I'm really hoping that Dante and Leon make it through now... maybe they can LFF eachother enough next round for Kirby > Chief Certainly not impossible, but if Chief wins today, he'll be the definite favorite in the division finals. It's not like Dante and Leon make Kirby stand out more than Boss and Raiden do. Heck, it might not even be as good for Kirby as this draw is, seeing as how Leon's RE games span three Nintendo consoles. --- Yoblazer: http://i33.tinypic.com/16hnm05.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |

What Cloud gained by the end of the Power Hour, he took from Mewtwo. What he gained overnight, he mostly took from Mewtwo, who looked flatout awful until the ASV came around. For some reason, Pac-Man was the big winner of the early morning vote. Cloud struggled a bit (relatively) with the ASV, but it's Zelda and Pokemon, so...Cloud always finishes with a strong second night vote, from what little there is. Yesterday's stats: Cloud Strife – 50.00% Mewtwo – 24.02% Midna – 23.20% Pac-Man – 20.08% Division 6, Lower Half Cloud Strife – 50.00% Mewtwo – 24.02% Midna – 23.20% Pac-Man – 20.08% Miles Edgeworth – 17.03% Ness – 14.62% Travis Touchdown – 12.53% Axel Steel – 11.22% Whoo, go Edgey! Beating Ness and decently close to Pac-Man! Axel Steel gets punked by Travis Touchdown! Kirby ought to do fine next round, regardless of who's there. Even if
Riku somehow edges Leon still, Kirby's proven he can beat the Chief at
this point. If Dante and Leon are both there, I'd consider Kirby the
favorite for first. If not, Dante probably beats him. Man, the epic showdown we've been waiting for! --- Squall Leonhart's Path to the CBVII Championship Round 2: 1st place, 38857 votes (30.47%) |

Wait, I just realized something. Is a Nintendo character...impressing? SOUND THE ALERT Nintendo has been pretty unlucky with bracket placement. Most of their upper echelon people (Zelda, Ganon, the entire Mario series) have been burdened with enough SFF as to make it impossible to impress or even tell where the hell they are. And just about everyone else who didn't have to deal with SFF was just a Brawl scrub. I guess this is what happens when a roster of 35 makes the damned bracket. --- Yoblazer: http://i33.tinypic.com/16hnm05.jpg Watch and you'll see... someday I'll be... part of your world! |
Tarrot | Posted 10/31/2008 10:17:00 PM | message detail |
As I always understood it: SFF is when a character is beat worse than usual due to the same fanbase (Link vs. Anything Nintendo, Cloud vs. Anything FF). LFF is when a lower character overperforms on a higher character due to similar fanbases (Sora vs. Squall is probably the best example). |

We've never really properly defined SFF and LFF in
terms that are not dependent on the x-stats I think, so here are my
ideas for definitions for LFF and SFF. After thinking about it, I think
it's better to define SFF as a subset of LFF. LFF: Fanbase overlap. SFF: Fanbase overlap such that the shared fanbase prefers one character disproportionately compared to the total size of the characters' fanbases. In general, we've tried to define SFF as a situation in which the shared fanbase disproportionately favors one character over the other. The main problem is: disproportionate to what? There has rarely been any answer here other than the implied answer of the x-stats, or our opinions. consolefreak came up with a fairly good definition a while ago, but I can't remember exactly how it went. Either way, I think it's better to go all the way and define disproportionate as dispropotionate to the total size of the fanbases, and not to strength. Or in other words, to view SFF as a (critical!!!) component of strength. These definitions would apply to both 1v1s and 4-ways, so yes, there would be LFF of varying degrees in every 1v1 match. There would also be SFF in most 1v1 matches, even between characters who do not share that much fanbase. This does not mean SFF would be observable in many cases- because a character could SFF many characters to a similar degree. The best example here is Crono- his fanbase is obviously smaller than most characters in the top 20 at least, so how does he do so well? It's because he manages to win the shared fanbase to a disproportionate degree compared to the total size of the fanbases. I would consider this SFF, but it would not be observable because it would be more or less linear and transitive- just like the x-stats. SFF is mostly observable when the extent of the overlap changes, irrespective of how good a character is at wining the shared fanbase. --- Crono's quest to kick L-Block out of this contest: Round 3: Crono vs. L-Block vs. Pikachu vs. Alucard |
