| Now, obviously GameSpy is hugely PC FPS-biased
(not surprising- the site started as a way for gamers to play Quake
together in the mid 90s and has never really grown out of that mold),
so I think the more interesting thing to look at is, how did non-PC
games fare? I removed all the computer games from the lineup and
re-calced the stats, which creates a listing that looks alot more
normal to us GameFAQs users. Aww jeez, tranny just blasted me for not discussing Title Fight in
enough detail. This guy is relentless! I put up a new wiki article to
try to appease him: http://board8.wikia.com/wiki/GameSpy_Title_Fight_2004 This page includes some interesting commentary, which I will now read aloud to you. Results and Interesting Matches * Super Mario Bros. 3 was the surprise of the bracket, making it all the way to the Final despite GameSpy being heavily biased towards PC shooters. The biggest highlight was Mario's 2 vote victory against overall #1 seeded Doom in a tournament semi-final match that drew over 17,000 voters. Half-Life then knocked Mario 3 out with 58% of the vote to win the '04 title. * Diablo II was the most controversial game of the tourney; it scored a Round Three victory over StarCraft in an incredibly high-scoring match. Afterwards GameSpy discovered that both games had been cheating to inflate their totals and that the DII cheaters had just been a bit more persistent than those for SC. After new security was put in place to make cheating more difficult, DII was soundly thumped out of the tourney by Half-Life to the tune of 61%. * Mario Kart 64 was the Cinderella of Title Fight, reaching the Elite Eight despite having only earned a 5 seed in its division (to be fair though it had a very easy road... the only decent games it had to knock off were Soul Calibur II and Metal Gear Solid). * The highlight of R1 was an RPG duel between Final Fantasy VII and Chrono Trigger where CT used a Frog-like "clutch" last hour to pull out a victory of less than 100 votes. * The worst blowout of the tournament was suffered by Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow which drew the worst possible opponent in Ocarina of Time and took an 88% SFF beating as a result. Now some quick Comments on the non-PC x-stats - weird to see Halo so high, but keep in mind that by 2004 the game WAS a PC FPS and so technically I should have excluded it, even though the majority of its popularity was still coming from the Xbox of course - based on its R1 result, Goldeneye comes up just a touch short of MGS. however, due to a bracket quirk GE was able to win an "extra life" and re-enter the tournament - unfortunately it lost to Halo for a second time, but it improved by a few percent over its R1 loss, which would move it to just a touch ahead of MGS in the x-stats. the eternal rivalry continues! - yes FF7 was knocked out in the first round (as so often seems to happen in non-GameFAQs, non-site wide tournaments), but CT went on to have some surprisingly legit strength, so it really wasn't such a bad result - watch out for MK64; even on a site that cares nothing for racing/sports titles it was recognized as a standout N64 multi experience, finishing pretty close to both GE and OoT in the final standings --- thengamer.com/guru/ says we just got owned hard by FastFalcon! The Gamespy stats project CT to get 45.62% on OOT. The 2004 Gamefaqs
stats project CT to get 45.25% on OOT. A difference of less than half a
