Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 645

FFVIII has hit 6 noms, which isn't quite as pathetic as it was doing before.

I find it funny that I'm one of the 6, and I've never even played FFVIII.

DKC2 will probably be fine so long as it doesn't run into any big Nintendo game. I'd love to see it go up against Mega Man or something in round 2. I think it'll do better than most would expect - especially coming off of Diddy Kong's showing this year. DKC2 gets lots of love all around.

Doesn't matter what your opinion is, it's pretty much indisputable fact FF8 > FF9 in contest strength. No need to see 9 in it without 8.

"Tuesday" And "Patch Day" are different

Tuesdays are when its down for a couple hours, and not really an issue

Patch day, it might be down till 8 or 10 PM, and people are just on forums all day complaining, which makes it ripe for rallying.

Patch days only happen once every 2 or 3 months though

Also, thats about 30% of Gamefaqs playing it or playing it at one point. Just because you don't play it anymore, doesn't mean you won't vote for it. Like I haven't played FF7 in about 2 years, but I'd vote for it.

Let's compare it with other playership rates from the top 10 contest.

1. Final Fantasy VII - 75.04%
2. LoZ: Ocarina of Time - 87.61%
3. Chrono Trigger - 68.36%
4. LoZ: A Link to the Past - 84.50%
5. Super Mario Bros. 3 - 94.30%
6. Super Smash Bros. Melee - 71.89%
7. GoldenEye 007 - 61.54%
8. Metal Gear Solid - 72.39%
9. Halo - 47.95%
10. FFVI - 66.73%

It may be unfair to compare WoW with some of the strongest games... Still it's going to need a rally hitting the thousands to keep up with the big names.

With "Tie in rates" of 35% being considered "Amazing and some of the best tie in rates eveR", I seriously doubt these numbers. Like there is no way that 87% of the site has played Ocarina of Time, when its tie in rate with the n64 was about 25%

First, the question was have you played it not owned it since you've said people who have played the game would still vote for it. Also GameFAQs is disportional to the average gaming joe and we are more likely to buy popular games and own multiple systems.

First, the question was have you played it not owned it since you've said people who have played the game would still vote for it.

People who don't play WoW anymore still "Own it". Unless you throw out the game, since you can't sell WoW since it can only be installed once with the code like most PC games.

I seriously doubt WoW is anywhere close to Starcraft in strength before rallying, although it may have even more rally power. And after the past 2 years, I'd give a lot of credit for SC's run to the bandwagon factor. SC still had to keep WW's lead to 2000 or so prior to its insane final 6 hours- it would have broken 48% without rallying. I seriously doubt Halo would get that close to WW, or that WW is anywhere near as close to SSBM as the Starcraft matches imply- even discounting the final 6 hours.

WoW has potential for massive rallying, but to replicate Starcraft's run, it needs a bandwagon too- something much harder to get. As far as sales go, WoW wins but it's close, 10 million to 9 million, I believe. Starcraft apparently has a lot of sales to people who do not frequently play online. The key difference I think is that most of Gamefaqs likes Starcraft, and hates WoW.

I'll step it up in the oracle so hard you'd think I was playing DDR.

Speaking of DDR (sort of but not really, mostly just speaking of rhythm games), I'd expect Guitar Hero III to be the strongest... but how strong would it be (and would it even be stronger than Rock Band 2)? Would anyone take GH3 over, say, Fire Emblem?

The playership polls are probably biased in that those who have played it and care about it are more likely to respond. They should let us compare different games' playership on Gamefaqs fairly accurately though.

I saw an article a couple weeks ago about it, and that there were about 7 million currently non active subscriptions (since they don't kill the memberships if people quit), so it would make sense if its 18 million since its 11 million active subscriptions

I was just checking some of the 2008 character contest matches, and saw this oracle on the match:

"Master Chief - 60.75%
Kirby - 18.75%
Big Boss - 14.90%
Raiden - 5.83% "

I think you have a mix up there <_<

So long as both polls would show up on the main page without scrolling down I wouldn't be totally opposed, but I still don't like the idea. It'd be pretty nuts keeping up with the contest like that... though it would probably do a hell of a lot to eliminate boring match days. Eh, I don't know, it could work.

Even making a list of games that should return from last contest...

Super Mario Bros. 3
The Legend of Zelda
Tetris
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG
Street Fighter II
Super Mario World
LoZ: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy Tactics
Metal Gear Solid
Castlevania: SotN
GoldenEye 007
Super Mario 64
LoZ: Ocarina of Time
Halo: Combat Evolved
Starcraft
LoZ: The Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Final Fantasy X
Super Smash Bros. Melee

That's 23 games that I'd be surprised if they missed the contests and I've already made snubs such as; Final Fantasy, Sonic 2, Earthbound, Doom, Xenogears, Perfect Dark, Kingdom Hearts, Half-Life, GTA: Vice City and Metal Gear Solid 2. Most of them would be replaced by sequels that were released after the contest though. That's not even getting to some of the snubs from the first contest plus all the new games that have been released since the contest.
