How many people looked at the picture of Snake against Frog, and said,
"I love Snake, but since his picture is so bad I'm going to vote for
that Frog with a cool sword?" Or who said, "I love Samus, but she's not
in her suit so I'm voting for Tifa?" It matters. And 60-40 isn't considered a rout? And having a character from an unreleased FF as the face of the series is pretty extreme circumstance I'd say. hey they used Naked Snake in Snake's pics in 2004! it wasn't Solid Snake and Snake Eater wasn't out yet anyway! no wonder Snake lost to Mega Man that year! Time to refresh people's memories about the picture since using
extreme, incomparable examples of the picture factor are getting out of
hand. SMB/FF was not Snake/Frog or Samus/Tifa - it was not a case of
one side being unrecognizable or being biased in any meaningful way.
We're talking about the Final Fantasy series. Not a character, not a
game - an entire series. Arguing a picture is hurting FF here is crazy.

As a FF fan, I don't even know who the character in the bluehead gear
behind ashe is. And at that point, FF12 wasn't even out. That is a HUGE

Just imagine FF having Cloud, Squall, and Tidus in the picture instead.
It's potentially the biggest picture disadvantage we've ever seen,

Of course us contest veterans won't let a picture change our mind. But
for a normal gamefaq user, where the point of the picture is to drive
the attention of people... If mario fans see that picture of mario,
it'll draw their attention. FF fans won't be drawn to that picture if

Series are going to be hurt by pics less then games or characters. This
isn't a single game or character; this is an ENTIRE SERIES. It would
take a MASSIVE pic disadvantage for the result to change. --- FastFalcon believed in Snake. I didn't. |

FF got that against Diablo in round 1. I doubt it really performs THAT differently either way. And FF performed the same on MM and RE despite the differences in pics. Eh, people have dismissed pictures having any real effect for years
(and I doubted how much impact they had too), but I'd say it's been
shown pretty conclusively that they do matter. Sure, series would be
less affected by pics than characters, but to say that the difference

Why would Cloud being in the pic mean that FF should have beaten LoZ?
It would only mean that it would have lost worse with Ashe instead. And
FF's round 1 demolition of Diablo was really impressive. In fact,

There are cases where calling out the picture is perfectly valid. This
isn't one of those cases, because there wasn't any disadvantage for
Final Fantasy. It had plenty of other pictures without Cloud in them
and it did perfectly fine. The result wouldn't have changed in any
significant way by sticking Cloud in there instead of Ashe - it wasn't

Or do you actually think that Mario woulda been VERY close to Zelda 1v1? Indirectly, I think Mario IS close to Zelda. Directly, who knows. I doubt Mario gets killed, honestly. This is one instance where "It's MARIO!" actually applies. It's probably the most respected series on this site. Doesn't matter if FFVII and OoT would beat Mario 3 60/40 or worse. Metal Gear. If you want to go further down the line, SSB is projected

I want to rank Super Metroid higher, but I can't see it prevailing over
a well-liked Mario game. And RBY should be a lot stronger relative to

Why in god's name are some people putting Super Metroid at the top? Or
even above SMRPG period? SMRPG was getting sffed to dust by Chrono
Trigger.....Metroid just got flat out obliterated by ALttP, and CT and
ALttP are dead even with one another. THis makes no sense, how can

Super Metroid and Metroid Prime, honestly. I doubt it gets a
significant amount of strength from any other entry in the series. And you really think RBY wins a SFF battle against SMB? Argh, can't get over that utter destruction by LttP! Yeah. I expect this to be the case with most people. Super Metroid given a non-Nintendo route will surprise a lot of people, I think. I don't know that it'd win direct matches against SMB1, but indirectly? I think it'd be the stronger game by a good bit.
