyway. He performed on Laharl exactly as his 2004 self was expected to.
