I don't think Snake's boost is going to drop off as dramatically as
some of you have been implying. Besides we all know the 360 port is

I'd worry about the Nintendo crew before Snake. Most of us are already
presuming they're weaker than their 05-06 levels, and there isn't much
light at the end of the tunnel right now. Unless a new Zelda is
announced at E3 or something, I don't think Nintendo has anything for

No. Crono hasn't had a new game in 13 years, so he fits the idea that
characters lose strength gained from their new games the least well of

Ok, Master Chief works. But that was hype, not a real boost to his
permanent strength.....this is the third year Snake has been boosted,

Crono seems randomly a touch stronger this year... but I think he's a
special case, as CT is just one of those very few games this site seems
to think is timeless (that's why I thought the rallying for Crono the
other day was funny - the biggest CT fanbase on the web is located
HERE). Snake is a bit more contemporary however, it's harder for me to
see his games standing the test of time like that. Still, it's not like a year is going to drop him to Mega Man level or anything. He'll be a fine pick over Mario or Samus. --- turnturnturn your brain in turnturnturn your brain in |

Master Chief is probably the biggest example of a character dropping after their game got older. I think Chief's drop has much, much more to do with the fact that he isn't on television or cans of soda or underwear or alarm clocks this year. If Nintendo wanted to spend millions to do it, they could probably get Samus to win one of these. Also, I think Chief's game was received pretty poorly after the initial hype, and I'd also bet on something like that doing more to decrease the boost than gradual aging. Yeah, the point is that Snake no longer has anything to help him

Yeah. Master Chief is more of a unique situation - hype for Halo is so
deafening when one gets close to release that he can't help but get
stronger. But once you take that hype away, he'll always slip back down
to his normal levels. Other characters shouldn't suffer the same way,

master chief isnt really a good example. He wasnt strong pre halo 3. I
do wish that MGS4 hadnt been released yet during this contest though,

Yeah, looks like the doors have all but closed for Cloud. As good as
his SNV is, he can't just stall and take small losses right now. When
considering that Snake will go into that final hour with BOOSTEES if
anything becomes too close, Cloud has about six hours to smash this

Solid is arguably the most important character to this generation
thanks to MGS4 and SSBB. Don't count on him dropping for a long time,
especially as Wii remains the top system and the PS3-ownership grows
here. He had been living off hype for a long time, and now he's even
stronger with his games out. It's not immediately after the releases
like Halo 3 and it's not like they were received without almost
unanimous praise like Halo 3, so he doesn't have to worry there either.

FFVII's trends seem to have become more balanced this year. Vincent did
much better against Crono early on and much worse the rest of the day
