Some Common Stat Topic Lingo Defined*~ SFF (Same Fanbase Factor) - Same Fanbase Factor is the theory that, if two contestants share a common fanbase, the weaker of the two options will underperform in a direct matchup. For instance, Link was expected to defeat Ganon with 65% of the vote in 2004, based on their 2003 values. Instead, Link collected near 88% of the vote, because the Zelda fanbase so clearly sided with him. However, take some SFF labels with a grain of salt, as many people will slap it onto any match that doesn't make total sense. This has caused a few SFF jokes, with LordOfDabu's "Some Frivolous Factor" being the funniest of them. X-Stats - Short form of Extrapolated Statistics, aka the mathematical "strength" of a contestant that can be determined based on their performance in any given matchup. See above for a detailed explanation of the x-stat process. rSFF (Reverse Same Fanbase Factor): An unproven theory that states that an SFF match will feature the expected weaker character receiving more benefit from SFF than the stronger character. For example, all evidence supports Samus being indirectly stronger than Mario, yet Mario blew Samus away during their 2005 match. That's rSFF in action, and the one case we have of the weaker statistical character winning with it. For other information, surf the contest sites a bit. I doubt Vincent will undergo the curse of the NN breaker - after all,
he actually pulled it off (format aside). Same goes for Auron, if not

I do find it funny that Squall, who I currently consider to be the
strongest of the trio, is the one who hasn't pulled off an NN upset.
And it's largely thanks to the two characters who have been giving him

Well Albion, it may not be much but come tomorrows match, im gonna try
to get all the support in my country that i can muster. Sure Canada may
not have as much influence, but any aid helps. I just hope it will give Crono enough of a boost to destroy the L-Block and put an end to the joke characters. Also i hope that if Crono does beat L-block he gets more support as the release of CTDS looms ever closer even though the contest will end before then. So cmon Crono! Given that Snake's boost was almost entirely from his announcement
in Brawl, what Samus did doesn't entirely reflect her strength. The
Snake that faced Samus definitely wasn't the same Snake that had beaten
Mega Man and Sonic easy - it's a really good bet he lost a good chunk
of the Nintendo support he had gained from the announcement. If that's
the case, there's no way I don't see Mario wrecking Snake even worse
there. He'd be the more likely of the two to sap that newfound Brawl
support - and its one of the primary reasons many argued against taking
Snake over Mario pre-contest. It doesn't mean much for Mario to do better than Samus at an SFF match- we already knew that. You do have data from 2007, though it's not as conclusive as a 1-on-1's would be, but Samus definitely didn't look like the better of the two here. She is probably stronger this year by a bit, mostly because of Nintendo having a down year, but not by anything all that significant - Mario's draw against Nintendo characters this year has made him look worse than he really is, though he's clearly been stronger before. Looking at Mario's performance against Sephiroth and Samus's performance against Cloud, I'd say they were about equal last year, with maybe a slight edge to Samus since she had to deal with LFF with MM, while Mario SFF'd Fox into the ground. This year she has looked like she would be worth 54-56% or so on Mario indirectly, I think. I mean your inequality did have him equal to Crono (come on now). I always overrate Crono.....and am not planning to argue that part of the inequality, at least until tomorrow. Mario (2005c) VS Sonic (2005c) Mario has a strength of 43.20. Sonic has a strength of 38.50. Mario wins with 55.44% of the vote! A win of 11,743 with 107,937 total votes cast. Maybe I'm just crazy, but that's a full percentage better than Snake did, against a stronger Sonic/Mega/Crono, adding in some SFF in Samus/Snake, it BLATANTLY OBVIOUS that Samus is lower than Mario. Maybe not by much, but Mario is, and always has been, indirectly stronger. --- I want adventure in the great wide somewhere... That's less than half a percent better than what Snake put up, and
around 3% below what Samus is projected to put on Sonic in 2006, not to

There is the explanation that says that Samus SFF'd away Snake's
Brawl support, but while I initially embraced it (anything to make
Samus look bad and Crono look good!), it just seems like flimsy,
after-the-fact, justification. Yeah, I ain't buying that. She wouldn't have been able to win like she did if she hadn't taken away Snake's Brawl base. If you think Mario would have sapped away that Nintendo support, there's no real reason to think Samus couldn't (and didn't) do the same. Uh, I know it's hard to remember, but Samus and Crono were really quite
close in 2004. That match wouldn't have been a guarantee at all,
especially if you think Crono might've done some underperforming from

Hmm. Checking things again, maybe it wouldn't be a guarantee, but I'd
feel pretty comfortable with it at least. I agree that the Samus/Mario

| Samus is at 55.13% on Vincent right now.....I may
have to take back what I said about Vincent winning any hours tonight,
although it could very well still happen. We won't settle this Mario/Samus issue this year thanks to SFF. Next year, post-CTDS Crono will beat both of them, giving us a good read on them at last, before facing Sephiroth in the match he should have gotten 5 years ago. Samus used to be stronger raw-strength wise than Mario, but Mario's looked slightly stronger every year since the Nintendo boost. This year we don't really know yet because Mario's been LFFed so much - but no way have we seen *anything* to indicate that Samus could get 54% indirectly on Mario this year! That's a radical statement to make. BDawg BTW Sonic vs. Mario is really something that should've happened by now. Yeat it really sucks that we never got to see that early on in these contests. Think about it - we might eventually end up finally seeing that...but at a time when Mario could easily SFF Sonic heavily in one of the most famous rivalries in video game history?!?! The fact that people will be rooting on Pikachu to upend L-Block
tomorrow still kinda boggles my mind. Not only because of the terrible
