We're getting way more votes nowadays than we were 4-5 years ago,
and just how many of these new voters have started with the 8-bit
Nintendo? Not very many of them, I'd imagine. We just had a poll that actually gave us the play numbers directly, so it's not so much needing speculation. http://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/index.html?poll=3325 Votals are pretty high, higher than some of our contest matches this year, even. NES or earlier has 34%, and you've gotta figure almost everyone who voted SNES era has a decent amount of NES exposure too. Throw in some emulation and remakes, and I don't think the strong games of yore have anything to worry about. --- FastFalcon's quest to defeat Lopen: Round - blagh I am dead. Target: 467+. Memorial Day you say? Ok then- but actually, that only makes Zelda 1
look even better with the day vote, as Mario 3 was over 60% overnight,
and Zelda gained almost 4% on it with the day vote. If 3 couldn't do
it, Mario World and even 64 are very likely not going to be able to
rely on recognizability or being more mainstream to beat a Zelda game-
they need to run up the margins among people who actually played the
games, especially among those who played them long enough ago for
nostalgia to matter. I say especially among those who played them long
enough ago for nostalgia to matter because SMB3 supposedly has a 95%
playrate, but still performed like a NES game as far as trends go- a
lot of that 95% played it well after the NES, I'm sure, and do not see
it as a game that is as special as its NES fanbase sees it. As for Board 8 x-stats: 1. Super Smash Bros Melee 50.00% 2. Chrono Trigger 48.00% 3. Ocarina of Time 47.00% 4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl 46.00% (but beats Melee easily directly) 5. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 45.00% X. Final Fantasy VII NOT LINEAR FFVII breaks 45% against anything other than CT, and loses to stuff like Big Rigs. Remember FFVII was just a couple of votes short of toppling Melee in the NCAA Games Finals! So, is it just me, or does anybody else kinda dislike that we will
likely get to predict the contest and several of the biggest newcomers
after the GotY-polls go? SSBB/MGS4/GTA4 will still have us debating
heavily, but I wish/hope brackets somehow close before their final
GotY-poll to keep it a bit more chaotic. Then again, that's a free advantage for people paying attention to the polls, but still..... --- FastFalcon05 absolutely decimated me in the Guru challenge. How bad was it? ...I don't want to talk about it. |

Besides, GOTY polls can lie- just look at FFX vs. SSBM. That's not necessarily lying. That's just things changing over time. FFX would have destroyed SSBM back in 2001. That's not necessarily lying. That's just things changing over time.

Speaking of a game that wasn't out yet, who else thinks SMB massively
overperformed on Final Fantasy? FF got Ashe as its picture, and FFXII
wasn't even out yet.....it got proper Cloud pics the next day against

I don't. Why is it so hard to believe that SMB is a close third in terms of strongest series here? Those games are classic. That said, I believe Zelda/FF/Mario this year will be something like this: FF7 OoT LttP SMB3 FF6 FFX SMW SM64 FF8 SMB Twilight Princess Majora's Mask Zelda 1 Wind Waker Final Fantasy 1 Off the top of my head that looks pretty right --- Like Darth Maul, the bastard child of Michael Flatley and Hellboy. -trancer1 FastFalcon is apparantly better at contesty stuff than me. |

Guitar Hero will be in its own tier at the bottom of the list while WoW
I'd have it above FF and maybe WW if it's a later round and a bandwagon

I'm not sure what to think of Galaxy. It could be anywhere from completely off that list to just below SM64. 64 is probably its absolute upper limit. As for WoW, just after FFX indirectly, but it would lose to SMB, SMW and SM64 by virtue of them being freaking Mario. | It's hard to believe because of how well SSB held
up to SMB. The entire Mario series got on SSB about what FFVII alone
got on SSBM (and I seriously doubt SSB64 adds that much strength to

That depends what we mean by rout! I'm thinking an Ulti-style blowout,
or maybe a tad worse.....why would the difference between Cloud and
Ashe be less than that between normal Samus and ZSS, or normal Snake

Saying SMB/FF is hard to believe because of a match between SMB/SSB is silly. But it's even worse to try to imply that the picture
had any sort of notable cause in the Final Fantasy series

She'd probably have done just as well as Zelda, give or take a little, which certainly doesn't qualify as a rout. No, it would break 40% pretty easily, probably, but you still face the
problem of the other FF games adding very little to FFVII. Is it
because fans of each FF game dislike the other games? I don't know, but
it seems really strange for the whole FF series to only be a little
stronger than FFVII, and even stranger for SMB to really be worth 46%
on Zelda. If that were the case SMB3 would have blasted Zelda 1 into

I don't know, but it seems really strange for the whole FF series to

blasted Zelda 1 into the water. Not true. After the Series Contest, I realized that contest strength isn't FFVII + FFVIII + FFIX + FFX = BOOM It doesn't work that way. We all seemed to think it did, and if it DID work that way, then FF should've won because it should have the highest average strength. Super Mario Bros. as a series can do so well because it is so highly respected by nearly EVERYONE.
