I keep saying that Sephiroth is only popular because Cloud's popular. I've always believed that.

The best part is, Link is going to be breaking 40%, making Snake, Cloud and Crono look like crap.

Which sucks balls.
I thought Crono should be bringing Link down tomorrow? But he'll be pulling Cloud down more than effecting Link, I guess.
*sigh*

I'm voting Snake anyways.

And? It's still going to make Mario look horrible this year, all due to *****y bracket placement.

I try to avoid reading Biolizard posts, but I'm curious as to what you would think is good or "fair" bracket placement for Mario. Do you propose we stick him as the sole Nintendo guy in a division full of Square? Then work it so that Link gets beat early by Cloud by crippling him completely and have Cloud/Seph split in the finals?

I'm not asking for a free pass to the finals, but the guy was SFFd in literally EVERY MATCH this year, and he was stuck with Link in the quarters. How much more screwed could he be?

BT, you gotta understand that Mario did get a terrible draw. He never got a single chance to be unhindered. There's no need to reverse the scenario and only let him take advantage of SFF/LFF, but he shouldn't have had to be so heavily sandbagged each match.

Well, only Magus was sandbagged this contest, but you get my point!

Alright one hour to go and a ~400 vote lead with assistance if Snake falls too far behind.

I'm calling this one, Snake has won

No, not only Snake, but we won. GameFAQs won today.

Not only is Kirby crushing Sephiroth, but Cloud is also being toppled as well, by who? Only one of the greatest characters in gaming, Solid Snake.

I'll admit GameFAQs, you had me worried in the early rounds. You made some bad decisions before, but today...you chose right.

GameFAQs wanted change from the predictable Cloud win, and Solid Snake brought us that change.

It doesn't matter what the future holds for us, I'm going to embrace this day. The day...that we, GameFAQs, chose right.

The Queen may be dead, but the King lives on (through this arm).

All this talk about how bad the 4-way format is is making me sad. So why don't we talk about our favorite matches to take place in this format instead?

For me, hard to beat Link/Vincent/Crono/Zero last year. 4 awesome characters and the first time a NNer bites the dust to a non-NNer. Not to mention the fact that the match was rather close.

Alucard/Liquid/Ness/Zidane was my favorite match. Fun 3-way at the start, and then voting for Liquid in the final 5 minutes to help him win by 3 was awesome.

It certainly mixes things up. It isn't fair to the characters by a landslide, but it does keep things fun (which we may need after doing this for a few years).

I'll give you Tifa, but Squall wasn't held down horribly by Sora, and he still managed to look half decent.

Mario, out of the gate, had an anchor in Zelda, who was replaced by MMX, who had help from Luigi, all the way until Mario met Link.

You know the rest.

He still made the semifinals though, and you can't really expect much more than that out of him. Squall was destined to lose in the third round to Cloud when he's quite easily a top 16 character, and Tifa was even worse off.

Don't think anybody could argue with Mario getting bad placement - the entire path was SFF. He's not the only one who has gotten screwed by placement this year, but he's the first that comes to mind. Probably would have looked a bit worse anyway, but yeah.

Match LXIII: Link vs. Crono vs. Solid Snake vs. Cloud Strife

Last Round:

Link – 38.45%
Crono – 25.28%
Mario – 19.56%
Samus Aran – 16.71%

Even with triple LFF Link was still able to walk over Crono, the same can’t be said about Mario and Samus though. Samus was able to perform much better against Mario ever since their 2005 encounter shortening the gap from 60/40 to 55/45. Crono makes it to his first final since 2005 by defeating the character that won the 2005 contest.

Solid Snake – 30.70%
Cloud Strife – 30.40%
Kirby – 22.75%
Sephiroth – 16.15%

Unless Cloud does anything it looks like Snake got the upset. What’s more amazing is that Kirby had no problems destroying Sephiroth even if there was SFF you have to give the pink puff ball a hand here. It’s kind of funny that the results here are opposite to what they were in round 4 just because of fanbase overlap.

Analysis:

At the time of writing this Snake and Cloud were battling it out, though since both of them are advancing and the results there won’t change my opinion for this match I’ve decided to start this analysis, though I will finish it when the results become more final. Welcome to the final match of Character Battle VII. For the past 62 days the board has laughed, cried and argued over the results, but now only four characters remain, three of which were in the finals in the previous year. Only one will take the crown and even if the winner is kind of predictable this should still be a good match.

The Crono/Vincent affair in round 4 was more than just another rematch; it was basically a free pass to the finals due to three Nintendo characters being present in the first semi-final. Crono has looked much more impressive compare to last contest though considering his competition that won’t be enough to avoid last in this final match. We have Link and Cloud, two of the strongest characters of the bracket and Solid Snake who while doesn’t have an agreed position is still agreed that he is stronger than Crono. There isn’t fanbase overlap to save Crono here, but being a strong character himself he won’t exactly be demolished by the three characters.

With no Sephiroth in the poll Snake won’t be as close to Cloud as he is currently and will probably return to his round 4 performance. Still 43% against Cloud puts him in my opinion as being the fourth strongest character in the bracket, unless Crono performs better than I expected putting Samus and in turn Mario up there. Still with the recent release of Metal Gear Solid 4 I would have to give Snake the nod as fourth strongest of the bracket, at least for this year. It should be an interesting fight between the three characters, just as long as they aren’t in the same poll.
charmander6000 | Posted 11/18/2008 8:20:59 PM | message detail
With no other Nintendo character in the poll I don’t see a reason for Cloud to defeat Link though I’m expecting him to perform much better than last year’s final because there are no anti-L-Block votes going towards Link. Still for a character whose game put GameFAQs on the map Cloud still puts up a good show with Link, until the sun rises. By next contest Dissidia should hopefully be released in North America and while it is only on the PSP a smaller Kingdom Heart like boost is highly probable which could give Cloud the support needed to beat Link.

With no jokes or Nintendo characters in sight the finals is more or less a formality for Link. Unless Snake decides to steal all of Link’s Brawl support, which is unlikely seeing how well he did last round I don’t see a way for him to lose. Some of the elite characters on GameFAQs need to get some hot releases while Link sits there doing nothing before I see him losing.

While many people don’t want to admit this the contest did have its moments and upsets and while I wouldn’t rank it as the best contest ever it wasn’t that bad. I think a lot of people give this contest a lot of negative points because of the format and while I’d like to have the old format return I’m not going to leave the board if this format returns. Well I guess this is my final analysis for this contest and time for some stats. Using Times New Roman and 12 point font in Microsoft Word all of my analyses take up 103 pages and have over 45,000 words. See you next contest.

Mario was given a fine draw last year.

One thing I don't like about 4-ways though, is how some characters will inevitably go out under unfair circumstances. Mario will always keep going and then get eliminated when he hits Link. Sephiroth will always keep going and then get eliminated when he hits Cloud. It's happened for both of them in both contests, and would just about every year regardless of bracket placement. LFF is the only way they would be eliminated barring an L-Block type run.

While this bracket has a lot of problems, it's really hard to break up the Noble Nine (and the near-elites) in a decent manner. Cloud and Link should probably be on opposite sides of the bracket, and then you've already got a problem on where Sephiroth should go. If he's on Cloud's side, he gets mauled by the likes of Kirby. If he's on Link's side, then you probably lose a good semifinal match (sorry Snake, but I'm not buying you > Seph yet). You can't stick Mario/Samus with Link or you get what happened this year and last year, and you'd really like to avoid putting them together. Likewise for the Square near-elites and probably Crono too, and if you put Seph with Link then your options for them are really constrained.

It's much easier to make "fair" 1v1 brackets, since fourways depend on who you're with so much of the time.

Yeah, that's the point I was trying to make. People are always going to get screwed, and despite how badly he looked, Mario still made it to Link, which is about as far as he's going to go. Tifa, Squall and Mega Man/Zero all had way worse placement. Dante got stuck with Leon again, Big Boss and Raiden screwed eachother out of looking good. Geno is the epitome of bad bracket placement. Squall twice and Bowser this year. The list goes on. To whine about how it's "unfair" that Mario got 52% on X instead of 55% is completely lame.
