How are Magus and Auron related exactly? Haven't we always say that Old
Square and New Square have different fanbases? Once CTDS is release
there may be some overlap. Sandbag not being in the poll is probably a
bigger factor than Magus being in the poll. --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/CB7%20BOP.xls Character Battle 2008: Points 167/240 Today's Match: Sonic > Auron |
TestIcicles | Posted 11/3/2008 5:15:38 PM | message detail |
Which is why I don't think it'd make a difference. There's been enough
trouble establishing overlap between 2D and 3D FF, and you want me to
buy Magus/Auron overlap. Sandbag is probably hurting Sonic more than
the other characters in this poll, but I really don't think it's that
much. Who the hell votes for Sandbag? Joke voters, not smash fans.
Unless you can show me how joke voters are more likely to vote for
Sonic than Auron or Subby, I'll ignore it having any significant effect. --- mmm test icicles |

Sonic vs. Auron 1 on 1, who do you take? I see a lot of people excusing Sonic Team's performances via format, so I'm curious to see if they think it's enough to overcome this deficit. --- Bracket: http://thengamer.com/guru/bracket.php?id=10 |

I'm also of the persuasion that Auron is a little more powerful with
this format, so it'd be close. Sonic looks weaker this year anyway, so
I might take the upset. I'd definitely take Squall and Vincent over him
now. --- Squall Leonhart's Path to the CBVII Championship Round 2: 1st place, 38857 votes (30.47%) |

And why is everyone completely writing off Squall to advance with Cloud
there? It was something I was considering when I had
Cloud/Squall/Yoshi/Mewtwo, but I decided against it because I figurerd
Mewtwo would be rubbish (though not as rubbish as he actually wound up
being) --- I want adventure in the great wide somewhere... I want it more than I can tell! - Belle http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/3949/beautyandthebeast21024uh9.jpg |

Because it's basically taken for granted that Cloud is going to SFF
Squall harder than he will Sora. Squall basically needs to learn
somehow to LFF Sora down there with him, which would help Mewtwo.
Squall only likes to LFF Sora half the time, so who knows? Maybe he'll
do it this time! --- Squall Leonhart's Path to the CBVII Championship Round 2: 1st place, 38857 votes (30.47%) |
red sox 777 | Posted 11/3/2008 6:28:29 PM | message detail |
I'm not entirely convinced Squall ends up below Sora here. Sora is last
on the SFF chain in this match, which is never a good position to be
in. Squall also has some room to be SFF'd harder by Cloud before
falling below Sora, so while Sora should be the favorite, I wouldn't be
surprised if Squall placed. --- Crono's quest to kick L-Block out of this contest: Round 3: Crono vs. L-Block vs. Pikachu vs. Alucard |
LeonhartFour | Posted 11/3/2008 6:30:40 PM | message detail |
Yeah, that's basically what I'm hoping for, that Squall somehow drags Sora down there with him and pushes him down below him. And I know it was 2003, but Aeris/Sora still gives me a bit of hope, too. --- Squall Leonhart's Path to the CBVII Championship Round 2: 1st place, 38857 votes (30.47%) |

Squall only likes to LFF Sora half the time, so who knows? Maybe he'll
do it this time! This sentence is why having 2 term for the same thing is completely stupid and confusing. I think what you meant to say is that Cloud/Squall have more overlap than Sora/Cloud. At any rate, maybe Sora is the one that will walk out of there. After all, a VERY high number of Aeris' votes went to Squall between round 1 and round 2 last year. --- I want adventure in the great wide somewhere... This sentence is why having 2 term for the same thing is completely stupid and confusing. Do you have to say this exact same thing any time someone uses SFF and LFF in the same post? Yes, Cloud and Squall will have more overlap, but at the same time, Squall and Sora have overlap and Squall is naturally stronger, so I'm just hoping he can take advantage of that. --- Squall Leonhart's Path to the CBVII Championship Round 2: 1st place, 38857 votes (30.47%) |

Mario wasn't the obvious favorite for first though- that was Sephiroth.
Link did smash Zelda into oblivion, but considering
Link/Ganondorf.....that's a pretty exceptional case I think. It's not
like there was much reason to vote for Zelda anyways- there was no way
she was beating Vincent there. --- Crono's quest to kick L-Block out of this contest: Round 3: Crono vs. L-Block vs. Pikachu vs. Alucard |

Looking ahead to the next round, Cloud managed to swing the Auron/Ryu votes 10%. From a 57% Auron win to a 53% Ryu win. I wouldn't expect Sephiroth to have quite as large an effect, but Sonic would win handily with only half of that. Even with Tifa out of the picture, it doesn't look like Auron has much of a chance at all. |

MKvsDCU is starting to get an advertising push on television as well.
I've seen the commercials a good number of times already today. It's sad Subby always gets wasted against really elite competition too early on. I think he's a pretty strong characters, a lot moreso than most give him credit for. --- :> |

Scorpion had a really bad picture, to be honest. It would have been a
lot closer if he had a standard Scorpion picture instead of a low res
Ghost Rider crap. That being said, Sub-Zero is stronger than Scorpion. He just is. He's the most popular MK character, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. --- :> |

round 2, but he had a good pic in round 1 and still did worse than
Subby last year against Gordon. --- Squall Leonhart's Path to the CBVII Championship Round 2: 1st place, 38857 votes (30.47%) |

Match XLVIII: Sephiroth vs. Tifa Lockheart vs. Kratos vs. Jill Valentine Last Round: Sephiroth – 47.23% Tifa Lockheart – 28.49% Ratchet – 13.93% Nana – 10.35% Looks like Sephiroth couldn’t SFF Tifa in this match and for a while at the beginning it looked like Tifa was ready to reverse SFF. There was however LFF based on their performances against Ratchet so Tifa can still lose to weaker competition in this match. Next year we should get the Ice Climbers instead of just Nana to see how much better they perform. Kratos – 37.19% Jill Valentine – 25.70% Revolver Ocelot – 24.22% Heavy – 12.89% This result probably shocked me the most last round. You don’t go from beating the same character last year and getting one of the biggest games of this year to losing to that same character who received nothing. Still if you compare Ocelot to Kratos Ocelot still did better compared to last year which makes the Jill upset all the more crazy. I guess the Resident Evil boost is here and hopefully it will stay for a couple of years. Analysis: This is why I like this format; their individual strengths will tell you that each character is on a different tier of strength so this should be a boring match; however with two characters undergoing a fanbase overlap the match becomes much more interesting. I know people hate this format, but a lot of the matches we see wouldn’t be interesting if we had one vs. one instead. Even if he’s being held back by Tifa Sephiroth should easily take first in this match. Sephiroth is one of the strongest characters in the bracket and it would take a few more FFVII characters including Cloud before he’ll start to lose to anybody in this match. Still when you’re comparing Sephiroth with Tifa he underperformed though that was mostly because of his slow start, hopefully Sephiroth does better in this match. As impressive as Jill was last round she won’t be placing in this match. Not only is she not beating Kratos, but Sephiroth isn’t going to be losing to her either. Last round when Jill defeated Ocelot one of the reasons said was that Cloud affected Jill more than Ocelot last year (not to be confused with Ocelot has more hardcore fans than Jill) well this match which contains two FFVII characters so if there is a factor there we will surely see it. For Jill to avoid last the FFVII/RE overlap would have to be false and Sephiroth would have to decide that he wants to SFF Tifa this round and given Sephiroth’s contest record it is a possibility. Despite Tifa’s performance last round I would have to say Kratos is the favourite for second. While on a level playing field Kratos has nothing on Tifa he still wouldn’t do badly against her and with Sephiroth in the poll Kratos has a big advantage and will likely use it to steal second. Also for all we know Kratos could have gained some strength from his new PSP release which can only help. |
charmander6000 | Posted 11/3/2008 8:11:12 PM | message detail |
As well as Tifa did against Sephiroth she was
heavily SFF. She barely doubled Ratchet last round. To put that into
perspective Ganondorf, a character comparable to Tifa got 77% on him
last year. While Ratchet has received a couple of games since last
contest it isn’t enough to close that kind of gap. Also a theory that
was thrown around in the topic last round was due to the competition
voters could either vote for fodder or FFVII which would explain Tifa’s
performance and if it was true will thus cause Tifa to get last in this
match as Sephiroth SFF her. Funny that Kratos is the one fighting for second, but it will be Jill who will probably be giving Tifa a bigger fight. Tifa has been screwed in this format, first she wasn’t in the bracket then her first round opponent is probably the worst opponent she could have hoped for besides Cloud. Kratos on the other hand will be going to the third round for the second time because of fanbase overlap. Also why can I write over 35,000 words so far in my analysis yet it is so hard to write 500 words for university? charmander6000’s Bracket: Sephiroth > Kratos charmander6000’s Prediction: Sephiroth – 38.52%, Kratos – 24.52%, Tifa – 20.52%, Jill – 16.44% --- Board 8 BOP: http://www.freewebs.com/charmander6000/CB7%20BOP.xls Character Battle 2008: Points 167/240 Today's Match: Sonic > Auron |
