It's amazing at the sheer amount of SFF/LFF in this bracket. Only 20

So I tried making some real raw stats for this without adjusting
anything, and it isn't much better. I only did Rounds 3-6 for now, but
basically I used the match that each character went out on and
extrapolated them through the winner of that match. It's a terrible
idea, but whatever. So we're over two hours into the latest "Got ___?" series of polls and we're not talking about it yet? The PS3's not improved a whole lot since the last time. It looks like it's jumped from ~32% in August to currently 35..37%...which is good for the PS3, but not if MGS4 wants a shot at GotY this year. Also, 35.46% still doesn't want one despite the big price drops, the increase in big-name titles this year, and Christmas being about a month away...which is about the same as June's 35.45% pre-MGS4. Take it as you will. --- FastFalcon05 absolutely decimated me in the Guru challenge. How bad was it? ...I don't want to talk about it. |

Cover your eyes, CS&Ders! Ngamer is rolling in with mass stats. Average 2008 Guru Score: 501 pts Average 2008 Sitewide Score: 297 pts * Gurus win by 204 pts! --- 2008 Guru Prediction Accuracy - 78.62% 2008 Sitewide Prediction Accuracy - 60.11% * Gurus win by 18.50%! Compare that to 2007 Guru Prediction Accuracy - 76.71% 2007 Sitewide Prediction Accuracy - 59.64% * Gurus win by 17.07% For prediction accuracy I judge it by how many picks had a character advancing to the next round correctly. So for instance let's say a result was Link over Kirby over two others. If 55% of us picked Link for first and 45% of us had him for second, and 0% of us picked Kirby to place, then we had 100% for Link and 0% for Kirby. Soooo, a 50% average. I like this system because we're able to discount how so many casual brackets don't realize that placement matters. Also, it lets us make a more true comparison between preds for these brackets and the 1v1s of the past. Speaking of which! Overall this was the second most difficult bracket in site history. The five hardest Contests site-wide have been 1. Characters '07 - 59.64% 2. Characters '08 - 60.11% 3. Characters '06 - 62.34% 4. Characters '02 - 63.50% 5. Characters '05 - 63.54% While the five hardest for the Gurus have been 1. Characters '07 - 76.71% 2. Characters '08 - 78.62% 3. Characters '06 - 82.84% 4. Characters '05 - 83.05% 5. But the thing that's most fun to look at IMO is the Most Embarrassing Results,
aka the times that the casual bracketmakers straight up outpredict us
Guru experts! Last season we were outguessed by the casuals a shocking
24 times- this time around we were a little older and wiser, managing
to only be outdone 20 times. Still kind of sad! Since there are a total
of 126 "results" per season, that means our overall records have been Gurus vs Casuals 2007 * Gurus win, 102-24 [.810] Gurus vs Casuals 2008 * Gurus win, 106-20 [.841] HOWEVER, that's not the full story! Even though we were beaten more often last year, the majority of those were pretty close matches- during L-Block's run, for instance, we were made to look like fools 5 times, but honestly the casuals weren't a whole lot smarter. Less then 1% of them had him finishing in the top two overall, and heck, less than 5% even had him make it out of Round Two! Despite losing 24 times in '07 we only suffered 7 "bad" loses, aka of over 25%. This year we fell on our face much more often, suffering 10 of those humiliating defeats! They were: * Pac-Man (R1) - 40.25% vs Mewtwo/Ness/Travis in 2008 * Duke Nukem (R1) - 36.23% vs Marth/Niko/Kefka in 2008 * Jill Valentine (R1) - 34.18% vs Kratos/Ocelot/Heavy in 2008 * Captain Falcon (R1) - 33.46% vs Alucard/Diddy/Kratos A in 2008 * Gordon Freeman (R2) - 28.93% vs Vincent/Scorpion/Falco in 2008 * Zidane (R1) - 28.87% vs Link/Shadow/Luke in 2008 * L-Block (R2) - 28.84% vs Crono/Ryu/Amaterasu in 2008 * Sora (R2) - 27.19% vs Squall/Yoshi/Fox in 2008 * Altair (R2) - 26.38% vs Duke/Marth/Lucario in 2008 * Weighted Companion Cube (R1) - 26.30% vs Tidus/DK/Tails in 2008 Pac-Man was brutal- why in the world did we have so much faith in Ness, even with Mewtwo there? The Duke win was awful as well- it seems we've never going to learn not to expect good things from Kefka and/or GTA. I can't really fault us for the Jill mistake- between last year's result and MGS4, the Ocelot loss made ZERO sense. Falcon, eh, I can't blame us for that too much... how could we have known Diddy would fall below WARIO on the Nintendo totem pole? And even if that was the case, Kratos A ought to have been able to hold off Nintendo LFF better than he did. I still say Gordon's rise was way out of left field, but I DO call us foolish for not giving Zidane any kind of chance against Shadow. L-Block, eh... we had anti-joke hope blinders on heading into the year, I'm just happy that he and the Cube didn't burn us more often. The Sora result I have to let slide- there's no way he should have survived that match between Squall SFF and having a serious threat like Yoshi there to eat him up. Altair was a mistake on our part; even before the Lucario flop we should have given him more credit due to what was sure to be Marth/Luc Smash LFF. And bah to the Cube! Alright! As I just said, everything's updated in terms of overall
prediction percentage for every Contest, but there's another way to
judge how hard a bracket was to predict- total score. This is something
I've been meaning to look into for a while, so I went ahead and took
care of it. I found the average score for every Contest, first for the
sitewide and then just for the Gurus. Now as I mentioned above the
average scores for this year were 2008 Overall: 297 2008 Gurus: 501 As it turns out, both of these are pretty solid improvements over last year 2007 Overall: 275 2008 Gurus: 452 Although we're adapting to the 4-way format at a much faster rate than the casuals are, it would seem. That big point difference makes it seems like '08 was much easier to call, but I don't really think so... as you saw the differences in match by match pred percentage were barely improved, so honestly I think you can chalk up nearly that entire 50 point gain to L-Block not ruining our brackets this time around. If some other unexpected joke had gained momentum and blindsided us the same way, like say the Cube, I bet we'd only have been a few points up on last season. Here are the five overall toughest brackets we've seen, when considering sitewide total scores 1. Characters '07 - 35.81% (275 pts, max 768) 2. Characters '08 - 38.67% (297 pts, max 768) 3. Characters '03 - 43.75% (84 pts, max 192) 4. Characters '06 - 43.75% (105 pts, max 240) 5. Characters '02 - 44.79% (86 pts, max 192) And the five that the Gurus had the hardest time with: Lowest Average Point Totals- Gurus 1. Characters '07 - 58.85% (452 pts, max 768) 2. Characters '08 - 65.23% (501 pts, max 768) 3. Characters '05 - 68.98% (149 pts, max 216) 4. Characters '06 - 70.00% (168 pts, max 240) 5. Cool stuff, but I'd say '08 was way more difficult to predict. Granted
I went from winning to an absolutely awful bracket, but I think even
objectively '08 was more difficult than '07. Like you said, take out
the L-Block fiasco, and you have roughly the same amount of upsets, but
way more that just flat out didn't make any sense this year. As wacky
as last year was, you can go back and explain away pretty much all the
matches... I don't think you can explain some of the insanity that went
down this contest. --- all hail ec your lord and savior except FastFalcon, he's so legit you must bow down to his ass too. |

I agree as well. I think we'll look back and see 07 as the Year of the
L Block, and look back at 08 and see some real noodle scratchers. Not
to mention no division last year matches the craziness of Division 1,

Nice stats N! So it looks like the Wii has gained more since August than the PS3 at this rate. The PS3 has gone from 31.38% to 33.9% while the Wii has gone from 57.44% to currently 61.05% (which I think will rise through the day)...although I don't think Nintendo's had anything worth noting since then except Wii Music. sixty instruments boost confirmed --- FastFalcon05 absolutely decimated me in the Guru challenge. How bad was it? ...I don't want to talk about it. |

Only 61%? I'm not sure, but isn't that behind the pace of the Gamecube
at this point in its life? What's really concerning for the Wii is that
it looks like it isn't going to go up much further in the future as 32%

I would have that concern too, but less people said that about the Wii
than the PS3 and 360 and the Wii already has dominating ownership,
so...yeah, it won't go up much from here, but I doubt the others do
either despite having lower ownership. Heck, less people say that about
the Wii when the other two systems are getting FF13 in the future;
that's the most anticipated game here since SSBB was released, and we
haven't even seen how its anticipation is faring since its big surprise
at E3. Nintendo doesn't even have any other big-name games announced
right now to my knowledge and it's still keeping that number low in
comparison. I'm not too worried for the Wii there. Give it another LoZ game and a trailer...that percentage will drop a little more from users already here and more Wii-owners will come across the site. Also, the Wii is due for a price-drop at some point soon -- it's already blowing out the record for the console going the longest without its first price-drop. That will make it a bit more appealing, too. All that said, I don't know how it compares to the Gamecube at this point. --- FastFalcon05 absolutely decimated me in the Guru challenge. How bad was it? ...I don't want to talk about it. |
