I like Cloud more than Snake (barely, and only because a recent
playthrough of MGS made me realize how dumb Snake is before the events
of 2), but this is a great result. Cloud waited way too long to make a

don't see the anti-Cloud rally doing anything. I mean, seriously,
what would you tell someone, "Go to Gamefaqs and vote against Cloud?"
That would have a higher chance of getting them to vote FOR Cloud. And
if you tell them to vote for Snake because he's in a close match with
Cloud, they'll vote for the one they prefer.....and they won't be
voting for Sephiroth, since they know that there's a close match
between Cloud and Snake. So....yeah Snake has the rally advantage, but
Cloud still has like a 10% chance of winning this match. I think you miss the point - people rally because of that, but all they're doing is posting a link and saying "vote Snake" or whatever. the characters that have had crazy rallied finishes are first-hour characters: Crono and Frog. if a Nintendo character was close they'd get the same kind of treatment -- hell, even Peach got it a little bit against Jill. go look at Snake and Cloud's first hour. without it, Cloud is ahead right now. --- xyzzy http://isobamapresident.com/ |

I think you miss the point - people rally because of that, but all
they're doing is posting a link and saying "vote Snake" or whatever. And that's exactly why it's harder to rally against Cloud than against Vincent or Axel- because the person is more likely to get to Gamefaqs and vote for Cloud instead of Snake. It's like the Kerrigan rallies backfiring and resulting in more Vincent votes, except that Snake will still get a big majority of the rallied votes. --- Crono's quest to beat Link: Character Battle VII Final: Link vs. Cloud vs. Crono vs. Snake |

Link vs. Zack Fair vs. Mario vs. Mega Man X Link: Commanding performance after commanding performance. What else is there to say about this guy? He's just a damn monster. Grade: A Zack Fair: Some people gave this guy a chance to advance due to standing out the most by far, but he was still the heavy underdog going in. Not so, says the FF7 horde! While the end result wasn't close, Zack still managed to make people nervous early on, and even managed to take the lead from the plumber during the night. Not bad from a guy who's probably just a high midcarder. Grade: B+ Mario: Managed not to get SFFd by Link, but after seeing their match last year, that wasn't very surprising. Let Zack scare him, but triple LFF has been shown to be a major factor in matches (hello Mewtwo). And he still advanced...so not a spectacular performance, but not one you can fault him for either. Grade: C+ Mega Man X: Had a slim chance to advance, but considering LoZ SFFd the Mega Man X series in the series contest, he actually had a good chance of being hurt more by Link than Mario. And...he was. Still, not a bad performance. X has proved himself to be a strong contender worthy of returning. Grade: C --- Bracket: http://thengamer.com/guru/bracket.php?id=10 |

Cloud is probably the easiest person to
rally against. When new people post on this board, you know what they
always say? "Why does Cloud always win?" The perception that Cloud is
the master of these contests is very strong. Cloud's strongest fanbase is GameFAQs. If Cloud is going even with Snake among GameFAQs voters, rallying anywhere else is going to result in a gain for Snake - that is, if the rallying is done properly. --- Be a good little washing machine, now... o_0 The Ohio State University: We are so much better than m*ch!g@n. |

Samus Aran vs. Vincent vs. Crono vs. Pikachu Samus: Despite obvious Pikachu LFF, she still managed to beat the competition with ease. Samus seems to be all-around better with SFF this year. Grade: B+ Vincent: Not a bad performance, really. Sometimes we forget that beating a NNer, even a weaker one, is really hard. Nevertheless...what was with that day vote? Crono handed Vincent the match on a silver platter, and then he let himself get in range for the 12th hour 'rally' (which I won't count against him, as it was obvious BS). But still...Vincent choked the match away, it's that simple. Grade: C- Crono: Hoo boy. He had a decent day vote, managed to channel Frog stuffers, and won a match he was expected to lose from the beginning. Shenanigans aside, Crono certainly restored some our faith in him this year. I don't think anyone will be taking MM, Sonic, Squall ect. over him for a while. Grade: B+ Pikachu: Considering Samus was here, he did very well. People were calling for more craziness after L-Block, but even mascots of one of the most popular franchises in the world have limits. Pikachu definitely isn't anywhere near this strong in 1 on 1 matches, but this year will never be taken from him; Grade: B (kind of hard to give any of these guys low grades...for now) --- Bracket: http://thengamer.com/guru/bracket.php?id=10 |

Solid Snake vs. WCC vs. WCC vs. Mewtwo Solid Snake: He set himself up to possibly take down Cloud in the next round (although that's quite the long-shot...wait), did much better against Cloud than in the Battle Royale two years ago, and just did great all around. About time this site appreciated MGS more. Grade: B+ WCC: Managed to stay somewhat static, and...Uuuuuh screw professionalism, this thing beat MM die die die Grade: F-- Cloud: It's so hard to give writeups to Clinkeroth in matches like this. What else is there to say except domination? Even when showing a bit of weakness against Snake, Cloud dominated. Grade: A Mewtwo: Kind of a disappointing result after what he did in R3. No one was expecting him to come close to that, but a good showing regardless would've been nice. Still...he got 25% against Cloud, which puts him at midcarder status. Stick around, Mewtwo. Kirby vs. Dante vs. Sephiroth vs. Sonic Kirby: WHAT. Just. WHAT. No one except Lopen fanboyism could've possibly predicted this. This is more surprising than Pikachu over L-Block, i think. Kirby in the semis...who would've expected that? Grade: A+ Dante: Disappointing result, but it's easy to explain with Badass SFF. Shame he didn't get an even playing field with Kirby this year, so we could've had that fated duel in earnest. Grade: C- Sephiroth: Domination. Grade: A Sonic: This is easily the most embarrassing result a NNer has ever had. Vincent is considered the 10th strongest by many, and WCC only got by through rallying and LFF. This? No excuses. Even ignoring Kirby, he performed like ass against Sephiroth and Dante directly. Just as MM established himself as the bottom barrel of the NN, Sonic pulls this. It's Kirby! Link vs. Mario vs. Samus vs. Crono Link: He beat Mario and Samus combined by 2%. With Triple LFF, he still gets 61% against Crono directly. Frankly, Link scares me. He seems to get stronger every year, and he was already considered a god that took the weight of the rest of the internet voting in unison to bring down. Grade: A+ Mario: Could've made it a little closer with Crono, but this was a foregone conclusion with 3 Nintendo characters and one Square character. Grade: C Samus: Remember when Samus got 40% against Mario? Remember when she couldn't even get 8% in that first Battle Royale match? I don't know what's happened to her, but she's definitely done a lot better with SFF and just in general this year. Grade: B Crono: Even though he obviously took advantage of LFF...not bad. And since this seems to be OVAH... Cloud vs. Snake vs. Sephiroth vs. Kirby Cloud: Heh, even when losing to someone other than Link for the first time since 2002 (Block doesn't count), Cloud doesn't look half-bad. Gonna have to dock him points for letting Kirby scare him, but still, not a terrible performance. Grade: C Snake: Some people will tell you that Snake beating Cloud isn't impressive, as all he's doing is taking advantage of LFF. http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/43 In two year he's gone from barely beating Sephiroth to barely beating Cloud. It never would've happened without LFF, but it's CLOUD. People forget how nigh-untouchable Clinkeroth is. Snake is a force, and has solidified himself as the 4th strongest character (in my eyes, anyway). This format sucks 95% of the time, but when that other 5% produces a result like this, I almost wouldn't mind it sticking around. Almost. Grade: A+ Sephiroth: Sephy just seems more like the Ganondorf to Cloud's Link every year. He's still #3 (probably...Snake's a-comin for ya next year!) on the totem poll, but collapsing whenever Cloud says hi isn't encouraging. He didn't even come close to Kirby. Grade: D+ Kirby: Much like Pikachu, people wanted more craziness after a stunning upset...and for a while, they almost had it! For one very silly hour, Kirby led Cloud. Now he trails Cloud by 10000+ votes, but those are mere details. Seriously though, Kirby seems to be the most static normal character there is, while also being a little stronger than last year. Kirby's been waiting to make noise in these things for a long time, and while he's had some good showings, nothing compares to these last two rounds. I want to point out that Sonic is the only character to have lost to two non-NN'ers in the same contest.
He was also one of several who lost to L-Block last year, and it's
debatable whether or not Squall would have beat him if Sora and Solid
weren't in the way AND he wasn't announced in SSBB in the middle of the
